The proble with most pubs, particularly in the Mid Beds area, which is where I live, is that they're not really interested in drinkers. They're almost all, with very few exceptions, dedicated to food

Once upon a time, food was a side line in pubs, yet now, it seems to be the be all and end all

I went in to a pub in Hinxworth last year, ( the name escapes me ) and ordered adrink, and went to sit down ( I was the only customer in the pub) The Land Lady snapped " Are you eating?" Whe I said no, she said " Then could you stand at the bar?" Actually, I put a question mark at the end, but it was more of an order. I replied " So sorry. Thought it was a pub"

And that seems to be the general attitude these days? If you're a drinker, you'll be tolerated, but only just

The Chequers Inn, Stotfold

Recently bought by a consortium of about half a dozen people from the village. For the first two weeks they were all in there working and the service was great. By about the third week waiting time to get served averaged about 5-6 minutes. Not because of the queue but because there was nobody to serve you. I used to go there 1-4 times a week, now I hardly bother.

The Plough at Langford, Langford

Run by a mother and daughter team these days and as someone said earlier it's so "cliquey" You're made to feel totally un-welcome when you walk in. I went in there a few Sundays ago and the mother was at the other end of the bar chatting with about 5-6 of her chosen few. She dragged herself down to serve me without a word, just looked at me, gave me my drink, took my money gave me change and cruised off to the other bar again. When I wanted another I got a look that seemed to say " Oh God, are you still here."

I don't see how they can be making it pay as it's often empty even at week ends. The only time it's crowded is if they've got an event there. A village pub should be buzzing, at least at week ends.

The Fox and Duck, Stotfold

Since Ted Saunders bought this pub, it's gone from strength to strength, and his best move by far was installing his son Mark as Manager. He's really turned the place around, and it's now exactly how a local country pub should be. Warm, friendly, inviting
