Just a little word - wherever we go in the UK on holiday we look for a decent pub within a few miles so we can be guaranteed a good meal out & a decent pint. We very rarely find one to come anywhere close to OUR LOCAL witht he best kept ale & excellent food. Listen up & believe it : We are BLESSED to be living in the MALDON district - 1. one of the most picturesque regions of the country & largely undiscovered 2, with among the lowest crime levels in the country 3. the driest weather 4. the BEST pubs. Norfolk hasn't a single pub that has worked out how to make pubs work post smoking ban but John has. Granted, the seats could do with re-upholstering & the ceiling with a coat of paint, but there aren't many pubs you can get world class ales AND camp at or take the kids to feed the chickens, now are there?

Myself, my sister & two small kids on a short break in the New Forest, staying at a local B & B & needing somewhere to eat - Tried the Bold Forester Beaulieu Road & found it to be incredibly disappointing (ie a sh*th*le)
We found the Pilgrim to have good ales on tap, an excellent & accessible menu ie not too poncy, but very delicious with good local produce. We were able to get 4 excellent meals served to us within about 20 mins (we were pretty early) & the whole lot cost us less then 40. I haven't any problem with that at all!
Staff were responsive & courteous & place is clearly popular as it filled right up whilst we were there. As an aside - the decor & ambience is nice & upholstery all recently redone & the toilets are also pretty posh too.

The Old Ship Inn, Heybridge Basin
Nice for a pint & a plate of whitebait watchng the boats - maldon Gold & broadside on tap . Dog & family frindly.
Haven't had a full meal there for about a year but was a bit dissappointed last time - even choosing the most basic menu choices (fish fingers for kids etc) it was a bit naff (very cheap fish fingers). They do get really busy & I've a suspicion that what the previous people said about management might be right (although not sure when it changed hands last - probably several times over last 10 years)
