Mitre Tavern, Brighton
During Brighton Pride we popped into this pub to avoid the rain and enjoy a quiet pint. At first we were a little apprehensive, it is quite clearly a back street boozer and we we heading in directly from the pride fair, so we weren't sure how we would be received. The rainbow flags strung up outside the pub filled us with a false sense of security and we went in despite our better judgement. What a mistake! The pub isn't in the slightest bit gay friendly, in fact, it isn't friendly at all. The locals are extremely loud, aggressive and very rude. First they started with mutterings and under the breath jibes until it escalated into full blown insults. Needless to say we decided to forget the drink and leave as quickly as possible. On the way out we were followed by an extremely offensive male local who was clearly after a fight with the "dykes" (as we were called). What a gentleman!
I still can't understand why they had flags hung outside, I can only assume it was to cash in on the event, well they didn't make any money out of us!
I hope that nobody makes the same mistake we did, it ruined our weekend and tainted Brighton.
