Old Ship Aground, Minehead

10 out of 10!!! Wow! We were so impressed by the fact that it's a 'proper pub with good beer' but exceptional food at reasonable prices. We were in town for the day. We don't know the area, but we love our food, good beer and wine. Service is especially important to us but its not on the top of most pubs and restaurants agenda - so we were surprised after walking through Minehead for 'fish and chips' to discover 'The Old Ship Aground', its great service and top notch grub. We'd missed lunch, but were amazed when landlord Julian Abraham presented us with a delectable menu of 'Bar Snacks'. We chose, deep fried, crispy whitebait which was served on a bed of leaves and a light dressing, a bucket of crispy chips served with mayo and a bowl of warm cider and mushroom and mustard grain creamy dip with warm crispy bread. ALL served at the same time, generous portions, hot and served to our table by 2 smiling waitresses. An excellent selection of beer was available. My partner had a very well kept pint of Marston's Pedigree and I was recommend a very pleasing glass of sauvignon. White, crisp and cold!! Imagine that! A glass of cold, white wine!! (makes a change from the usual warm glass of acid served in most pubs). We were seated by the fireside, surrounded by locals at the bar. With the view, looking out to the sea, was a perfect pit stop. We would've stayed longer, but had to catch the last train. Congratulations Julian. You looked the part. Acted the part, with care and concern and we wish you luck with your pub. Your waitresses are a credit and so is your food. I guess it says it all when the locals frequent your pub. We'll be back. Good luck!
