This used to be a great pub a few years ago but on our two recent visits the 1 available real ale was appalling and the food (we didnt eat) looked poor. There were complaints from customers who were eating regarding the delays. Many better pubs in the area

The Langstrath Country Inn, Stonethwaite
Have visited 3 times over a few years the last time being last week. A lovely setting and Garden but can't say it's friendly! On every occassion the owner has had some reason why he can't supply what customers have wanted. Most recently a couple (who were staying there) asked him to top up their pints of shandy as they were about an inch below the top.He made a real fuss about how difficult it all was and how much the wastage cost him, went on to say that many pubs in the area wouldn't serve shandy. The Scawfell down the road serves full pints of shandy without any qualms!
Handy if you have just come off the mountains and need a pint but Beer quality wasn't great either on last visit.

The Star Inn, Talybont on Usk
Been a fan of the Star for many years but Ian, the Landlord, has steadily improved the place since he took over without altering it's old world charm. Very friendly and food is excellent with many home-made specials served.
Usually 6 real ales/cider in good form and these change very regularly. Nice garden alongside river.
Ideal place to end up at after a hard walk on the Beacons.
