Lovely country pub in a great setting. Decent size pub grub/drinking area as well as a separate restuarant which we visisted. About 5 ales on with a couple from Jennings (Marstons) - tried one of the 3.7% Micros and it was well kept although it should be as It was 3.60/pint. The food was very nice; I tried the lamb, and service prompt and friendly (we had a table at 6pm and they wanted us out by 8pm so obviously!) Prices were a little on the high side. we had the pleaure of spending an evening here before doing scafell pike the next morning. the beer was fantastic, the food was a little pricey but very good quaility. eating in the pub area was a pleasure too as the restaurant area, is very restauranty. The service was by far and away the best part of the evening, with the brilliant bar maid, making us tourists feel very welcome. general friendly banter, she advised us on starting points for the walk next day, and even told us of a spot where we could park the van up and sleep for the night for free, undisturbed. if and when i return to scafell pike, i will also be returning here. Went here recently after a day of full-on mountain biking and found the place to be excellent for replenishing those energy levels for more of the same the next day. The food was lovely and the staff were very friendly. The only shame was that on a Saturday night, there was only one ale on (it is still winter in the Lakes after all, I know, before I get blasted for this comment!). However, this one beer - Jennings Cumberland - was gorgeous. It's not a beer that I normally have a liking for, but this was very well kept and tasted so much better than when/where I've had it before. We all kept coming back for more. Would definitely recommend this place. littledrummerboy - 14 Mar 2011 10:34 |
We stopped in for lunch back in June on a rather damp trek from Keswick to Grasmere and the Langstrath proved to be just what we were looking for. Staff friendly (and suitably tolerant of bedraggled hiker types like us), not the cheapest but good wholesome food and excellent ale that could've proved very more-ish indeed if we hadn't had the tramp over Greenup Edge to look forward to that afternoon. Would definitely go back if I was in the area. tim_eyles - 25 Nov 2009 14:35 |
Another story about the old management. A few years back, on our wedding anniversary, my wife and I took our young daughters on a walk over Rosthwaite Fell and Glaramara. Tired and muddy after a bit of an 'epic' we returned to Stonethwaite as dusk fell, keeping our spirits up by talking about the beers and crisps that awaited us. When we arrived at the inn the landlord 'appeared'- almost as if he had been waiting for us. Looking at us suspicially - obviously thinking we were camping at the local site - he informed us that we couldn't use the toilets or use the sinks for washing. When we said we had come for refreshments after a long walk, he said that he couldn't let us in the bar with the kids as they could only be allowed in if we had a meal. Fine, we replied, we had been thinking about having dinner as well. Sorry, he said, you're just too late; last orders for dinner was 5 minutes ago. I hope he has found anther pub to run, we can't afford to lose men like him.. fredmitch - 18 Dec 2008 18:04 |
