Clydesdale Inn, Lanark

Yep, a safe bet. A great range of real ales at an amazing price. This does lend to a gaggle of local boozers who come in every day, although they do tend to be pretty harmless.

My only criticism would be that the bar can get clogged up with people ordering food, and the quality of barperson is a bit hit/miss.

The Allan Ramsay Hotel, Carlops

I only ever go there on Sundays, but based on that, it's one of my favourite pubs. Not as mobbed as the Flotterstone, and not as 'Clique' as the Gordon Arms.

It can be over-run at the bar with the 'shooters' (clay traps) or the 'Icelandics' (pony folk) for an hour at a time though.

A wee bit expensive on the food and beer too, but the bar staff are genuinely friendly.

It's the best place in the world after a bit of exertion in the Pentlands. Get a fireside seat in winter, and watch all your worries melt away...
