The Admiral Benbow, Shrewsbury
UPDATE: Still as good, if not better, that it was when I last reported in Feb 2004. As a local lad it is stil one of my regulars The support for this freehouse has gone from strength to strength. Latest in the line up is a conservative, but initially sensible, range of Belgian Beer; Chimay Blue, Red and White, Duvel, Orval, a couple of Liefmanns Krieks and a little hop over the border for some German Erdinger Weissbire and their Dunkelweiss. Real Cider and Perry now feature constantly with usually two ciders and a perry, all gravity fed from cellar located casks. Look out for the Renshaw Red Eye Cider, a medium to dry 8%er which doesnt taste like its ABV, watch out.. it will hit you in the back of the head when you least expect it. Well done Mike & Claire, superb and long may it continue!

UPDATE Addlestons Cloudy Cider has gone; only to be replaced with the wonderful Thatchers Cheddar Valley 6.0% with its lava-lamp characteristics. Three Tuns Three Eight is now a sporadic visitor, but Three Tuns XXX is almost permanent. The Heinz Varieties of the Beer World, Archers, keep on the blending trail to add more curious named beers to their portfolio. New on, and selling well is the Becks Vier which replaced the not-so-well-selling Artois Bock. Still an excellent pub, one of my regulars, and well worth going to if you like you ales.

The Wheatsheaf, Shrewsbury
UPDATE: For a Shrewsbury Marstons/Banks/WDB outlet this one shines. The Landlord, James, waves his magic wand (or bends ears, i don't know for sure!) to get the most choice possible from the Pubco and with the, welcome (or not by most), acquisitions by WDB of Jennings et al, the stable has grown quite a bit. There are usually 5 real ales on at any one time. If you like Wine and Spirits there is an excellent choice if you want a change. If you are in Shrewsbury, pop in and make your own mind up. Incidentally,They have outside seating in the Shrewsbury High Street in Summer and you can watch the world crawl by (Shrewsbury Traffic Congestion pun!). Dont foget to visit the, not too far away, Loggerheads, see seperate entry.
