4 ales on, helpful & friendly barmaid, I had Six Bells Brewery 'Owdo' [nice pint] & Slaters 'Top Totty [ a very smooth creamy ale]. alehippy - 1 Oct 2018 13:56 |
Traditional popular pub with a pleasant & friendly landlady; it possesses a good smoking area. I indulged in Sixbells brewery ''Cloud Nine'' [decent pint], Ludlow Brewing Co. ''Gold'' [nice creamy beer] & Hobson''s ''Town Crier'' [a well kept pint]. alehippy - 14 Sep 2017 15:53 |
Okay but nothing special. I'd be happy enough to stay here for a session but there are better alternatives close by. djw - 15 Jul 2017 21:01 |
Didn’t realise that I hadn’t reported on this pub before, so I forgot to make nay notes, and I’d had a few by the time I got here, so the memory is rather hazy ! However, here goes The Benbow is located in the quiet backstreet, just a short walk away from the main shopping streets. On first entry it appears rather small, with the bar more or less straight ahead and drinking areas to the left and right. However, if you go to the toilets to find there is another room behind the bar (on the left) and a beer garden / fag alley on the right. I do remember being confused by the handpumps being covered in clips – about 3 to each pump ! In all I think there were 7 real ales available, but the clips were for ciders as well. Like Wezzielad, I had the Ludlow Gold which was reasonable. Most of the other beers were localish, but not very exciting. I also remember candles on the tables, and discussions with the locals about the difference between Stockholm and Stockhausen ! 6/10 – reasonable pub, but not the best in town. A medium sized room pub with a large outdoor seating area and an extra room that you will see if you go to the toilet. The pub itself has an oldish feel to it and has various objects dedicated to sailing, including a picture of Admiral John Benbow himself, behind the bar they have clips of beers that they have sold in the past. The ales seem to be from all local(ish) breweries. Including Salopian Hop Twister, Ludlow Brewery Gold, 1066 by Battlefield Brewery, and HPA by Wye Valley. The pint of Ludlow gold was nice and cost 3.20. Barmaid was friendly and the locals seemed okay. Music was playing in the background and there was a television but that was not on. Definitely one of Shrewsbury's better pubs from my experience Wezzielad - 8 Jan 2017 19:09 |
