The Somerhill, Tonbridge

It was much better when it was the Hooooden Horse.

Now it's like a dingy local's pub with thick looking staff, but with a "I wish I was modern" sheen. Fails at that though.

Go here if you're a local chav, who likes a nice pine furniture surrounding for your stella and hoop earinged tart.

The Fox and Hounds, Battersea

I can see the point of view of all the people who sl*g this place off. I mean, Clapham is a developing area. The house prices are increasing and the pubs, shops and bars etc are slowly changing to accommodate the new young residents.

As this area increases in price, the residents slowly change to young families, young professionals, people like that. Presumably, the 'pretentious types' people speak of.

I assume that the people who complain about these 'pretentious' types didn't speak to any of them when they came in here. Not having spoken to any of them, I assume they must simply be referring to these people's dress sense, choice of drink, accent, taste. Fair enough. But to be honest; if they don't like the types of people you get in these sorts of areas, then they probably wont like going to many pubs in these areas.

So perhaps they shouldn't go at all?

Now; I'm a lager, bitter as well as a big real ale fan, and like atmospheric, old, traditional pubs with a large choice of ales.
I also like pubs with good service, decent beer, warm wood decor, friendly atmosphere, good food and a great leafy patio garden full of friendly people who wont beat you up if you look at them funny.

I like this place. Perhaps some of the previous reviewers should question whether it is simply just their drink which is bitter?

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, Nottingham

I love it. It's one of the oldest pubs in the world... although that's obviously debatable.

I've never had any food there, but the beer is real, the service good, the decor totally unique -its supprisingly nice drinking in a a cave! It really feels like you've stepped back in time. Totally great for a lunchtime drink, as it can get a little busy. But thats because it's good!

See if you can spot the haunted boat. Clean it and you die... errr... alledgedly. ;-)

Lord Keeper Of The Great Seal, Oadby

This was my local while I was at Leicester Uni from 1998-2001. It was always packed with students due being the nearest pub to the halls of residence about half a mile away.

I remember drinking Theakstons (89p a pint!!!!!!!!!) all day, until I think... we became known as the Theakstons lot. Hmmm. Well, we were students after all.

The bar staff were a mixed bunch though. Jeff seemed to like us, along with Beardy bloke. But the Fat One accused us of stealing a halloween trinket whilst we were in the middle of complaining about the food. Ally went out with the Lanky Plain One.

Oh well -those were the days.

Apart from my own memories, its basically a standard Wetherspoons, with the nice addition of looking a bit like a library. All the usual average food and drink, guest ales -you know the drill.

The Punch and Judy, Tonbridge

Nice small pub, with that cozy dark wood effect. Nice tucked away tables and an attractive bar with an old country style.

It used to have great Thai food (now at the Ivy House), but no longer, which is a shame.

The beers are the usual Kent affair, Spitfire, then the usuals.

It seems to be a locals pub primarily, but with the odd group of surley looking 30-somethings. Everyone's really friendly though.

Its got a big screen and a quiz machine. Theres a garden, but you DONT go out there.

Oh and most of the time, there's this massive Irish Wolfhound... so if you dont like stepping over dogs on your way to the toilet, then your trouble.

The toilet's are pretty bad though. Not dirty, but cold and molding.

Still, great place!

The Fox and Hounds, Battersea

This is a great pub -although I do live 3 doors down from it, so am perhaps a little biased.

The decor is done in a nice dark wood, and the lighting lends it a very cozy atmosphere. You walk in and your feet creek pleasantly on the floorboards as you weave between the tables.

The beer is unremarkable although there is a choice of lagers and ales. The food is great though! The menu changes almost daily, is different and of a high quality.

The staff are friendly and efficient.

The garden is so well enclosed with many leaves, that it gives the impression of a camp in the forest. Add the nice ginger cat that hangs about (it slept on my lady's lap the other day) and youve got a great hang out.

Theres no scum and no ultra ponces either. Just a good mix of young pro's and locals.
