Why do the bar staff keep throwing and i mean THROWING empty beer bottles into a bin behind the bar. .CRASH.. every minute, it can be heard all the way across the room. I've even seen glass fly up when they do this.
27 Mar 2017 01:50
Don't know of a wine bar here anymore. I think it is now a Send & Receive Parcels establishment.

The Hammer and Tongs, Basingstoke

The Kingsbridge Inn, Bourton on the Water
Walked in..no one at the bar. Waited for five minutes with a tenner in my hand. Barmaid suddenly appeared and beckoned to a guy who was six foot behind me to hand his pint mug over my shoulder and served him first.. obviously he was a regular! Lol.

The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Had a great Sunday roast here and it looks like so many people did here also in the family eating area. Shame about the loud mouths who were drinking heavily and swearing. Tis a family pub where children are allowed.

22 Oct 2014 01:22
Training on how to pull a hand pump beer is essential. I will be looking.

The Castle pub in Basingstoke was shamefully named 'Poison' The pub has now been demolished to make way for re-development so no sign of it is there.

A small character public bar with outhousing when i visited in June 2012. loved the wood decor around me and the draught beer. Very cosy, very safe. People lunching seemed very friendly - at ease and sociable.

The Swan Inn, North Warnborough
Will this pub ever open again after the fire. It had plastic hoarding up around it and it looked as though some repair work was going on, not so sure now, it still looks a mess.

The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Well done JDW for introducing some more new ales into the town at the beer festival time. Had a great Sunday dinner here last week with a bottle of wine: the food was super .
6 Nov 2012 00:14
A 'must go here' if you are passing. Limited parking along the High street. Not a spacious place, very 'nooky' but open, very tea roomy.

10 Mar 2011 02:14
Old Thumper was in EXCELLENT condition. Only had time for six pints then had to go back to work. The back room diner area is looking so much better. Liked the landlords hair.

The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
If you are into draught ales..here's the place cos there's no where else in town that offers a range like this.
5 Nov 2010 00:47
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
A good turnover of new and old favorite draught ales for the newcomer, well done, cos you don't see it anywhere else in Basingstoke. The chilled bottle selection is as good as ever. The food is good., nice and hot.
14 Oct 2010 02:35
Such a tiny place inside..no place if you are claustrophobic but therein lies its charm as a small unchanged English pub.
24 Aug 2010 01:41
It's an ok place. Nice food. Three draught ales on at this time of writing. Not a bad selection of menu and special boards food. Outside seating. Garden area. Very friendly staff...who chased after me when I forgot to pay the bill and caught up with me in the Co Op opposite.
24 Aug 2010 01:13
Well it was a pub once, but is now a bar, as in Censobar.
14 Aug 2010 20:06

16 Jun 2010 00:44
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Hate to say this but it's a sweary place.it's not as looked after as it used to be. Took my mum in there a few weeks ago and it was full of cavemen swearing. Departed quickly, but mum wanted to stay.

12 Dec 2009 13:52
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Never had a prob with this place. Ok, there are few drunken over-chatty undesirables in here who tend to burst into song at the drop of a hat..but that is in the morning at about 11.30 and to be fair..they have been drinking since 09.15 in there. You either like this place or you dont.Nice food..good prices..not bad at all. Good selection of beers..very good.
4 Sep 2009 11:49

Been back here a quite few times and i like it. Don't know what it's like during the week. Sunday lunch -beef- was excellent.tasty big meal for about six pounds something. The clique who used to worry me..really are ok..just shy of strangers i think. Bar and kitchen staff are really kind. Thank you HW xxx Bry

The Great Western Hotel, Basingstoke
Did anyone go to the Gay night that they had on the Sat 25th October?
28 Oct 2008 13:58
The Marlborough Head, Marble Arch
If this pub opens before halloween then they should put a huge 'SCREAM' face around the gents' urinal basins so we that we can pee into the scarey open droopin mouth.
16 Oct 2008 14:02
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Still the best place in Basingstoke to get a variety of ales.
1 Oct 2008 13:48
The Bass was a great spaceous pub in its day,it was the pub-to-be-in at the time..then it got dirty (shame on the managers)and then it closed. At the very least.. it was a pub and not a gastrobar.
30 Sep 2008 15:10
Don't rush or you may walk past it! A village pub off the small high street..go there just for the'old english pub' atmosphere.
28 Sep 2008 14:16
The Great Western Hotel, Basingstoke
10 August.. not sure if it's closed for a while but it's being given an exterior face lift..cool..it looks ok.
10 Aug 2008 14:57

Good ole Wetherspoons for supporting the Micro-brewers.
27 Jul 2008 14:05
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Did anyone try the Plum Ale that they had on lately..? tasted of John Smiths' bitter mixed with Ribena. I pass no opinion.
10 Jul 2008 15:36
I never got to go to this pub cos i couldn't find it. Sounds a pom place( I ended up in the Steyne Hotel near the Manly ferry).

Well done to all the micro brewers who have brewed so many good county ales and distribution.

The Pepys Bar at the Novotel Hotel, Tower Hill
Quite enjoyed my stay at Novetel a France pres Paris. Super hygene room service. Thought the hotel bar was a bit pricey though.. 20 euros for a lager and a Bayley's.
5 Apr 2008 14:43
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
At the mo there's a plethora o good draught beers here at spoons.
1 Apr 2008 15:46
Dexters Bar and Grill, Basingstoke
My mum and friends went in here the other night and she said that the food was fine and the service was brilliant. They just wished that they could smoke inside.
19 Mar 2008 13:49
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
The lunchtime food is ok as are the great ales. Get in quick cos the staff are under pressure and it might be a while before you get noticed or even served.

The Great Western Hotel, Basingstoke
Such a great looking building. What a waste on zombies..der!
9 Mar 2008 15:18
The Lord Nelson, Old Kent Road
Hope they never replace this place with something modern! It's earned it's place here in the Old Kent road. Actually, it's probably the best looking building along the block!
6 Mar 2008 14:33
The Great Western Hotel, Basingstoke
I walked passed the other afternoon..definitely has been redecorated, just need the the hutzpah to go in!!
22 Feb 2008 13:51
Not called McCarthy's Bar anymore. Now called Censobar. Let's not get confused here. Definitely a more up-market place, but never as convivial as the the Hop Leaf.
18 Feb 2008 14:39
No, it's not a shocker of a place compared with what, Winch? Course they do plastic glasses (EU law demands it). So you never headed a pint glass in the Nightjar, shame on you!
12 Feb 2008 15:00
After the rip out /refit and the rename to 'Censobar' i think it looks pretty good inside. I was impressed that they've not only kept but visually improved the old interior wooden beam work; even exposing some that were hidden. My mum liked the big sofa seating in the front bar and how the whole place seemed fresher and bigger. I think it has retained it's character..just.
2 Feb 2008 14:41
Is this a night club cos it wasn't open today at 12:30 pm today.. do they do midday food here?
15 Jan 2008 14:02
Ah yes, but with the one next door you can have all this for half the price.
23 Dec 2007 12:49
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Hope they get some good bottled 'winter warmer' brews in at xmas, 8% abv and above would be nice. A nice example would be some Stingo.
7 Nov 2007 14:07
Great looking pub as alot of them are here in the High St. Among draughts was 'Titanic' bitter which pulled well. Enjoyed the lunch time menu.
14 Aug 2007 13:38
Go to this pub, it's one of the few traditional pubs left in Basinstoke as opposed to new town centre bars.
29 Jul 2007 14:37
The Great Western Hotel, Basingstoke
It must be open again today cos a new sign in the window reads: 'OPEN AGAIN TODAY'.
28 Jul 2007 13:52
The Marlborough Head, Marble Arch
I took my mum in here a few weeks ago one lunchtime, she absolutely loved the dark Goth decor downstairs and the ok food.
27 Jul 2007 14:20
The Great Western Hotel, Basingstoke
Notices on the doors say. 'Still closed for redecorating.'
24 Jul 2007 14:42
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Anon -18 July. I agree it's nice to have a bit of background music but I think they did once, didn't they? Trouble is you can't please all the people all the time unless you play boring elevator moozak and then nobody takes any notice.
21 Jul 2007 13:53
The Chicago Rock Cafe, Basingstoke
I've had some really good saturday evenings here doing my own thiing ie getting pissed and dancing. I don't get paranoid cos i do my own thing!
18 Jul 2007 14:44
The Gloucester Arms, Bermondsey
This pub no longer exists. It used to be an ok place. It got pulled down in 2006 and some 2-storey dwellings are being proposed for the site.
16 Jul 2007 13:43
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Hope everyone's taking advantage of the Wetherspoon's tokens. The lowest price possible surely! Pedigree bitter 1.09 a pint.
13 Jul 2007 14:27
If you are into olde worlde pubs, ie 50's and 60's style then check this place out. It's not a huge place so its character is really concentrated on what it's got. Hope they never change the place.
30 May 2007 14:49
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Don't know of any other outlet that sells quality draught and botted beers at contending prices.
30 Apr 2007 13:34
Enterprise Inns have a wall sign outside advertising the propery as a pub business. There might be hope for the oold place yet, but please, not another property agents!
28 Apr 2007 14:30
This pub could never be the same as it used to be because times have changed. Ok, it was once a bon homie pub, but, people have changed and they don't need the old style pub anymore where the landlord sold the odd packet o crisps and a pint of ale.
18 Apr 2007 14:24
Well I worked for IBM as well and used this watering-hole on friday lunchies and finishers. Loved this place especially when they had Bass IPA and Bass Special (top gas) on.
16 Apr 2007 14:48
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Spoilt for choice lately.. What with Cains Creamy stout and today Old growler amongst others. Where else can you go to sample so many different guest beers?
24 Mar 2007 13:26
Much redecorated last year and now looks cleaner and smarter. Big comfortable leather sofas and chairs in the brightly decorated lounge. Nice dining areas. Some say it's lost a bit of it's charm but I would prefer to eat there now than before. Not sure what the evenings are like as i may only use it weekend lunchtimes.
2 Mar 2007 17:46
The Marlborough Head, Marble Arch
This pub first got themed in the sixties when the bar downstairs was called the Fishermans wharf. Plastic fish nets and lobster pots were tastefully placed here and there. Now the dim downstairs is an aperetif for the London Dungeons. Candlelit rustic tables with orangey walllights. I enjoyed the fun thing about it. The London Pride beer was ok too.
24 Feb 2007 14:07
Closed! Not surprised really, it wasn't doing much trade.
19 Feb 2007 17:52
Tiny traditional one bar pub (don't count the small set aside eating area at the back, that came later). Being small it's really cosey and strangers just seem to chat to each other cos they are standing /sitting so close to each other. Used this pub of a lunch time when i worked in Winchester and still go back when i can. They usually have a couple of strong draught ales on. Worth a visit in my opinion.
22 Dec 2006 18:07
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
Liked the draught beer that they had on today, 'Stairway'. Crispy taste, a bit thin on malt I thought but a good hoppy flavour (Goldings?).
Couldn't get served for the first 15 minutes as there was only 1 bar staff on but she did a good considering.
16 Dec 2006 14:07
The Lord Nelson, Old Kent Road
This pub has stood it's ground when all around has changed. Is it mid-Victorian?..not sure. Had a couple of beers in here recently one afternoon. Not much of a selection to choose from but it was nice just to sit in the place. It's looked much like this since i can remember. Glad they (?) haven't ripped the old place apart.
10 Dec 2006 14:15
Under new management and it could be off to a good start. One draught beer, 'Courage best bitter'. Started serving hot food again. Seems cleaner in the place. Could have done with a few more peeps in there though - 12.30pm.
25 Nov 2006 13:34
The old 'rising sun' did take a bit of a slide in recent years; it needed decorating. But hey presto it's been done for the better and it looks and tastes great. Smarter, cleaner and much more roomier, a split level look makes it a different pub/dinery altogether. Full Marks.
1 Oct 2006 14:01
On a hot sunny afternoon we found this little treasure of a pub. Good draught beer and like walking back in time to a 50's pub. I'll go there again.
1 Oct 2006 13:36
Courages Best Bitter..that's about it for draught beer. I went in on sept 15 at 17:10 and asked for a pint of aforementioned beer but what came up was a pint of cloudy cloudy vinegar (drip tray stuff.) Scenario: walk in pub, ask for beer, barman goes into back bar and comes back very quickly with vinegar cocktail, i refuse pint, barman doesn't bat an eyelid and takes beer away, barman pours really good pint in front of me from front bar. Hmmmmm. Safer with lager.
22 Sep 2006 18:04
The biggest pub in town, this was. If I won the lottery I would knock down the Tesco store and re-open it as the Bass house cos it was much more fun.
12 Sep 2006 18:26
The Great Western Hotel, Basingstoke
I went past the pub this morning and stuck on all the closed doors was a notice, 'CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.'
12 Sep 2006 18:20
The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke
There's been some super ales in here lately; can't remember their names, but,one of them was about 9 abv, which the staff would only let me order in half pints.
18 Jul 2006 12:47
What's happened to this place lately?. First it was non-smoking then half smoking now it's smoking throughout..that's when it's open. The last time I went in there, the real ales had been taken out, there was no John Smiths,no coffee,no tea and it looked like no one had attempted to put a broom to the floor. It was much better as the 'Hop leaf'.
11 Mar 2006 10:43
Three Barrels, Basingstoke
I went past there the just the other and i think it was boarded up.
