Stayed for a couple of nights very pleasant staff nice breakfast beer was ok sleep ruined by a group of local herberts drinking outside the front Effing and Blinding for a couple of hours late at night and the annoying electric macerators in all of the rooms that go off every 10/15 mins JUST ADJUST THE BALLCOCKS AND STOP THE WATER OVERFLOWING
The sausage festival was on so no other food avaliable did my best to work through the large variety but had to admit defeat after 12 and only managed 13 of the real ales
We will go back later in the year when it should be a bit quieter

Nice drop of Youngs lunch time food was fine gets a bit rowdy late afternoons with the local chavs having a drink after work but the evening crowd are ok

Popped in today and must say not very impressed prick and ping menu
EPA Bitter not very good I dont think the pipes had been cleaned in a while and the barmaid didn't pull any off and I was the first one in
Could be a very good pub if the decor suited and staff showed an interest
Dogs and children not welcome

Popped in to day 6X and Youngs very nice But the staff behind the bar!!!
Surly would be the understatement of the year we ordered 1 Sausage ploughmans and 1Sausage and Onion baggette bearing in mind that there was only 7 people in we waited for 30 mins for food to come out and when it did Sausage ploughmans =1 sausage teaspoon Branston pickle spoon of coleslaw plate of limp lettuce 1 dried roll
Cracking little pub but let down by poor quality food and very poor customer service
If you only go in for a beer then you might be surprised but don't expect good pub grub and a smiling welcome

The Dog and Partridge, Kings Langley
Real shame to see another good one going Top quality ale well kept once again a village pub going down the pan due to locals not supporting it
300 new homes and not one new punter
Looks like its going to be converted in to a B&B a real shame

Weekends it gets rammed best time to visit midweek nice pint of Green King IPA Bit pricey but its to be expected for a town centre boozer

A half decent Jack o legs was the only ale on offer to many lager filled oafs in for my liking
Ale did seem a bit cold I guess thats down to the weather as I like it a degree or two warmer

Dropped in on Sat night beer was very disapointing IPA wasn't right and guest beer Fireside wasn't much better
Only 2 young staff on and they spent their time chatting to pals and standing outside smoking

londonnw7 I don't know if you have visited the Old Fox Bricket Wood or the old fox in cloud cuckoo land jovial owner I dont think so!! Big plans I dont think so its well known that he wants to de-regulate the pub and turn it into a private house Fine selection of beers Blonde and Doom nice beers when they are looked after Last time I had a Doom I had to throw it away as for food I think not
He has ruined the interior knocking down internal walls(listed building)
Having visited the pub for the last 20 years I have to say that the current owners are the worst landlord and landlady that I have seen its a country pub walkers with dirty boots dogs with muddy paws have been visiting for years and in the winter keep the pub going so by not having dogs walkers and ramblers in during the winter time means the pub can run at a loss and it can be de-regulated and turned in to a private house 2 years down the line this pub will not be here and another little gem will be lost for ever

The Elephant and Castle, Amwell
Have been there a couple of times(when we could find it) beer has always been very well looked after and food was very good nice to see that they still cater for walkers dogs and cyclists
Can get very busy in the warmer months

I recently walked by the pub on Saturday afternoon and found that it was shut and speaking to a couple of dog walkers they tell me that the pub is rarely open these days so much so that most of the remaining regulars now drink at the Dog and Partridge at Hunton Bridge
When the pub does open I have heard that dogs and ramblers are now allowed in if the landlady is in a good mood!!

I visited the Old Fox on Tuesday afternoon without the dog and was surprised to see three people in there
The pumps have been refurbed with John Smiths smooth Fosters Bulmers cider and Nigerian larger
Adnams which wasnt very good Sharpes Doombar and Im glad to see Tring Blonde which Im told was put on due to popular request
There was a guy outside with a whippet X who had to huddle under a large umbrella when there was a sudden downpour
It would seem that most of the dog walkers now use The Gate pub further along in Bricket Wood
I cannot for the life of me see why the new owners are still persevering with the NO DOG rule as trade seems to have dropped right way and it is the peak season for their trade and with autum and winter fast approaching the ramblers and dog owners now using other local pubs just who will drink in there during the dark months??

UPDATE
I popped in at lunch time today Monday and as we all suspected dogs are now banned
Still no beer on tap apart from lager, John Smiths in a can and Marston Pedigree in bottles 3.20 a shot
Talking to the new owners he told me the bar is being refurbed soon and all of the ale pumps are being removed and dog walkers and ramblers will be discouraged as the are not the types they want in
Dog hairs and muddy boots make the place look untidy
So good luck to us all on finding a new dog friendly pub!!!!

Would have to agree with all of the comments
I took the dog in and had a meal as I finished the landlord came over and told me to leave as they had a small group waiting outside who wouldnt come in while my dog was in the bar so I upped and left only for the landlord to come running after me demanding payment
Shame really as the beer wasn"t a bad drop, food was good to but over pricey
So I now drink over the road twice a week when Im in the area walking the dog

I used to drink in the Wheater in the early 80s what a cracking pub it was then top quality beer and service
I recently revisited a couple of weeks ago and what a crap hole it has now turned into
Its been knocked about and all of the old charm has gone and as for the beer absolutely crapulous, service is hopeless , and the food??
frozen ready meals microwaved
so a big fat 1rating for me

Being a Peterborough boy born and bred and having my first legal pint in "the arms"(and a few before that) I made a return visit to the place my first since 1992 and I was most surprised the front of the place had not changed but the inside was transformed the beer was just as I remembered
it, a good selection of Elgoods Ales and the food was excellent
Unfortunatly the pub still has a reputation as being a gypsy pub and it does not receive the acclaim that it deserves there has been a huge amount of house building going on in the last 20 years around the pub and it should be well supported but due to its history people seem to ignore it and thats a real shame
I really enjoyed my night in there its just a shame that more locals dont use it
10 Jun 2009 20:59
Just as the pub was getting back on its feet good old PUNCH TAVERNS
has sold it and the news does not sound good it appears that the excellent selection of real ales will make way for John Smiths smooth and no doubt the usual mix of lagers
The cream teas are now a thing of the past and I suspect the fruit machine will make a comeback!! Ken and his good lady Lea really made a difference in the short time they run the place and they will be sadly missed trade really picked up and on saturdays and sundays there was a lot of customers who made return visits we even had a coach full of ramblers from Suffolk not to mention the increase in dog walkers
Watch this space as the pub is now closed for "refurbishment"

The Yanwath Gate Inn, Yanwath
Dropped in for a bite to eat Saturday evening quite an upmarket menu so I settled for the Rabbit on the specials board and the better half opted for the Dover Sole food was very good tried a couple of local ales which were ok
This place needs to decide if its a pub or a class eatery it doesn't have the feel of a local or a restaurant
No complaints about the food or the service very attentive staff prices were I thought a little on the pricey side
