I have met this landlord at the Nags Head - he seemed like a nice chap to me! Still, the castle remains a peculiarly soulless place - strange really, when the Nags is so nice.

Cheap as chips and full of colourful characters. The only pub I have seen where people regularly flout the smoking ban! Not as horrible as it ought to be!

The Rose and Crown, Walthamstow
This is a nice friendly pub. The ale is well chosen and well priced and the bar staff friendly. Has a nice mix of people from all walks of life. Drink there!

This is an excellent pub - though it has an inexplicable anti-children policy and a bizarre sign fetish!
Still, it's one of the nicest places in the whole of North East London for a quiet pint. Strongly recommended.

I think this is the only non-scary late-license pub in Walthamstow. Fantastic place for a beer on a Friday night - lively friendly diverse crowd and similarly diverse music.
Why do more decent pubs in E17 not open late?
During the week it is quieter and mainly occupied by footie-watchers, so if that's not your cuppa, try the Village or the Nags instead - both serve and excellently kept pint.

Tried this out the other day following great reviews on this site and was sadly disappointed. There were three ales on, but non were well kept. The whole place had an air of "seen better days". The pubs in nearby Walthamstow Village are much nice.

The Bell, Walthamstow
Now reopened under new management and what a transformation! Deliciously kept beer, lovely stripped down decor, this is a great example of the "modern urban London pub" style which is increasingly appearing in Zones 2 and 3, and the first pub of this kind in the E17 area.
It is early days, but the first indications are excellent. Friendly staff, wide range of ales o, good music and also great opening hours (until 1am Fri and Sat).
If I were to suggest improvements it would be to include more small local brewers (e.g. Brodies, Redemption) and less of the big national brewers (Doom Bar, Timothy Taylor) - it would also be great to see some more interesting draft lagers (e.g. Camden Town or Brewdog), but what a fantastic start. Cheers!
