I lived in Blackrod from 1972 - 1978 in Harrison Crescent. Was this pub then called the New Inn in the hollow just past where Dr Cyril (Unsworth ) lived?
I used to go fairly often and really liked it - used to meet Dr Cyril there sometimes and his friend Peter McNab who lived in Vicarage Road and worked at British Leyland and was something to do with the trade union there. We had lots of good long conversations and arguments in there.
During the big freeze, was it 1947? when Blackrod was cut off and a soup kitchen was established on the A6 the story goes that a Wigan bus was stranded just outside the New Inn on the bend and the driver stayed in the pub for 3 days during which time the snow drifts covered the double decker completely!
I know both Dr Cyril and his brother Dr Jim both died relatively young (60-ish) but does anyone remember Peter McNab - is he still alive>
