The Ship Inn, Wandsworth

My parents met here 40 years ago so it gets a 10 from me or i'd not be here.

That aside its a great pub.

apologies, i meant the round oak..

either way, where the pound shop is now (opposite primark) is where wetherspoons should be and they could actually make a killing.

The Princess of Shoreditch, Old Street

nice pub, strikingly pretty brunette working there at the moment. :) ok ok, its got stripped decor but is morehomely than the fox and its got a nice selection of spirits.

The Grove, Balham

yeah i'm a big fan, been in a few times in the last 6 months and it is a very well thought out pub with a nice atmosphere and a good mix of people both behind and infront of the bar.

Keep up the good work!

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

ok, i'll give it another shot over the bank holiday weekend, will pop in by myself and see if things change. I'll report back next week.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

i'm in two minds about this pub.. i can see what the fuss is about but at the same time there are things which piss me off about it to.
1) I'm a proper drinker.. and I wear a suit, does that mean I should be stared at like a fcuk wit by customers and staff alike?
2) If my mates aren't proper drinkers but I take them to the pub based on all of the good reviews on here (and it being potentially my new local) and they get stared at for drinking lager not ale.. is that a good thing?
3) If its as busy as it looked when I was in there on a random Wednesday evening then ffs put some money together (get the locals to have a whip round for crying out loud!) and sort out both the floor near the entrance and the toilets. I've been in some shitty toilets in pubs across london but to be frank, theres simply no excuse anymore, refurb them and the fancy electronics will keep them clean for you.

4) Should i go back to this pub? I popped in the Royal Star on the way back from work the other day and got a pretty warm reception from the local Hammer fans (suprisingly!) and the barmaid, its got the potential for me to spend alot time in there instead.. maybe I should?

The Angel, Old Street

try the ham and cheese toasties, winner.

The Masque Haunt, Old Street

food is consistently crap (when compared with Cross Quays for example).

rest of it is ok, smells a bit but most WS do, staff are cheery though and its always a good sign when they drink in their own bar.

The Tabernacle Bar & Grill, Old Street

its shut? was supposed to reopen on the 7th of june.. ?

The Moon Under Water, Balham

Few points are reading the other comments:

1) Its not "just like other 'Spoons", compare this to Wimbledon or Cross Quays?
2) It smells of piss, they must swap carpets once a year with the one in tooting broadway
3) its always got some nutcase outside who I have to swerve to avoid on my way to any other pub in balham
4) yes its cheap but i'm not going to tolerate everything else
5) its usually a tip, yes served quickly but i image the staff dont want to go anywhere near the customers or their "mess".

it needs a refurb and some door staff.

B@1 (Be At One), Balham

hasn't had a review in a while, been in there twice in the last month or so, friendly barstaff (i know they're supposed to be but were actually genuine). Always quick to serve, decent cocktails (some other punter seemed unimpressed but didn't say why?!). I generally dont bump into the rugby boys, maybe thats because they're at home in bed peeing at 9pm while i'm about to head out?

do you know what? they spoons should've bought the old jack beards (now pound shop) and turned that into a spoons like the one in wimbledon. They'd have made a mint.

instead this turns out to be the worst end of the spoons group along with the one in balham, i often forget they even exist.

A Bar 2 Far, Tooting Broadway

went there the other week with a mate on a friday or saturday night and the bouncers wouldn't let us in despite the place being pretty dead at 10ish. Why? Because my mate wasn't wearing shoes. He was wearing black trainers though which most bouncers overlook. We didn't look scally and i usually spend quite a bit on a night out so i felt b2f had shot itself in the foot a bit (no pun intended). I did get the impression though that if he had gone home, changed and come back that they would've found another reason to not let him in.

Dunno, just sometimes a bit of common sense wouldn't go a miss.

The Clarence, Balham

yeah I dont mind elaborating - albeit quite a bit later and I doubt the guy works there anymore.

I went to the bar and stood waiting (i'm 6'3 and your bar is relatively small so its not hard to notice me) and basically one of your male barstaff served only women. Time and time again, it was fairly busy, but everytime a pretty looking woman would come to the bar he would serve them next.

I let this go on for about 5 customers (I was on the left side and so wasn't being picked up by the staff on the right). Until I'd had enough and asked him politely if he could serve me next. To which basically he took some smug attitude and said I wasn't as pretty as the other customers he was serving.

I didn't lamp him but i should've. To be fair, my mate lives a stones throw from your pub and i've been back since with no issues but it only takes a single experience like that to turn customers away.

The Regent, Balham

haha @ the review below, to be fair, you couldn't be more right.

Its a far cry from the old days.

The Barley Mow, Southsea

Has something drastically changed? I used to go to this pub back in 2003 and it was a run down sh1t hole?! The sign on the front of the pub had letters missing, it was dirty, carpet was a state and it smelt of smoke (ok, so it was pre-ban). Pool table was free one night a week but all the balls ran to one side of the table.. cramped too. The lager was flat and the staff couldn't raise a smile - maybe because we were students not locals.

Maybe its all changed but i'm skeptical, if you want a better boozer nearby try the Eldon Arms.

The Lounge, Spanish Tapas Bar, Balham

I liked the old lounge and i like the new lounge more. The food is simply gorgeous and great value for money. Calamari was simply but devine. Keep up the good work!

The Rose and Crown, Tooting Bec

I like this pub. Its a locals pub and its got locals inside. If that puts you off then.. well.. good.
Plus points:
+ Great if you like lager, more so if you like Stella, they serve one of the best pints in south london.
+ Love the jukeboxes, nice pooltable, weird poker arcade machine from the 1890's.
+ Big screen.
+ Great Staff, I rarely wait long for my stella and the Landlord and Landlady bring around sandwiches. The Polish girls are really friendly and Caroline is gorgeous ;O)

Only bad point is that some of the clients have terrible language, even to offend me! lol

The Bec Bar, Tooting Bec

can't make my mind up about the place.. i think i like it but i can't work out why. Its absurdly average in every sense and offers nothing to attract me other than being on the way home from the station. Not sure what its lacking, maybe a strong cocktail list but everything here is o-k.

4 Aug 2008 16:04

The Smoke Bar And Diner, Tooting

umm, if you have so many spirits behind the bar.. why not put together a decent cocktail list which your staff can make?

The City Tup, Bank

Thanks for the compliments, I worked behind the bar here for a few years (during the complimentary posts) and it was a great pub. Mikey and I used to serve faster than any other staff ive ever met, its a small bar but i dont think anyone ever really waited longer than 2minutes for a drink even during crazy-busy lunchtimes. Hats off to the chef Mia too who was amazing and served up great chicken and leek pies or her infamous lasagne. The ole place had character and many nights where people could relax after work with tables perfect for small groups and never any trouble. Was a pleasure to work there, alas its been knocked down. RIP the city tup (aka the shitty tip :))
