The Magnesia Bank, North Shields
I heard that things had changed so I called into the pub at the weekend. What a difference, new mangement, new staff (and some old hands have returned), better food and top music. Decor still needs a bit of sprucing up, but at least the place is cleaner.
Great atmosphere over the weekend, good to see familiar faces returning and the place being busy.
Hope this management team keeps up the effort.
FANTASTIC

I used to visit this pub every time I was in the area, I've been away a for a while and I can't believe how run down it is. Years back, when it was a really busy place, it was clean and the staff were well presented and attentive. Now it looks (and smells) like a brewery managed back street boozer struggling to keep up with the bills. Can't name anything about the place that is attractive, even the msuic has gone down market and I wouldn't risk eating in the place. The big beer prices won't help attract people either.

A real treasure and well worth dropping in to relax a while.

Love this place. Its just right when out hiking in the country and you need to rest up a while.

I don't know what the fuss is all about.
Its a small family run hotel with a limited amount of space indoors but its in a great part of the Country. Hills, rivers, woods, walks and walls (Hadrian of course) and other (better) pubs are not too far away.
Its okay for an overnight stay, but its a bit pricey for anything more.
I agree that the staff/owners/managers (its hard to tell who is who) are a bit pompous (you can take the man out of the town etc).

It's certainly one of the best pubs in the area. Locals (if thats what they are) are friendly enough once the ice is broken. I got the impression that many of the 'locals' are from the local (top secret SAS) barracks, or at least are ex-service. Recomend this pub to all.

Could do with a clean up, the toilets are really crap (pardon the pun). I was in during an early evening gig, and the music crowd were having a great time, a very friendly bunch. Others who obviously were not into the music were a sad looking bunch, I can imagine what the palce is like without muisc.

Message for theshadow172004, do you really think we do not know who you are?
But you right the web site does need updating.

The staff in this typical wetherspoon could do with a kick up the backside or having their eyes tested.
Tunnel vision sufferers the lot of them. When there are more than two people waiting to be served stand next to someone who is just about to pay for their drinks and shove yourselve into the face of the staff, otherwise you are likely to be ignored.

I visited this pub in July 2008. Some of the natives are friendly though I wouldn't recomend a solo visit.
The choice of drinks is very poor, its always a bad sign when the natives drink out of tins and the bar staff have to jiggle the glass to get a head on the draft beer.

I totally agree with Kitchen - that woman is vile. Mouth like a sewer and an attitude problem the size of the national debt. The whole place could do with cleaning up, in all respects

ANON 17 DECEMBER
Why, like all the other positive reviewers of the Maggie's previous manager, are you anon?
Is it possible that you are the former manager? I know Mimosa was definately an insider. I have been using the Maggie for many years and have seen the changes in management of the pub. The pub has not won any awards or accolades since the 'daughter' took over, in fact trade seemed to be on the decline since she took over. Ellie was the manager before the 'Daugther' and under her conmtrol the pub seemed to be a fairly happy place with resonable service etc. It started going down hill when the 'Daughter' took over.
Come on all you anon's, identify yourselves either as customers or staff (both formner and current) if you want to wash your dirty linen in public do it properly. The former owner, Richard was usually open and was always a friendly frontman, obviosuly the talent wasn't passed fully down the line.
The new owner, I think she's called jackie seems pleasant enough and has decided not make any significant changes, good for her. The most obvious change has been the atmosphere in the pub, its actually more relaxed and friendly than it has been for a while.
To all the anaon's and their puit downs, Sour Grapes leave a bitter taste, its time to let sleeping dogs lie and stop the petty backstabbing.

I think this is the best boozer in town. Rough it might be and often full of drunken folk, but its still a cracking place. Get stuck in and talk to the natives, they are really quite friendly.

CHAV city... I couldn't agree more when I first called into this pub. It had more than its share of sports wear, Burberry and bling. Loud drunken badly dressed charvers do nothing to enhance a pubs image. But this is still one of the friendliest pubs in Erdington, if you ignore the chav factor. The staff are first rate and make any stranger welcome. Over the past few weeks there has been a noticable reduction in the chav factor, and there is zero tolerance for drug use (a big problem in the area) and its good to see no one (regardless of often they use the pub or how much they spend) escapes the rules. The pub is closing down soon for a major refurb and hopefully it will attract the sort of customers they deserve, one's who wear something other than tracksuits.
