If anything get yourself to their legendary quiz nights on a Monday evening. Great little boozer with a charming atmosphere.

Love this place. Set just off Unthank Road and a stonesthrow from the city it's a welcome stop-off watering hole on my way home from work. The beer garden's lovely in the sunshine and the staff are a friendly bunch.

*Warning* Do not visit this pub.
Just back from the Bird in Hand at Wreningham, where we thought we would for lunch to to see off an old colleague. Three words best describe this place:
Rude - Expensive - Disappointing.
Once we got there and a round of drinks, we took our table and got our menus. After deciding what we wanted, we sat and waited...only to be told by other patrons you need to order at the bar. Fair enough.
So we ordered our food, a bowl of olives to start. And waited. And waited. And waited.
A waitress came by and we mentioned the olives. She seemed very put out, and went off to find them. Came back, and when she did, my colleague asked if she could get a diet coke (we had a tab)
She snapped "You order at the bar. Ok?"
Somewhat shocked at this, we did as she said. And waited some more for our food.
When it finally came out - 40 minutes after ordering, the steak baguette was cold, and the duck dishes didnt warrant the 13 price tag.
Oh sorry, forgot to mention, you serve yourself cutlery too.
When we finished the barmaid wanted rid of us quickly. Kitchen shuts at 2, she exclaimed, kitchen shuts at 2! How many times did she say this to us we lost count - did they want our business or what? We ordered our food at 12:45 and it didnt come out till 1:30!
The meal itself - olives, 2 ducks, 1 steak baguette and a mushroom parcel thing came to a whopping 64.
Do not go to this place. It's a rip off staffed by people who need a lesson in proper customer service. Such a shame.

The Bell Inn, Castle Hedingham
charming little pub in a quaint little village, nice friendly service although quite quiet on a Friday afternoon. The food was absolutely delicious, although it did keep disappearing off the specials board quickly! Tomato and Lentil soup of the day with warm granary roll 3.50, kofte lamb meatballs and rice and spicy chicken and rice 9.50 each. The decor and garden could do with a bit of an upgrade but will certainly be going back soon. 9/10

Went to this pub this afternoon on the rave reviews and left bitterly bitterly disappointed - both with the drink, the food and the service. The pub was grotty inside, the clientele looked like they had just wandered in from an old people's home. An equally decrepid dog lay in the corner and the landlord sat in the corner with a face of thunder. We were hungry so thought we'd try the food, and what a mistake.
A long wait - 1 hour - we were told there were 8 people ahead of us. One 'local farmer' came in, sat down and ate immediately. 'He preorders' we were told. Ok - that's alright, we don't have anything else planned but sit in a claustrophobic corner waiting.
Food arrived - Skate (which was the only saving grace of our visit, cooked well - the chef is deserving of greater things than this pub, it was very good) but the mash was like something from school
Chilli beef with rice and salad - tasted like it had just been microwaved
Sausages, mash, blatently bisto gravy and peas from a can.
Which came to around 25 pounds. Throw in 4 glasses of wine at 2.50 a pop and very average ale, and we are talking 60 odd quid for a very disappointing way to spend a lazy afternoon in Essex. Poor showing John, you seem like a nice guy. Unfortunately we won't be back.

The Stanley Arms, Norwich
They've done the Stanley up recently - amazing what a lick of paint and a new sign will do...improved the clientele tenfold!
