The Sugar Hut Village, Brentwood
From The Sh*tter Hut website
"Sunday 13th September 2009 seems like such a long time ago now when our beloved Sugar Hut Village suffered a major fire. But the good news is that the builders are making good progress and from the ashes will rise THE No.1 clubbing experience in the south of England. "
What a shame, what a scandal. Why does this sort of business need a place like this. It's not as if its customers care where they go as long as they can indulge in whatever vile, deluded fantasy this chain sells them.
It looks like Brentwood is doomed to remain the laughing-stock, chav-magnet of the South East and wait for a generation before it recovers its one real asset, that lovely pub.

Very good beer, well-meaning but harassed service. Vile customers. Easy to find better pubs nearby.

The Slug and Lettuce, Brentwood
Former paint and wallpaper supplies shop. Has gone downhill since those days. Better off in the fish bar/carpet store next door.

Tiny inside but has a large heated terrace where you can smoke. The Happy Hour is very cheap for Paris and includes all draught beers, including the superb Belgian ones.
The terrace is often reserved by large groups in the evening when prices will deter most of those not used to the expense of drinking in France. Think 8 a pint.

French chav-magnet. This area is recommended for those who favour the Leicester Square area of London.

This used to be more of a pub than a restaurant. Since the smoking ban it has, through necessity, become more of a restaurant. Snacky, brasserie fayre. Beers are better than the standard French lagers.
Don't bother if you want to linger over a drink. When you near the door, aggressive meet and greet staff lead you to a table over which you have no choice. Like a bad Chinese restaurant or a car ferry they start filling the space from the back so you can expect to be stuck next to another full table even if the place is empty. If you don't want to eat you will be stuck at the bar.
Overall, brisk, and not in a good way.

Not a pub. Not economically feasible except during happy hour and even then you need deep pockets. It's true they serve some interesting French and Belgian beers. The food is poor and so is the service.

Infested by wasps on my visit, but the chavs at the next table made me warm to the wasps a bit and the beer was very good.
Suffers from being in a rather small town that is seeing hard times, but if you can overlook a few tattooed hardcases staking out their territory (and their boyfriends) it's a pub worth a detour.

Lovely place. I went every night for 4 days. The music and the Harveys beer were excellent.

The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
Too busy to really enjoy. A victim of its own success. There are far better places within 5 minutes walk.

The Sugar Hut Village, Brentwood
Please let someone open this up as a pub again so people can sit in the lovely courtyard in the afternoon and use it for functions. God knows what is left of it inside. I can't imagine the Sugar Hut guttersnipes have treated it even as well as the TJs crowd did.

The Railway Tavern, Chelmsford
Very nice pub with a pleasant beer garden. Beer has been excellent on all my visits. You could almost forget you were in Chelmsford.

Just horrible. Why would anyone go on holiday in Spain and seek out the closest equivalent of a city-centre Wetherspoon?. And it's a rip-off.

No smoking now. No atmosphere either.
Fortunately, there is a much better beer bar in Bruges.

The Ye Old Green Dragon, Brentwood
Once upon a time this was run by a Jim Bowen sound-alike and it is still super and smashing and lovely.
Please support this pub with its nice beer and owners.

Not a pub, a Sky Box with limited seating facilities and beer that tastes like pot noodle.

Haven't been here since they scrapped the music and started playing compilations of half time analysis.

The first reviewer was right. This is like having a lock-in at a branch of Currys. Still all those tellies keep the place nice and warm.
8 a pint of kegged Scottish "ale" or 7.50 for a French lager that reminds you why the country is famous for wine.

The Frog at Bercy Village, Paris
This has all the charm of an theme pub in an airport. The beer is absolutely foul (real ale is just not possible in Paris sadly, since the last Adnams pub shut years back). This chain does a roaring trade convincing the only too happily convinced French that English beer tastes like vinegar. The barstaff are extremely intrusive - "I see you are within 3 inches of the bottom of your glass, van I get you another. Or will it just be the bucket?"

An evening at the Crow and in a very good way. Anyone who's gone on holiday by mistake in Colchester should head here.

Must agree with drinker999.
What was once a rare survival is now another desperate attempt to part the gullible and aspirational from their money. See also South Weald's Tower Arms, Mill Green's The Cricketers, too painful to go on.

I know that is how terrace is pronounced in Brentwood, but do you need to spell it that way? I prefer the Slag n Lettis.

The Artichoke, Shenfield Common
Vile and a waste of what used to be a nice green space before the old pub went on fire.

"Comparison of the W galleried range with other inn galleries in England show it to be apparently the most complete and the most elegantly constructed of those that survive"
