unfriendly bar staff, clearly more interested in dealing with their mates than paying customers, don't go near the place

went back here for the first time in 5 years recently
had been in the past with a work crowd so was quite pissed before we got in, didn't remember it as being as bad as it was.
My experience of this place is it's passable if you go with a group and can commandeer a table at the front out by the regent st end. You can have a chat at least.
the back is shite though...

Hmm
Haven't been in the pub for years
Went once with a friend and it was the most unwelcoming environment I have been in.
Arrived in quite late (about 20 minsutes before closing) and the landlady's first reaction was to look at the clock as if to work out if she had to serve us or not).
Grudgingly she did and when I finished my pint she was pulling the glass out of my hand before I had set it down.
Given that we were not drunk (that was our first pint) nor shabbily dressed it was very unwelcoming.
Hopefully management and or their attitudes have changed since...

A lot of the reviews comment negatively on the bouncers here.
To be honest they're some of the best I've seen in London. There's a lot of them there, they stop any trouble quickly. If you're too drunk, generally, you won't be let in or you will be chucked out quickly. If you'r causing hassle, be you male or female, you will be chucked out. Occasionally the bouncer will chuck the other party out with the trouble maker but innocents are generally left back in, much depends obviously on how drunk you are
The reddy is messy, and full of antipodeans, shock horror, quel surprise. A lot of the reviews seem to be fixated on this as a negative. Well don't bloody go to an antipodean pub then!
A lot of the reviews commenting on the aggressive atmosphere etc. I don't get this. I've been going for about 5 years and never had any trouble there.
I rate the redback as great for a big night out on the beers with friends, don't go too often and never go in good shoes.
Basically the Redback does exactly what it says on the tin, it's a place to go with friends, have some beers, listen to a decent (if predictable) playlist from the usually good bands and dj's and maybe chat someone up. The talent is always good, frequently outstanding.
As another reviwer pointed out, it's not a place to go if you're not willing to let your hair down and have a laugh.
Different bars a for different purposes is my mantra.
If you with the intention of having a laugh with friends, it's a nine
If you go with the intention of standing in the corner, and complaining how unruly, unwinebar and unreserved the atmosphere is, you'd rate it a 3 but you're the bigger eejit for having gone there to begin with
Essex boys need not apply.
