Great spot. Followed up recommendations from this site and the GBG 2007 and decided to meet a friend here when I was visiting Leeds for work in April 2007. Sat in the public bar. A great selection of ales on tap. I tried four of them, including a nice porter called 'Ace of Spades' from the Ossett Brewery near Wakefield. Had a very amusing conversation with a very 'jolly' bloke who explained to me how the bumble bee was the answer to the malaria pandemic in sub-Saharan African...powerful stuff. Tasty pork scratchings.

What a great place. I love coming here when I'm down our beach hut for a few pints of Hophead or Sunburst. A fascinating mix of locals.

Terrible place. Have tried it to give it a chance on a couple of occasions over the last few years - mainly because it is an easy stop-off on my way to the County Ground. Drinks are ok, but the bar staff must be the worst in B&H. They're more interested in chatting to their mates. I have never waited so long for two drinks when no one else is being served. If you really want a proper pub, we've got plenty in B&H e.g. the Bugle, the Neptune, the Lion and Lobster, the Basketmakers, the Prestonville Arms...

wonderful community pub. Been going here for almost 12 years. Best pint of Guinness in town and the place to watch rugby union. Come on the Ospreys!

Nice and handy little pub. Has become the traditional meeting point for my mate and I before we head-off to watch Wales vs. France in the Six Nations elsewhere...perhaps we should watch it in here once! Nice pint of Tim Taylor. Friendly staff. A great location which appears to somehow remain a little bit out-of-the way for your average punter.

I love(d) this place. Been going there for 10 years. The sort of pub that makes you proud to be a Brightonian. Nice atmosphere, superb Harvey's and a great landlord. I would also normally add the food to this list, but unfortunately I had a rather unpleasant experience there last Saturday. After choosing the haddock kedgeree from the The Nelson's specials board I sat sipping my pint with great anticipation. It looked great on arrival and the first few mouthfuls tasted wonderful. Unfortunately I was immediately put-off by the three long reddish-brown hairs mixed into the kedgeree. Really not what you want! These hairs matched perfectly with the hard working lady who delivered the food from the kitchen. Yuck! If she was also cooking the food then where was her hair net!? Needless to say, I will not be eating in the Nelson for a long while. I may also be offering them a little less of my business in the future. There are plenty of other decent pubs serving good unpretentious grub in Brighton & Hove.

The Kings Head, Lewes
So, the solution to a failing local is once again to 'gastro' it. Great. Harvey's Sussex Best and Hepworth Prospect were on good form when I visited at the end of November before a trip to The Pan. A little pricey, but hardly a surprise. Food looked ok. Sadly the place felt soulless. Typical gastropub interior. It was, however, quite busy - clearly the DFLs like it, which is fair enough. I won't be returning though. A shame to scratch it off my pre-match list. At least the likes of the Gardener's, Elly, Brewer's etc. continue to thrive as proper pubs. Well done to them for getting the formula right. If you want a food-orientated pub, head over to the Snow Drop.
