The Swan on the Green, West Peckham

All very pleasant surroundings both inside and on the village green. Own brew ales - tried the Trumpeter fine. Good food - I had the mixed ploughmans - good ham and 3 tasty cheeses. The only downside is you pay for quality food 10.50 for the ploughmans which wasn't a huge portion, just tasty. Beer prices reasonable though - 2.70 for the trumpeter. Recommended

The Nightingale, Balham

Youngs pub that fortunately has been left untouched. Fine pint in convivial atmosphere. Had several before having a curry next door.

The Leather Bottle, Earlsfield

This is no longer a pub but an overprices Youngs eaterie. Most of the space is devoted to serving food to parrallel lines of tables in the garden. The Youngs was far too cold so we sat in the sun at the front away from the clatter of cutlery although odd tables there. Did not have the food but similar (overpriced) menu to the Pied Bull

The Pied Bull, Streatham

Have been on 2 lunchtimes recently. The Youngs is well kept but at times the serving staff seemed to have gone awol. Pleasant and airy with screens in the rear room and a pleasant patio area. Made the mistake of ordering food on the first occassion - I had lamb burger which was ok and just served with chips which filled the plate but just one layer deep - not at all generous for 7. My mate had steak and ale pie which was quiet small with thickish pastry served with a round of mash potato (no additional gravy) and another round of rounds of carrot and a broccolus floret (my mate tells me that this is the singular of broccoli florets).
Good pint but keep clear of the food and most Youngs pubs seem to have a similar menu

The Elephant and Castle, Newtown

This is a hotel with many rooms including some bothy rooms at the rear so the impersonal hotel style bar doesn't surprise. But on a warm evening sit outside below or on the river floodbank and enjoy a decent pint from the Montgommery brewery.
Good luck to Stu in his search for mild. In our stay we didn't find a brown coloured pint let alone a dark one. Golden ales are everywhere in this part of Wales so unless drinking from a national brewers pub (e.g. Banks at the Buck) expect the lighter flavoured golden pints.

The Bell Hotel, Newtown

Called in last Sunday and found it to be the only place in town that was busy. The reason though was that the landlady was leaving and saying farewell. New owner now in charge so what it will be like on a normal day no idea. Will probably lose its GBG listing though.

The Talbot Inn, Welshpool

Definitely open for the youthful clientel. No ale

16 Jun 2009 16:21

The Pheasant Inn, Welshpool

As a stranger I didn't find it at all unwelcolming. Serves Monts ales which seem common in these parts although all seem golden ales. Pool table and karaoke to amuse the younger set

16 Jun 2009 16:19

The Mermaid, Welshpool

Looks permanently closed

16 Jun 2009 16:17

The Crown, Stony Stratford

Went there for the mmusic festivsal with a Pink Floyd tribute band playing upstairs. Reasonable pint of Doombar. Didn't see much of the pub otherwise

16 Jun 2009 15:54

The Angel, Welshpool

long thin pub with several bar sections where you cannot see any bar staff (nor they you) and long wait for pub fare food. Not great but only Talbot looked better but no food on bank holiday lunchtime

The Red Lion, Caersws

Choice between Holden and Brakspear when we called. A, typical village local with 2 rooms but everyone in the one decorated with beer mats. Lots of friendly English vs Welsh banter and Juke box played plenty of rock music

Red Lion Hotel, Llanidloes

Were staying here and probably fortunate to have a room on the top floor so not disturbed by 2am bar noise.
Drank Taylors Landlord throughout weekend stay as I wasn't keen on the Holden or Ruddles alternatives.
Two bars one with large red leather sofas gets packed quickly but space usually available in other bar with pool table. This, like other local pubs is on the youngsters weekend pub crawl circuit so can fill up and empty quite quickly. I arrived early one evening to find lounge bar packed so went into other bar, by the time my friends arrived it had emptied and as a result they thought I had moved elsewhere!!
Found evening menu a bit mixed and not a match for the excellent breakfasts.
This appears to be the only pub in town that serves food on a Sunday evening

Other pubs visited in Llanidloes (I've given up trying to get new pubs listed)
Crown & Anchor: see entry
Mount: no ale despite Worthington and Bass handpumps. Scary reverend and his blues band played whilst we propped up a Formica table
Kings Head: were looking for food Sunday evening so didnt stop, looked ok though
Elephant: served Brains but pint a bit off. Decor very dark green and wood Karaoke til 2am or later
Queens Head: no ale didnt stay
Angel: friendly locals bar away from the youngsters pub crawl circuit. Good pint of Everards Tiger plus also Thwaites and Greene King. Pub has two rooms, again mostly only one used with route to loos splitting the bar in two. Recommended

Crown and Anchor Inn, Llanidloes

Lots of small rooms eventually leading to bar, supposedly unchanged for 44 years. Good pint of Brains and also served Worthington. Worth a visit

The King William, Bath

We were looking for a meal in the area on easter saturday not too far from where we were staying otherwise would probably not entered as obviously a gastro pub but completely different atmosphere than the Garricks Head.
Otter ale was good but the food menu a bit odd. If you are hungary you will need a proper main at about 15. Other items although not listed as starters cost 8 for a duck leg (my choice). Tasty, more than a starter but could do with some chips for the price

The Old Crown, Bath

Found this when walking the cotswold way. Needed lunch and were just short of finishing in Bath. The path passes the Kings Head but no ale there. Continued up to church then drops briefly where divert around the corner.
The Greene King ales were well kept but had a limited choice of two and chose Abbot, the mild had just finish and no sign of IPA. The sunday lunch was fine eaten on the patio and there was a small play area for kids

18 Apr 2009 20:22

The William IV, Kensal Green

Large open space for service counter but several comfortable sofas at rear, wood floor, expensive 3.10 pint although kept well Fullers & Cottage when we called, not tempted by 12+ roast lunch

21 Feb 2009 18:45

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Small historic and atmospheric wood panelled pub with additional seating and food counter upstairs. Only 2 ales on when we arrived including Harveys, but all 4 pumps on when we left - we obviously weren't drinking fast enough!!

21 Feb 2009 18:43

The Jolly Farmers, Purley

Agree with most of the comments below - not a great pub but where else could you drink in Purley?

4 Feb 2009 15:04

The Good Companions, Warlingham

On my last few visits am lucky if there is anything other than Courage Best on offer. Not the pub it was

4 Feb 2009 14:52

The Gatehouse, Highgate

Better than norm Weatherspoon but although the Mordue was fine the Spitfire was poor.

4 Feb 2009 14:44

The Flask, Highgate

Lots of dark painted/wood panelled rooms which hide what is basically an old eaterie with not particularly good food. A guest beer Polar Beer was available but uninspiring and the Fullers was aa bit cold and slightly cloudy.

4 Feb 2009 14:38

Spaniards Inn, Hampstead Heath

Hasn't cjanged much from my last visit 5 years ago - great location, decent pint (Adnams), food poor and expensive (didn't make that mistake this time), and same crap service

4 Feb 2009 14:31

The Old Bull and Bush, North Hampstead

Came for the history - 'The old bull & bush' - but now a modern gastro pub with bright lighting. Plenty of totty though and a good pint of Taylors Landlord

4 Feb 2009 14:23

The Holly Bush, Hampstead

Our favourite pub in Hampstead. Good Harveys beer and historic front bar and lots of rooms, lively atmosphere and clientele

4 Feb 2009 11:55

The Duke of Hamilton, Hampstead

Good community local with reasonable prices. Had Doombar, Fullers London Pride and Chiswick available

4 Feb 2009 11:46

Ye Olde White Bear, Hampstead

I notice the complaints about overpriced food but the beer isn't cheap either. No other complaints though as good choice of well kept ales. Lively and warm.

4 Feb 2009 11:40

The Flask, Hampstead

Well known Youngs pub in alleyway, best seen from the outside. As you move further to the back to find a seat you will find the the decor becomes drab
