The Strathmore Arms, St Pauls Walden
Went there this evening and were really impressed with the beer there. Seems like a little gem tucked away waiting to be sought out. The landlord was really friendly and very welcoming. Also it looked like some of the nights planned for different food events including a "wild food " tasting night could be a cracking different night out. Bit of a trek but worth every mile. Get a vehicle designate a pilot and get out there , you will be really pleased. Any chance of a late night bus route to somewhere with a train ?????

Same as reviewer beneath . Took ages to get served a crappy pint by a nobber. Then just a min afer the bell rang the pikey female manager waddled over and said its time to go. She really is someone who should do a different job. A useless corperate manager that know nothing about customer service and has just ruined pubs in the Uk. Was in the other eve as someone said there was some accoustic music and it was actually ok. An ok if young crowd friendly and happy. Was sad to see the horrible manager still employed.

Great historic pub with good vibe. Now has a "real" real ale on one tap at least. Music on Sunday and Tuesday. (very busy Sunday afternoon ) Staff are all really nice . (except one power crazy loon) !! "J" you are just a barman mate chill out ! Sometimes has an impromtu cheese club on a Wednesday. All in all how a Market Place pub should run , a couple ofdowners... The Gents toilet is a disgrace and need refurbing bad. is it legal? It is a bit grubby generally . Used to do a great roast could be an idea. Poss best Pub in St A

This pub used to be fab. It used to have that real pub and great gastro balence oozing charm and quality. I went a week ago and it was shite. At lunch time we got a dirty stained menu and a terrible glass of warm white wine. The chavvy waitress was surly and not welcoming at all. The food was bloody dear and although the steak was a good bit of meat cooked ok it didnt warrant London prices. Used to be served by a fab Czech girl who we loved and had real food, good beer. Found out the lady who sorted it has gone. Avoid its now just a rip off riding on its old rep. Sorry to be harsh but 100 for lunch for 3 in a pub in Batford with terrible wine and ok food is piss take.

The best selection of real ales in St Albans and priced very reasonably. Nothing like the Lwr Red in the winter with real fire in a proper pub. Its not always perfect in every respect but thats in many ways its charm. Its a real pub warts and all and alot of the complaints here are from people who seem to have some beef with the landlord. Unfriendly staff ??....were you friendly ? and the person who says they have been in 10 times in 2yrs and there was different staff? thats less than one visit every two months .. what do you expect them waiting for YOU?.

The Lower Red Lion, St Albans
The Lower Red Lion used to be THE real ale pub in St Albans but went through a slightly tricky period which has now thankfully passed. The pub is now looking spruce and the great range of ales are in tip top nick. We had been travelling some way out of town for a roastie on a Sunday as finding one in St A which was in a place which wasnt either over priced or packed out was a nightmare. Look no further the roast dinner in the Lwr Red is up there with the very best in the area. Well presented and very reasonable. With the spring thinking about spinging and the garden looking in great shape lets hope a great mixture of folk come and enjoy this pearl of tradition public houses in St Albans.
