The White Rose, Acomb

I lived no more than a five minute walk from the Rose until I was over 30, so if I wasn't in here I was in the Beagle, and yet I somehow managed to lived to tell the tale. My dad was a regular since the time when quite literally the paint was still drying on the lounge walls. Even during mid 90s "clean" epoch had more than it's fair share of characters and atmosphere.'

Even rock hard regulars still talked about the mayhem of the 70s saturday night discos with a sense of awe.

The Roman Bath, York

Beer - average.

Underground archaeology - top class.

Recommended for - proximity to taxi rank/curry house come going home time.

The Three Cranes Inn, York

Back room was once a favoured oasis of calm on the Saturday night treadmill.

The Hansom Cab, York

Was once famous for unspeakably vile Sam's, and close proximity to The Tiger, York's (then) top trouble pub averaging sveral plod visits every night on a weekend IIRC.

The Windmill, York

Mid 90s was briefly renamed after some Beautiful South album or other.

The Kings Arms, York

Tourist/student trap with above average pint of Sam's, which doesn't exactly scream "drink here" from the rooftops.

Famous for regular Ouse-inspired redecorating. I once knew a bloke who claimed to know the then landlord who said that during one flood he waded into the bar and caught a pike snacking on the crisps behind the bar. I really wish I was making that up.

Oscars Wine Bar, York

Is Oscars still trendy? Bejesus, I sudenly feel rather old. Me and my mate Paul used to go there an awful lot in the mid 80s, and put the world to rights over several pitchers of something that tasted to much like Blue Nun.

The Snickleway Inn, York

In real life this pub always was and always will be known as The Anglers Arms. Letters are still delivered here addressed to the Anglers.

The word "snickleway" does not exist in York dialect. The nearest you can get in York dialect is "snicket". The name change from "Anglers" came at the same time as a book called "The Snickleways of York" was popular.

Despite the name change cash-in the Anglers never compromised the quality of the ale, it was famous as keeping one of York's best pint of John's.

The Ackhorne, York

A proper pub, just a stone's throw away from the Micklegate madness. The Ackhorne will always be special for me and the missus because we met here (1996), and for our first six months together it was our local during the era of the legendary Tony as landlord.
