Visited the Salutation this week on my annual pilgrimage to Cornwall and found it the same as ever. Food was good and reasonably priced. Doom Bar is still the only real ale on offer - no problem for me as I enjoy it - but just for a change a tried a pint of Sharps Cornish cider, and very nice it was too. The best pub in Looe in my opinion - ticks all the boxes for beer, food and atmosphere.

Speaking as neither landlord nor friend of the landlord, I must say the Harbour Moon has improved noticeably since my last visit here about a year ago. It's been repainted terracotta colour externally - doesn't look too bad - and is in the process of an internal refurbishment as well with tiles just about to be laid according to the barman. The old curved bench seating has gone - I wasn't entirely sure about the high tables and stools running through the centre of the room but it does make for more space. The beer was fine and the barman polite and helpful. Noticed a little shot glass by the pumps so assume you can have a free taster if unsure what to go for. I personally wouldn't use the pub in the evening as Karaoke is a big thing there most nights and I don't enjoy Karaoke, but for a drink during the day, especially when the tide's in, it's a pleasant enough place to while some time away.

The recent review is pretty much what I found the other day. The Crown seems to have a real public bar mentality to it - nothing wrong with that in principle, but what you have here isn't particularly inviting. Some very loud-mouthed (and foul-mouthed) conversations going on with the bar staff fully involved - so involved that they weren't especially interested in breaking off to serve other people. Very much a select group of regulars dominating the show and non-regulars don't get much of a welcome. Not much evidence of anyone eating when I was there, which I can easily understand. The beer was fine in fairness but I don't see myself going here again - not an enjoyable experience at all.

The Jolly Sailor, Saltford
TheFoodDevourer is correct - the Jolly has been slipping away in recent times, and not just the food. They do of course attract a huge amount of trade when we have good weather, mainly due to their superb location, and I suspect they've become a little complacent as a result. In all honesty the Bird in Hand beats all the other Saltford pubs into a cocked hat whether you're talking food or beer, which is why I tend to use it pretty much exclusively these days.
