The Inn on the Green, Hanwell

Now called the Inn on the Green.

Still good. The beer choice is excelletn with a range of local breweries represented. Staff firendly and, all-in-all, an excellent place to while away an hour or three.

The Plough Inn, Hundon

The beer choice was not wildly exciting but the Adnams was kept in good condition. Staff polite and friendly. The view from the back garden is rather lovely. I think this might be a slow burner: I quite liked it initially and liked enough to suspect I'll be back to see if it grows on me.

Popeye, Tokyo

Well, back again after a year or two and I'm pleased to be able to say that it is as good as ever. I took several Tokyo colleagues there last night and they loved it. Good beers, a new brewery or two and a particulrly fine choice of dark ales. The Isekadoya Pale Ale lives on and the Shinto Strong Ale is rather fine. King of all it surveys, though, is the Hakusekikan Kristal, More sherry overtones than before but rather wonderful and unique. If you are a CAMRA member, show your card to entertain the staff. There's no discount but you get some admiring glances.

The Sportsman, Amberley

A friendly pub with a nice suntrap terrace outback with a lovely view over the marshes/water meadows. A good range of local beers and, although, we only tried the one, it was in good condition.

Ryans, Hanwell

Ryan's reopened almost immediately. There is a new set of people cooking pretty decent Thai food but lower division football seems to have gone. The wine selection seems to have got worse so it will be interesting to see where this place heads.

Disaster strikes for lovers of Thai food and lower division football: Ryan's has closed with the last night being the 9th of January 2010.

To be fair, it is important to update reviews. The beer is still excellent, always in good nick. The food never disappoints and the camembert is back: rejoice! I hear from informed sources that there will also be another wine by the glass soon so feedback is acted upon. This is a genuine gem: go here and enjoy!

A nice little pub. Although it looks nothing special from the outside, they keep a nice range of bitters, mainly from local breweries and the staff are pleasant. If you are in the area, well worth a visit.

No longer bright yellow as in the picture on this website. We went in a year or two ago and were disappointed but went back recently and very much like the place now. The food is pretty decent Thai stuff but the wine choice is very good. Beer choice much less exciting though. The quiz is entertaining, the staff pleasant and if you are nice to them they may even show lower division football.

The White Horse, Edwardstone

There is really not a lot to dislike in this pub. A good range of local bitters (including their own), interesting ciders, good soft drinks, pleasant food in a decent yard and garden. Environmentally-friendly, with its own brewery? Go there! Try and find something wrong with it: I dare you!

Still impressed with the place. Almost always has two Adnams beers on, one from the local Nethergate brewery and a.n.other.. The beer is well-kept and the food is excellent. The only gripes: wine by the glass could be more imaginative: it is fine but not wildly exciting. The second gripe is more serious: Simon must bring back the baked camembert!

The Crown, Hartest

Went recently for lunch. Admittedly it is a Green King pub but they appear to keep their beer well. Huge portions of good food for lunch from the fishfinger sandwich to much grander fare. Quite beautiful as well so would highly recommend it.

The Bell Hotel, Clare

Nice wine, friendly staff and a quiz machine. Not too shabby at all.

The Fox, Hanwell

A lovely pub with excellent food and generally well-kept beer. Come and have a pint and play "beermat" with Luke the dog (reviewed below).

The Swan Inn, Clare

Surprisingly nice despite being a Greene King pub. Friendly service and decent pub grub if nothing too special. The beer seems to be kept fairly well too.

The Bull Hotel, Long Melford

An interesting place. Feels like somewhere to take the parents-in-law. A Greene King pub but don't despair, they are friendly and they do serve a guest ale (Bath's Gem at our last visit).

Rather nice actually. Good Adnams and a pleasant pint of Nethergate both times I have been there. The food is also very good indeed, chips and more creative stuff. Give it a go...

Popeye, Tokyo

Been back recently. Beer was great and the staff were really friendly. Everyone I went with had a good time as well. Although there are funkier bars in Tokyo, there is something charming about having two beers too many and then being given a guard of honour out at the old hours of 11pm, after time is called in Japanese. For anyone particularly into their beer, they can even crawl around the corner to the brewpub at JR Ryogoku station. Essential.

The Viaduct, Hanwell

Has now reopened. It has all been done quite nicely without going over the top so what you have is a nice pub with a more traditional standing bar at the East end and carpets and seating at the other. Even the toilets have been renovated! Wine list not bad, beers kept in good condition when we went in and they seem to be trying some things with the food (fairly simple stuff but a weekly menu as well). Wish this place well, it deserves it!
