Well, back again after a year or two and I'm pleased to be able to say that it is as good as ever. I took several Tokyo colleagues there last night and they loved it. Good beers, a new brewery or two and a particulrly fine choice of dark ales. The Isekadoya Pale Ale lives on and the Shinto Strong Ale is rather fine. King of all it surveys, though, is the Hakusekikan Kristal, More sherry overtones than before but rather wonderful and unique. If you are a CAMRA member, show your card to entertain the staff. There's no discount but you get some admiring glances. jollid - 10 Jun 2011 11:53 |
Been back recently. Beer was great and the staff were really friendly. Everyone I went with had a good time as well. Although there are funkier bars in Tokyo, there is something charming about having two beers too many and then being given a guard of honour out at the old hours of 11pm, after time is called in Japanese. For anyone particularly into their beer, they can even crawl around the corner to the brewpub at JR Ryogoku station. Essential. jollid - 9 Feb 2006 23:48 |
I'm not sure how useful a review of a pub in Tokyo is but if you're going there read on. Hidden away in Ryogoku near the underground station, this pub is excellent. Serves a few UK and American beers but also has a fantastic selection of Japanese microbrewery beers (try the Isekadoya IPA if it is on). Really very good indeed and very, very friendly staff, although with limited English. I am assured that the price of a fiver a pint is quite reasonable by Tokyo standards. p.s. don't try walking there from Asakusa, it is Asukasabashi station you want-save yourself an hour's walking.
