Bird in Hand, Reading

We were out walking in the area a couple of weeks ago and fully expected the place to still be boarded up. Very pleased to find it open, serving well kept real ale (Loddon & West Berks), and advertizing an impending beer festival with a ska theme. What more could you want? Very happy, and staff lovely. Haven't eaten here yet so can't comment on the food.

The Alehouse, Reading

Can't say we've ever had any issues with hostility or being served. Beer is good 9 times out of 10, but does occasionally have an off day/off beer, but with 8 on the go at once that's not bad going.

The Rising Sun, Reading

Sadly closed again & up for rent. It's a shame as following the refit after a lengthy closure it was turning out to be a good town centre pub with good beer.

The Old London Apprentice, Newbury

This isn't closed!

The Star, Caversham

Two Bridges ale is served here, usually a choice of two, and is very good. People have started visiting the Star just for this beer alone. Quiet, which is a shame, as it isn't the place its former reputation suggests, and the staff are friendly. This pub deserves a chance.

The Sun in the Wood, Newbury

Good food & well kept ales. Friendly staff. This is something of a destination pub as is on a small windy road between Shaw & Cold Ash, but a good place to walk to. Probably not somewhere to go if you just want a drink, but there is a nice beer garden in the summer. Food is more gastro dining than pub grub so good for a celebration meal.

The Pot Kiln, Frilsham

This place is one of my favourite places to eat for special occasions. I've always found the staff extremely friendly and knowledgable.
If your aim is simply to go for a drink and not to eat, then don't come here as your opinion will be marred. This is primarily a (pricey) restaurant now owned by a tv chef, with good beer and wine to accompany your meal.
It used to be a bit of a ramblers pub as is in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, but used to be the original location for West Berks brewery until they got too big & had to move to larger premises. Bit of a shame, but I don't think it would have survived as just a pub, but the food more than makes up for it.

Nags Head, Reading

Absolutely love this pub. This is how pubs should be - friendly, great beer. Just we lived nearer than the 30 minute fast walk away, although our livers would probably disagree.

The Moderation, Reading

This is (now) a great, friendly little pub. Whatever horrors it used to house, which was before I lived in Reading seem to be long gone. Yes it has the leather sofa trappings of a wine bar, but only a couple of them, and it happens to have really well kept beer, better than many in Reading, and is a great place for us to take non-ale-drinking friends where we can all be happy.
Only reason I haven't given it a 10 was because we haven't managed to eat here yet, but the food looks great. Must be good as both times we have tried to eat here there haven't been any tables.
