Visited this fantastic on Tuesday for a few pre match drinks.
Very friendly bar staff and regulars, who made my group very welcome.
Excellent selectionof cask beers and goodconversation. What more you want from a proper pub?

I used to love this pub. When Nick was running the bar, always an excellent choice of real ale and well kept.
Since hes left and the new bar manager has come in, oh dear. Has no idea how to look after the beer, more beers off than on, including onethat tasted like vinegar last night.

The only saving grace of this pub is the lovely Claire.

Visited yesterday evening before heading to the station.
Tiny pub, but the interior is supurb and well worth popping in to see how pubs once looked like. Had a couple of well kept butcombe gold, thoguh they did have a couple of other local ales to choose from.

Visited for the first time yesterday, before going to the football at Ashton Gate. Very pleasant pub, with an excellent location. One can imagine sitting outside on the raised terrace watching the world pass way on the waterway.
Staff are very friendly and efficient and the butcombe, gem and tribute were all in excellent menu. The food looked very nice, will return on my next visit to Bristo.

The Robin Hood's Retreat, Bishopston
I used to love this pub, but its beer range has seemed to have gone backwards. When living in Bristol, always had a good range of beer on its 8 handpumps, with a good and interesting range of styles and flavors trom micro breweies to entice you with. Went in on Monday, only four ales on, one which turned to be the end of the barrell, and two was the cringeworth Green King IPa (crap beer) and Doombar (common a s muck and not exciting).
This pub can do so much better, but this visit only a 2 score from me.

In on Monday night just gone, pretty lively, but fairly quick service. Disapointing to see one ale on with two off, but at least it was in good condition. Has a studently feel to it, and a good heating outside for the smokers.

The Cotham Porter Stores, Cotham
Revisited the pub on Monday as it was an old favorite of mine from my time in Bristol. The cider was in good knick, but what are they doing with the refurbishment? Its far to bright. Much preferred it when it was rougher round the edges, which gave the pub its character and atmosphere, now it looks like a clone pub. At least the toilets are still outside.

Good range of beer, but bottle prices are outrageous, compared to what other pups of il are selling them for. Cask beer well kept.
Always find this place has a strange atmosphere as its not sure what its trying to be, a food led place or beer heaven for geeks.

Have to love their beer festival list claiming some of the bers are exclusive to wetherspoons when I have drunk them in other london pubs over a month ago, such as Bath Ales Ginger Hare.

Looking forward to the SW Beer Festival at The Rake. Starts on the 31st October and have seen the beer list, and it has some very small brewers coming upto London for the first time. Should be good.

Poppedin today for their beer festival. Very nice atmosphere with a good range of cask ales available. My pick was the Saltaire triple Chocoholic.

Nice to see the rake promoting a good local brewery last night in the form of The Kernel Brewery. Two casks and three keg versions of the beer, as well as the bottled range. Had a chance to talk about the beer swith the brewer Evin as well.

3.35 a pint of Landlord? Are they barking mad in here, especially as The george canning does it for 3.10 a pint?

Excellent Brewdog tasting last night, including the end of history

Went in last Sunday on a kingsdown pub crawl. Very friendly welcome from the relief manager, who dealt with the big order of 10 gems and 10 laphroigs very well. Gem in good form.
Bit on na quiet side for a sunday evening of a bank holiday weekend, but enabled us to have good banter with the aforementioned releif manager.
Will be in again soon.

back down in Bristol for the bank holiday weekend and went on a pub crawl of thearea in a group of ten.
glad to say the Highbury Vaults is as good as ever, very friendly and efficient service, even though the pub was packed on Sunday evening from the side effects of teh Party On The Hill.
Was very surpised and happy to report that on the asking of ten pints, the barman suggested giving us a couple of jugs. Top work sir.

The Cotham Porter Stores, Cotham
Was a big favorite of mine when I lived in Bristol, but down for the bank holiday weekend with some friends for a pub crawl round the area. I can safely say I will never return to this pub again as the b loke who appeared to be the manager was rude and saw us as an inconvenience to a private party he seemed to be having with friends.
He has just lost 10 customers, 8 who happen to live within a two minute walk of the pub as well

The White Lion, Westbury on Trym
First time back in bristol for a couple of months and against my better judgement met some friends in here before heading to Glouster Road. See the arrogant bald manager not dealing with drug users in the toilets, bad service, poorly kept beer, poorly trained staff.
Do not visit.

went in monday evening at 9pm to meet my partner. Pleasant enough service, but a bit disturbing when they start putting chairs on tables at 10pm. Doesn't encourage you to stay

Pleasant enough pub, though the couple of times I have been in it has been fairly quiet. Pretty sure when busy it would have a decent atmosphere.
well kept tim taylors landlord kept my partner happy and I went of the sierra nevada, a bit on the cold side but pleasant enough.

The nearest pub to where I live, and a typical wetherspoons. Mixture of chavs and idiots. In last night, with some loudmouths swearing with no action takne by management.
Standard range of beers for wetherspoons, with none being in outstanding conditions. Will not be made my local.

Very strange post the last one. I have been in on serveral evenings including last wednesday and I got a beer at 10.50pm.
maybe Mr wade is getting confused with the outside area closing at 10>20pm, which I understand is part of their liscence.

This is becoming a firm favorite of mine and my partners when we are up in Lodon, my partner is in beer heaven. Always have an interesting of cask ales and a supurb range of belgian beers for him and I am into my fruit beers agt the moment. Timmermans strawberry on draught was lovely.
Friendly staff, who are knowledgeable and a good mix of customers.

The Alleyns Head, West Dulwich
Don't eat in here full stop, unless you like boil in the bag curry and microwaved food. Service is slow.

The Cotham Porter Stores, Cotham
Was in last night for the first time in ages, and as always the pub was on top form. Excellent range of proper cider, with my pick being the cheddar valley. Fantastic atmosphere, friendly, top juke box, what more can you want for a pub.
The pub is well worth a visit if you like real cider, or how pubs should be.

Fantastic bar with great range of bottled beer and on draught. if you like proper beer and ales with flavour this is the place for yoyu.
17 Mar 2010 18:25
Large friendly bath ales pub. Friendly service, who serve a brilliant roast beef. Service a bit slow, to be expected on mothering sunday, but staff will informed myself of this so not a problem.
If you are in this neck of the woods well worth popping in for a couple of pints.
14 Mar 2010 14:22
went in for the first time the other night since it has reopened as the Royal Oak. i can safely say this is a vast improvement on the previous incarnation.
Five real ales on tap, and only tried the Butcombe Gold, which was in top form. Didn't try the food but looks an intersting menu, and as previously stated, it is very much a gastro style menu, which I will try at some stage no doubt. The staff who were on were very friendly as well, telling us about what sort of offers that they had on.
All in all well worth a visit if you are in this part of town.
13 Mar 2010 11:25
Nice friendly local, it feels like that you are drinking in someones front room.
Has a nice garden with a fantastic views, which will be ieal for summer drinking. Also has a very nice flower displays.
Only downside? Limited choice of real ale for my other half.

The White Lion, Westbury on Trym
Painfully slow service, steaks full of gristle.
This could be a fantastic pub, but let down by poor customer service and a smug manager.
