The Cow, Parkstone

Top marks to the team who refurbished this pub from the Parkstone into the Cow. Really has a unique, trend setting, feel about it. Ideal starting point for a night out.

The Dorset Knob, Parkstone

For me, the Knob always comes across as a locals pub though the MacDonalds next door may change this. It's good points are that it's trouble free and cosy. But I can't say it's every been a particularly attractive place to visit.

The Woodman, Branksome

Visited this recently after a long absence following a disagreement with one of the local gypsies and the landlord. What a change. Following a refurbishment and a new landlord this pub has definitely changed gear. Still gets many foreign students as customers from what I could tell. I've always liked the Woodman but was put off because of some of the locals who used to frequent. Will be using it as a stop off point in the future. Has a dance floor, eating area and plenty of amusements.

The Pig And Whistle, Bournemouth

Tricky one to rate. My own view is that it's a bit trendy but a bit too small and boring. It's not on the best road in town with views of a car park and the flyover. But worth a visit all the same if only because there is an excellent Nepalese restaurant just along from it.

Goat and Tricycle, Bournemouth

Still the most hospitable pub on the west side of Bournemouth. If you are a visitor to the town and staying on the West Cliff, I suggest you make the Goat your local during your stay. Draws, quizzes and games for the kids are made available. Also has a beer garden for the summer. Just a shame that the second level bar has been closed.

The Punch and Judy, Bournemouth

Although still rough around the edges, the landlord has done a great job trying to make this pub more accessible to a broader range of clients. My guess is that lack of investment is the problem. It's a great pub for real drinkers but I think casual visitors may be put off by it. Still, one of my personal favourites on the west side of Bournemouth.

The Moon in the Square, Bournemouth

I think this pub is just badly laid out. The bar area is too small. You have to walk up steps to get to the restaurant area and just about everywhere else. Weatherspoons need to think about redesigning it and certainly let in more light.

Bar Vin, Bournemouth

Excellent pub with good range of drinks and food, plus large dance floor for the evenings. Seems to attract the more mature, trouble free clientele. My only criticism is that it can look dark inside during the daytime. But had many good nights in Bar Vin.

The Slug and Lettuce, Bournemouth

A bit prententious. The kind of place you start from, not end up at. Tends to attract suited gents and well dressed ladies. Never has any need of door staff because nothing much happens there.

The Litten Tree, Bournemouth

Lively pub with dance floor which tends to attract the girls. Door staff are very visible inside the pub. Most annoying thing is having the assistant in the gents looking for a tip for handing you a towel. Typical range of drinks.

O'Neills, Bournemouth

Probably the best pub on the eastern side of Bournemouth town centre. Live music, excellent bar and door staff and plenty of Guiness on tap. Used to be known as the Lansdowne when it was infamous for a hostage siege back in the 80's I believe. Seems to attract the more mature pub goers.

The Christopher Creeke , Bournemouth

An open spaced modern pub come wine bar designed mainly to attract female customers (and thus male customers). Bouncers welcome because it is near the Lansdowne. Range of beers and lagers limited and slightly expensive. Lots of foreign staff behind the bar, mainly attractive barmaids. They have installed some touch screen computers on some tables. Good pub to sit in during the summer and watch the world go by.

The Horse and Jockey, Bournemouth

Dedicated to the sport of kings, horse racing, this pub is friendly but could do with some refurbishment.

The Crown, Northbourne

The crown comes across as a well managed local where you will find many white van brigade painters, decorators and plumbers. Staff are very professional and friendly. Thursday night pub quizz is excellent entertainment. Has a separate sports bar which is more workman like. Latest range of food looks good for the price. Has been refurbished attractively. TV viewing is good because it has four Sky televisions. Drinks not expensive.

The Ensbury Park, Bournemouth

This pub looks particularly rowdy from the outside. I have seen couples arguing outside and peeing against the walls when driving past.
