The White Hart, Lichfield

Quite rough and ready locals' pub but not unfriendly. Barman was hospitable when I went in there. The fact they sell no ales is a drawback. This is technically my local but I don't think I'll become a regular.

The Feathers, Lichfield

A nice warm interior to quite a large pub. A friendly welcome from the gaffer who served me a nice pint of mild. However, I could have done without the racist jokes he was telling to 2 of the regulars after I went to sit down. Consequently I won't be coming here again.

The Windmill, Lichfield

Quite rough and ready but not unwelcoming. As said before, if you want to watch football it's a good cheap venue but beerwise it's not great.

The Uplands, Handsworth

This pub has been demolished to make way for flats.

21 May 2009 11:51

The Queens Head, Handsworth

Has been demolished and flats built in its place

Yr Hen Llew Du, Aberystwyth

Came here inspired by the vague memory of the reviews here. Walked in when some club rugby was on which might have explained why so few women were in (this was a Saturday night). Selection of beers was disappointing and it did have a bit of a locals pub feel. Only stayed for the one but that was long enough to appreciate the Welsh language prog rock on the jukebox and the overall friendliness of the place (including the barmaid who was very pleasant).

The Lord Clifden, Birmingham

Closing for a four week refurb on 26 January. Not sure what the plans are.

Oh! Bar, Camden

Rather enjoyed it here, early on a Saturday evening. Had a bottle of Old Peculier. Thought they did what they did well, balance of beer, music, ambience and not a bad crowd.

The Church Inn, Hockley

Ambitious boozer retaining the best bits

Bacchus, Birmingham

Good decor. Service OK. Food disappointing - preprepped ingredients, not very good. A bit pricey but nice intimate, quirky surroundings.

The Old Contemptibles, Birmingham

Been since for second time since refurb. Short staffed on a Saturday night (one person serving). A parsimonious and shortsighted move on the part of the pub company methinks!

The Spotted Dog, Digbeth

Cosy, good range of beers. Great gaffer.

The Old Contemptibles, Birmingham

Has had a refurb. Superb interior, good service. Had 4 real ales on when I visited. Used to be 6/10, now an 8. Definitely worth a try.

The Cross Keys Inn, Ombersley

Food was particularly good. Very friendly staff. Excellent beer!

Moby Dicks, Digbeth

Pub now closed and set to be demolished

The Endwood, Handsworth

Should maybe have come here on a normal night (I was there on the night of Springstock). Service was very poor and many of the regulars were pretty moody. The landlord seemed friendly but a hint inexperienced.

Interior is nice and roomy although maybe a little neglected. It has a large garden.

I'll try on a "normal" day but I can't say I was impressed.

The Bartons Arms, Aston

In terms of buses may I add that not only the 51, but also the 33,34, 52 and 156 all stop at the Bartons to and from town.

The Rainbow, Birmingham

Not a normal "drop in" pub anymore. It only opens for special events. Consequently I haven't been in and in the light of this I've withdrawn my rating.

The Prince of Wales, Moseley

If only you could get the service of this place and the beers of The Fighting Cocks and you'd have the ultimate Moseley boozer. Good beer and service, not bad clientele. I get the impression a number of the ex-Fighting Cocks crowd come here now.

Goose At The Fighting Cocks, Moseley

Could be so much better if only they took service more seriously. Nice interior, adventurous beers, good food. 2 on the bar when 15 are waiting is not good, especially when ther seem to be a multitude of "managers" not prepared to get the queue down. Oh yes and the barstaff need to understand that the mark line on a glass above the bit saying "half pint" is not just decoration.

The Bulls Head, Hall Green

Clean, good beer, good service. Well decorated. Cosy on a throughly washed-out day!

The Giffard Arms, Wolverhampton

Went in as part of my "new pub every week" New Year's Resolution. Was a little taken aback by its metalness (looks like an old man's boozer from outside) but was impressed. Three ales on. Bar staff attentive. Decor interesting. Toilets clean. Having read earlier comments please note, I am southern and the service did not seem to suffer for it. I shall make a regular visit before gigs in Wolve-O.

The Guildford Arms, Edinburgh

Last time I was in here was just before Christmas. I'd always been quite a fan so when visiting Embra a mate and I decided to pop in. Had some superb German wheat beer during the drinking of which we realised Keira Knightley was sat over the way with some of her mates.

So it's home to the stars too!

Darwin's, Birmingham

Went here for the first time yesterday. Strange layout with pool tables in both rooms. Decor quite light and cheery. 3 cask ales on offer.

The Queens Arms, Birmingham

Quiet, which can be quite welcome. Beers good but pricey.

The Old Royal, Birmingham

I enjoy coming here, nice decor, good staff, good beers.

However, I find the idea of having a "non-smoking area" as delineated by the signs, with ashtrays on the tables and no enforcement of said policy, a bit annoying.

I mean, have a non-smoking area or not. I'm looking forward to when there won't be any choice in the matter.

The Lost and Found, Birmingham

Interior is superb and is stylish and comfy. Bar staff tend to be superb or surly. Have encountered some slightly mental punters in here. The tendency to play loud crap music can ruin the atmosphere.

The Garden Gate, Hamstead

30s style bungalow pub with large car park. A little frayed at the edges and seems to have a high staff turnover so service can be a little eccentric.

Clean, friendly and cosy though and worth popping into if you're passing.

The Cask and Barrel, Edinburgh

I'm also English and lived in Edinburgh for a while. The Cask is my favourite Edinburgh pub and I was never made to feel unwelcome there.

The Merlin, Morningside

Went there on a Friday afternoon. Beer selection was reasonable and bar service was good. However, ordering food was problematic as it was table service. This entailed sitting at the table and looking in the direction of the "waitresses" who seemed too busy chatting to spot customers waiting. Another customer went and asked at the bar who got one of them to come over. The food was good and was served quickly. When asked if we wanted anything else we replied that we would like the bill. The waitress disappeared back to her previous conversation. After 10 minutes we went to the bar to settle up. If food was ordered at the bar it would work a lot better!

20 Sep 2006 15:56

The Bartons Arms, Aston

The fire damage is mainly in the cellar and the public interior is unaffected save for the smell of a wood fire!

18 Aug 2006 20:00

The Spotted Dog, Digbeth

Very friendly family run pub. Service and beers excellent. Good for showing Celtic games and gaelic sport (saw them put a Derry City game once for 2 punters!) although I've watched an England friendly here too. Worth avoiding at 4:45pm on a Birmingham City home matchday unless you are a Blues fan!

23 Jul 2006 18:58

The Grove Hotel, Handsworth

Pleasant small local boozer on the edge of Handsworth Wood. Can appear a little daunting from the outside but is welcoming once you step inside, especially if you enter the darker but more comfortable back bar. Clientele must be one of the most ethnically diverse in the UK and during the many times I've been in here I've never seen any trouble apart from the occasional upset within a group. The beers are limited but cheap and the staff are very pleasant. Food is cooked on the premises (simple but good Panjabi dishes) and is worth a punt. I wouldn't recommend travelling any distance to come here, but if in the area it's worth dropping in.

19 Jul 2006 18:59

The Littleton Arms, Walsall

Website now says it's been taken over by the council. Shame because I particularly used to enjoy a guest ale whilst listening to Ross's Prog Rock Disco on a Thursday. This place is a sad loss to all. I look forward to finding out where the gaffer is moving to.
