Kings Arms, Haworth

Whilst staying in Haworth, my wife and I seemed to frequent this place a little too much. We went outside our hotel and heard some terrible singing. We asked a local, who told us there was karaoke here with "the worst singers in 'Awuth". This was enough of a draw to make us have a look and we went back each night we stayed there. Everybody was fairly friendly, the bar staff and bar manager (who doubled as the DJ) were welcoming and the drinks weren't overly pricey, especially considering how touristy Haworth is. A lot of fun is to be had if you don't take yourself too seriously.

The Old White Lion Hotel, Haworth

Stayed at the Old White Lion on Valentines weekend. The hotel was excellent but that's another review for another site. As a pub, it was very good. A warm mix of locals and tourists, it serves excellent pub food, has a very good wine list and has some local ales on tap, as well as the usual pub favourites. The staff were warm, polite and very helpful, giving us tips about other restaurants and pubs in Haworth. It was by no means a party place but for a quiet drink with friends, it's one of the best pubs I've been to in ages.

The White Bear, Fickleshole

I like the Bear. Food's good, ambience is excellent, beer/wine has always been spot on. Exactly the sort of country pub you want and it's not that far away.

The William IV, Elmers End

This used to be my local about 10 years ago but now they can't seem to do anything to turn this pub around. The staff seem friendly enough, the lager is fine and they always have something going on, be it a quiz or a karaoke or something. However, they could do with cleaning the toilets properly, they really stink. The crowd skews older, there wasn't a hint of trouble but the pub just feels... grubby.

The Nags Head, Islington

The staff were friendly, food was decent and the beer hit the spot.

The Black Sheep Bar, Croydon

I find it hard to be objective. Yes, the draft beer can be bad. Yes, it's grimy. No, it can't touch the good old days. However, it's still the Black Sheep and it's still pretty much the only venue in an eight mile radius that consistently caters to the alternative crowd. It's the only option for an indie club.

The Green Dragon, Croydon

I can't fault this place. Never aggressive when there's football on, tons of different ales and beers, food is always good and very good value and they regularly have live music upstairs. I only wish it was closer to where I live.

The Railway Hotel, West Wickham

Very little right with this pub. The beer is dreadful in every respect - badly kept and inexpertly poured. The staff are dreadful and it feels like one of the most generic chain pubs I've ever been to. I only end up there because my friend refuses to go to the Swan.

The Hogshead, Beckenham

It's now a Slug and Lettuce, who obviously don't pay the money to update this site! It has become the preferred starting point for many of my colleagues, mainly because they do cocktails and Peroni on tap, which seems to be the current fashionable pint. Very pricey, nearly 4 for one of their more exotic lagers. Food is also pricey but, in my experience, you get large portions and one of their sharing platter will easily go between six.

O'Neill's, Beckenham

This used to be the preferred hangout for my work colleagues but has fallen out of favour, pretty much because it is a victim of its own success. Weekend evenings always seems to be rammed, especially after payday, and feature a DJ playing a cheesy mix of modern and retro pop. He never disappoints when I have a few jars and request Kenny Loggins. The last few times there has always been an incident that has marred the evening and while the security have always been polite and understanding, the bar manager is very quick to throw people out. However, I've been there early in the evening several times and had nice food and have never had to complain about the beer. A good time can be had if you don't take things too seriously and like young, attractive women.

Patrick's, Beckenham

The previous reviewer makes a fair point. I've had some excellent nights in Patrick's but I've also had a night where my friend got started on for no reason. I've never had cause to complain about the beer and it has mostly been a good place to hang out.

The George, Beckenham

In the summer, this place is excellent. Nice beer garden, right in the middle of the High Street. In the winter, you have to sit inside and see that it's actually not all that pleasant, a bit ragged and in dire need of a refit. Also, considering that this is a historic pub, the interior could be a bit more... traditional, rather than its current bland feel.

The Jolly Woodman, Beckenham

It is a traditional locals pub, which is why it is so well-liked. As the saying goes, in the valley of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Beckenham is the valley of the blind but that still makes the Woodman a one-eyed man. It has well-kept ales that are a bit on the pricey side and the bar staff are friendly enough but it's still a locals pub that has gained a not-entirely-undeserved reputation for being cliquey. Still, that makes it better than pretty much anywhere else in town.

Flux, Beckenham

I suppose this place is a bit on the young side being over 18s. Entry is a bit steep considering it's a small suburban club (7) but the beer isn't especially overpriced and the security seem to do their job without being overbearing. The dress code is more flexible than Bridge Bar and the DJs are always excellent. If only it were a bit bigger!

Ben Crouch's Tavern, Fitzrovia

I wasn't as impressed by the interior as everybody else is but my visit revealed this as a great rock pub on a Saturday. Yes, rock not metal. Beer was good, people seemed nice and the music is excellent.

The Bridge Bar, Beckenham

This is the sort of place which would not exist if there was a decent nightclub in Beckenham for people over the age of 19. First of all, we have the antiquated door policies. With shirts and shoes mandatory for guys, you'll feel as though you've walked through a timewarp and popped up in the mid-90s. Turn up in a smart jumper and trainers and be prepared to be turned away. Secondly, the DJs generally suck. The guy who has DJ'd downstairs on a Saturday every time I've been there simply cannot mix two records together. They play OK music but there's no technique there. Thirdly, considering the bad music and the mid-90's door policy, it's actually not all that good and pricey for what it is. It's anachronistic and the only thing I liked was all the pictures of bridges.

The Goose, Beckenham

Usual Goose fare. It has had a bit of a refit but it's essentially the same pub as before. A mixture of office workers and dodgy characters who are all there because the beer is cheap. The food isn't all that good, the beer is average but it's cheap so who really cares?

The Temperance, Putney Bridge

Went in on Boat Race day to find there was no table service and the already pricey menu was replaced with a truncated menu designed entirely to fleece the casual punter. This would not be a problem except they took orders based on the normal menu, only to say we couldn't have it later and they wanted more money off us. There was 10 of us, we'd have stayed in there for ages but a complete lack of customer service and the ramped up prices drove us away. Very disappointing.
