Yates's, Manchester

In Manchester for a meeting and had a meal (mixed grill) and a pint (Pride of Pendle) here. Both were acceptable rather than exceptional. All in all what you would expect from a Yates'.

The Circus Tavern, Manchester

Tiny pub with a big welcome. When we arrived, both rooms appeared full, but after a polite request from the barmaid, everyone shifted up a bit to allow us to sit down. Had a couple of pints of Dizzy Blonde and all in all a very pleasant evening.

The Three Legged Mare, York

Went in here before the football and it was busy with both home and away fans mixing freely. Had a couple of pints of Terrier which were excellent. Shame about the match!

The Salamander, Bath

A warm welcome greeted us when we walked in from cheery bar staff. A couple of pints of Jem went down well whilst we decided what to have from the menu. I have to say that we had one of the best pub meals I have had in a long time. A very pleasant evening all round.

The Marlborough Tavern, Bath

Popped in here for lunch the ther day. Nice pint of butcombe and the food was excellent quality, if a little pricey. I understand what other posters are saying - this is veering more towards a restaurant that serves beer, but I have to say I liked it and so did the in-laws!

The Bell, Standerwick

We were afforded a warm welcome when we stopped on the way to Bath. My ploughman's was excellent (Best coleslaw I've ever tasted!) and all our party reported their food was first class. A range of Hall and Woodhouse beers on offer, but I can't comment on the quality as I was driving. (The man on the next table did say his Fursty Ferrett was fairly decent!).
I would definitley call in again if I am this way.

The Kirkstone Pass Inn, Kirkstone Pass

Have to agree with the previous comments - a truly fantastic setting and a damned good pub. Good selection of ales and food was freshly made and tasty. Worth the ascent to get there.

The Strickland Arms, Great Strickland

Good family friendly pub in Cumbrian village. "Early bird" meals excellent value and "Cockerhoop" well kept.

The Fetherston Arms, Kirkoswald

Busy locals pub that still affords a hearty welcome to strangers from "the south". Food was excellent and very good value.

Crown Inn, Kirkoswald

Very friendly and welcoming pub. Home made food was excellent and good value for money.

The Pilot Inn, North Greenwich

What a cracking pub! Just 5 minutes from the O2 yet a million miles from the bland corporate offerings within "Entertainment Avenue". Full of locals of all sorts - people on the way home from the office, students and workers. Lovely pint of Pride and I can't believe the last comment about the food. We had a fantastic ploughman's and some nice devilled whitebait. Just right to set us up for the Stevie Wonder gig. Long may this be an "undiscovered" gem.

The Rising Sun, Smithfield

Another few rounds of Samuel Smiths and the delicious bacon baguettes set us up nicely for the cup final. Landlord was cheerful and all in all a good boozer.

The Greencoat Boy, Victoria

Unoriginalname has summed this pub up perfectly. A decent enough boozer and at least they were happy to serve us unlike the Albert.

The Albert, St James's

We went to this pub after the FA Cup Semi Final and they were happy to serve us and take our money. On returning after the Final, we were refused service as we were wearing football shirts. When we asked would it be ok if we covered the shirts with jackets, we were told we would not now be served as we were "getting lippy". I hasten to add that we were predominantly a group of 40-somethings who were just looking for a place to have a few quiet celebratory beers. Clearly more interested in fleecing the tourists. Avoid.

The Albert, St James's

Reasonable, if pricey boozer. Food was good and actually not too dear.

The Rising Sun, Smithfield

This pub opened up early for us on the day of the FA Cup semi-final and proved to be a cracking little pub. Samuel smith's on at 1.86 a pint (yes , in London!) and fantastic bacon baguettes. Friendly service and a cheery landlord. I'm almost sorry we beat West Ham three days later as well!

Brewers Arms, Southsea

Really good pub - excellent for footie at Fratton Park - home and away fans welcomed. Good range of beers - Fuller's London Pride and HSB for the real ale buffs.

Lloyds No.1, Port Solent

After last visit went back with some workmates. Food was a bit hit and miss as half the stuff on the menu was no longer available. Still reasonable value.

The Central Bar, Shepherds Bush

Went in before going to see Southside Johnny at the Empire. Ok for a pre-gig pint, absolutely packed. Some "interesting" characters in there.

The Crown, Covent Garden

Friendly little pub just off Shaftesbury Avenue. Popped in beofre going to Hairspray at the Shaftesbury and had a decent pint of 6X. Didn't have anything to eat, but the paninis were being cooked behind the bar in front of us and certainly the girl behind the bar can't have been on a Health and Safety course recently! Interesting expedition downstairs (mind your head) to get to the gents.

The Jack Horner, Tottenham Court Road

Pleasant and comfortable pub - I'd agree with GuideDog Saint, this is a good meeting point for gigs at the Astoria or indeed anywhere in the West End. Can't comment on the food, although looked ok on the menu!

Duke of Wellington, Southampton

If you have to go to Southampton, then go to this pub as it is the best in town.

29 Oct 2007 18:08

The Clachnaharry Inn, Clachnaharry

Went to this pub as it had such good write-ups both on here and the Good Beer Guide. Had a decent couple of pints of Three Sisters, but not sure it was worth the trip out of town - ok but not brilliant.

Kings Highway, Inverness

Have to agree with the comments about the food. Went there on Thursday as it was curry night and I've had some decent curries in Spoonies around the country. However on this occasion, the lamb rogan josh was pretty awful - powdery sauce and soggy popadums. Beer ok and clientele was typical Spoonies mix of suits on the way home from work and those attracted by the cheapness of the beer. Although it was only early evening, there were a few who'd had a few!

28 Oct 2007 13:00

The Blackfriars, Inverness

A bit quiet the night I was there and no live music. Beer was ok and beef stovies with beetroot and oatcakes was an interesting dish!

28 Oct 2007 12:56

Lloyds No.1, Port Solent

Service was ok the evening we went there. As with all Spoony's it serves great value food and drink.

17 Sep 2007 18:54

Thomas Ingoldsby, Canterbury

Good beer and food. Service was quick and attentive. Clientele was "mixed" to say the least!

17 Sep 2007 18:52

The White Hart, Denmead

Refurb has certainly improved this place(not always the case) and the food was really good. Had an excellent pint of the guest beer - Proper Job. Well worth a visit.

27 Aug 2007 20:31

The Lanyard, North End

Food and service were good on the day we visited. Unfortunately the real ales were off at the time, but I was driving so not too bothered!

13 Jun 2007 21:37

The Rutland Arms, Sheffield

Great pub - friendly service and good choice of beers. We went here before watching Pompey against Sheff Utd and there was a good mix of locals and away fans, all enjoying a good time. As for closing regrettably, it seems it is due for closure in the not too distant future which would be a shame.
