The Jolly Gardeners serves a good selection of German beers (draught and bottled). I particularly like the draught Weihenstephan beers. I've been there three times in the last year and always found the staff friendly and helpful. (Note: they only serve German beers.)

The Robert Browning, Maida Vale
Friendly efficient staff. I liked the Organic Wheat Beer. The interior seems to be Victorian. There are windows commemorating Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Note: Sam Smiths pubs only serve Sam Smiths beers. If you don't like Sam Smiths beers, I suggest you don't visit Sam Smiths pubs.

Eight handpumps on yesterday, including Bateman's Mild and Peat Porter. So I rate the pub very good for beer selection. (The beer is the most important thing, but note: tedious pop music was playing in the background - well I thought it was tedious; and the taps on the handbasin in the Gents on the ground floor didn't work.)

Seven of the nine pumps were in use last night (Monday): mainly Milton beers (of course) but with one or two guest beers. It's a friendly local pub with its own style. I'll drop in again later this week.

There's a good selection of real ales (about ten). Personally I'd prefer more guest beers and fewer Fullers beers.

The King Charles I, Kings Cross
Friendly lively local pub. However, the only real ale on on Wed evening was Deuchars. There's also about twenty bottled beers.

I and a friend spent an enjoyable two hours there yesterday evening - though it was very busy when we left at six. They sell bottles of Old Peculiar.

I agree with the reviewers who praise the Pembury Tavern. However, about four of the last ten reviewers have suggested that the decor could be improved, and I agree with them too. For example, some well-placed big plants and screens would break the space up.

At about 12-30 today the pub only had three beers on (none of them real ales), so, reluctantly, I had an orange juice. For lunch I had a salad, which was freshly made and quite tasty.

The Lord John Russell, Russell Square
The pub is growing on me. As beeronaut says, they have Budvar Dark. They'd also taken some care over the flowers on the tables. And I like the large clear-glass windows.

The Angel in the Fields, Bond Street
If I'm in the area and fancy a quiet drink with a friend, this is the pub I'll go to.

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell
It's a unique pub: fine beers from St Peter's brewery, simple worn wood-panelled interior, handsome late Georgian shopfront, and tile representations of the seasons. Visit mid-afternoon if you can and then you'll probably get a table.
2 Jun 2007 22:03
It has a fine tiled interior and seems to offer some of the less common real ales. I think I had Black Sheep there last week. It can get very busy but I had a choice of seats at noon last Thursday.

I enjoy a quick drink in Quinn's. I've been there four times in total and always found the staff pleasant. I'm slowly working my way through the list of bottled beers (from the end backwards).

Convenient location (at the back of Westminster Cathedral), Samuel Smiths beers (which I like), pleasant interior (though as yet I've only seen it by artificial light), central bar lit curiously by lampshades.

It's a very good pub. I don't think any of the reviewers have mentioned the lunch menu: a choice from about eight dishes plus half a pint of beer (or a soft drink) - all for the bargain price of 5.

Normally three rotating real ales, but one was off when I visited. The beer garden itself looks out onto a green space. The boxing club (with stained glass windows) is West Ham Boys Amateur Boxing Club. I liked the pub, and it will stay in my mind longer than most pubs that I visit.

The Sekforde Arms, Clerkenwell
Comfortable, friendly, old-fashioned Young's pub. I liked it. However, Young's beers are widely available, so I'm a bit bored with them.

The customers are rough but friendly enough. The real ales are less common ones, including today Nethergate India Pale Ale. I do enjoy a quick drink in this pub after a visit to Atlantis.

The Lord John Russell, Russell Square
Four real ales, including Broadside. Presumably it's a Victorian pub, but few of the original interior features are left. Lively interesting area; for example, Judd Books are across the road. But for me there's nothing that makes the pub memorable.

I was there on Thursday. Comfortable friendly pub, interior has some nice Victorian features, about six Harvey's beers.

I agree with other reviewers that the food is good (reasonably priced, good quality ingredients, and well-presented). My comment is based on trying two dishes: ploughman's lunch and a nut burger.
28 Aug 2006 01:20
Four or five real ales, pleasant staff, veggie options on the menu, plus a book club once a month. The evening I was there the music played was bland pop, which I didn't like. A decent pub.

I was there on Monday. The doors were open, so I could see inside. There were about six real ales, including Nethergate's Umbel Ale. The interior seemed a bit characterless to me; perhaps some big colourful pictures on the walls would help. Like other reviewers I want the pub to succeed.

The Artillery Arms, Old Street
It's a pleasant well-run Fullers pub but there's nothing memorable about it. I don't understand why it's got such a high rating (curently 7.7/10).
19 Jul 2006 23:55
Four comfortable wooden rooms, seating in courtyard, three or four real ales including Wadsworths 6X, very pleasant on a Sunday evening.

The Old Thameside Inn, London Bridge
Very very busy (as it would be) with office workers in their 20s and 30s early one Friday evening. Three or four real ales and the staff were efficient and good humoured. It's too busy for me but many people love it.
17 Jul 2006 19:08
My experience was similar to MrBabble's. I was doing a walk from Borough Green to Sevenoaks via Plaxtol on a Sunday. Three or four real ales (I had Badger), seating outside, the pub was getting enough custom to stay open all afternoon.
11 Jun 2006 23:29
Central location (five minutes walk from Oxford Circus and round the corner from Carnaby Street). Samuel Smiths beers, which I like. Back bar (with dart board) can be quite noisy. Front bar is quieter. I liked it.

The comments of djburns on 18/2/06 still apply. The pub is comfortable (padded benches and sofas) and seems a long way from the bustle round Camden Town tube. Unfortunately there was still only one cask ale and, as before, it had run out. Some of the customers prefer bottled beers (budweiser, leffe)

The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell
I've been in the Pakenham Arms about six times in the past year and I've always had decent service from the staff. They always have a selection of real ales, the customers are mainly men, and the food is an afterthought.
20 Apr 2006 16:15
Four or five real ales, interesting interior (floor mosaics and woodwork), half empty when I got there at 4pm on a Wednesday, but filled up rapidly.
20 Apr 2006 16:02
Friendly staff, three real ales, round the corner from the Camden Garden Centre.
22 Mar 2006 00:19
Friendly staff, veggie options on menu, but only two real ales.
10 Mar 2006 00:11
Pleasant pub, friendly staff, solid wooden bar with brass rail, 1970s lampshades, two real ales, seven or eight pies on the menu (three of them vegetarian), Poole gravy boat. When I was there a customer was served the wrong pie; the barman apologised and gave the customer a free glass of wine.
22 Feb 2006 16:51
Handsome wooden bar, globe lights, bust of Brunel, three or four real ales, nice mix of customers (from builders to trendy young things). At present The Prince George is my favourite Hackney pub.
18 Feb 2006 19:14
I can't add much to what people have already said. I particularly enjoy sitting in the side room before or after a visit to Tate Modern (which is ten minutes walk away).
12 Feb 2006 20:46
Friendly barman, two real ales, wide range of bottled German and Belgian beers. However, I found the flashing lights high up on the walls distracting.
12 Feb 2006 20:34
In my opinion the finest pub interior in London. It can get very busy in the evenings, so you might have to wait for a while to get a seat.
2 Feb 2006 18:43
Fine interior, Samuel Smiths beers, often gets very busy, so it might be a while before you get a seat.
2 Feb 2006 18:35
Comfortable, friendly, busy gastro pub. Two real ales. I liked it.
28 Jan 2006 21:13
Very handsome Victorian interior: high ceiling, lots of mirrors and windows, big wooden bar. Two real ales, comfortable, traditional, and slightly shabby. I liked it a lot.
25 Mar 2005 13:14
Two real ales, including a beer named after the pub. I found it a very comfortable pub to sit in for an hour in the early evening.
17 Mar 2005 23:45
Comfortable, friendly pub. One real ale: Brakspear Bitter. Vegetarian food available.
14 Feb 2005 14:49
Comfortable, friendly pub. Two real ales: Brakspear Special and Hook Norton Mild. The staff are happy to serve ramblers; there's a bootscraper behind the door if your boots are muddy.

The Magdala, Hampstead
We were there this afternoon. The pub was very busy but they let us sit on one of the sofas in the dining room - even though we were just having a drink. They had one craft beer that I hadnt heard of before, which I had and liked (sorry I cant remember the name). The food looked good and we decided to return another Sunday and try it. Dogs are welcome. We had our puppy with us.
