The White Hart, Waterloo

This could be such a nice pub, but for the second time running I've had breathtakingly bad service in there. It beggars belief - staff hanging around chatting, refusing to believe my brother when he pointed out the lemonade had run out and he was actually drinking soda water, and yes, the sticky surfaces and empty condiments show they can't be bothered to keep the place clean either. Above all the rude unfriendly way we were treated has put me off going back.

The Jolly Coopers, Hampton

A truly great old-fashioned pub with a proper friendly welcome. Cannot recommend highly enough, and the food in the restaurant at the back is great too.

The Wrestlers, Highgate

I'm looking forward to the winter months, and the only reason is the lovely big fire that's on at the wrestlers. do prefer it in the week as it's quieter, but I must say one of this pub's strengths is its excellent service. Very friendly and attentive staff, the model of how a pub should be run.

The Railway Tavern, Crouch End

I went in recently and had a burger which was fantastic, really good service and decent music which wasn't on too loud. It looks really beautiful inside, a great place for couples or mates to meet.

The Defector's Weld, Shepherds Bush

I'm not going to have a go about the BBC types, especially given the lack of choice in the area. But what I really can't stand is when bar staff leave you standing there for ages, and just rudely walk past going nowhere in particular. I end up in here before going to the music venue but in future I'll take my chances elsewhere. What does it really cost to just say 'be with you in a minute'???

INDO, Whitechapel

Staff are very friendly in here, but it's small so on a busy night get there early to get a seat. And have a pizza, they're fantastic.

The Salmon and Ball, Bethnal Green

When I was a teenager, this pub was opposite another and one, I forget which, was meant to belong to the ICF while the other was National Front. That pub is now an estate agents; I think this pub has mellowed since those days (15 years ago!) but still wouldn't feel totally happy about getting p*ssed in there.

The Boogaloo, Highgate

I went there for the first time last Saturday, and though it did strike me as being a bit moody when I walked in I had a great night. The DJ played everything from northern soul to reggae to garage (as in the 60s guitar stuff) and the crowd turned out to be friendly and raucous. Maybe I was lucky, as there were no "celebrities" there that night...

The Wrestlers, Highgate

It's lovely inside, good service and usually just enough people (though I've never been on a Friday or Saturday night). As a visitor to Highgate, I must admit I always used to go to the Flask, but now I'm living there I've picked this as my local. You don't get the really pretentious types in here, I have found so far.

The White Swan, Richmond

If you want to eat at the weekends, it's best to book, but the food is damn fine, and the location couldn't be better - just off the green, and a winding short walk to the river. Just isolated enough to be well away from the Edwards-O'Neills mob as well.

The Trawlerman, Cleethorpes

I ate here twice in a weekend (long story), and it was among the worst food I've ever eaten. The pork in the roast dinner my partner had made Bernard Matthews look like top quality meat, the veg were all soggy and tasteless, and the service was very rude. Trapped audience due to the Beachcomber and Thorpe Park holiday sites, but if you're staying there it is certainly worth making the effort to go into the town.

The Approach Tavern, Bethnal Green

Good mixed crowd, though sometimes a few too many screechy children in the outside area. Nice beers, and an absolutely cracking Sunday roast.

Bradleys, Fitzrovia

Probably my favourite place in London, though I was a bit disappointed to see that there were some modern tunes among the jukebox choices. The tragedy is it will probably be sold at some point to be replaced by an awful chain fast food store.

Ye Olde Harrow, Thames Ditton

This pub is subject to a planning application to turn it into flats.
