Fox & Hounds, Tadley

I visited this pub on a Friday lunchtime as I was visiting the area. I did my research and their website – hosted by John Barras Pubs –and it had a cheap and varied menu.

However despite the website and food promotion posters – there was no food. We don’t do it and haven’t for ‘ for several weeks’ When I pointed out the promotions and the web site they said ‘oh that’s head office’s job.’
They struggled so much with the Doombar then said ‘End of the barrel’ although I heard them say to each other ‘ its just been put on’. So I don’t know what's happening there.

So I gave up and , God forbid, had a cold lager. All in all a wasted experience. Probably only suited for playing pool and watching sport.

The Dew Drop Inn, Hurley

What a great find due to BITE. Visited yesterday enroute from Hurley. If you want to quibble the pub is not quite in Hurley and if you are walking best to come from Knowl Hill.

Well kept Brakspears and food looked good. Selection of newspapers and The Economist for more financially aware drinkers.

On my list for Winter Walking pubs. Im bored by The Pot Kiln.

The Jolly Gardeners, Vauxhall

Visiting Tate Britain and getting a bus at Vauxhall [No36 to Paddington if you intend to visit pub] and I saw an article for this place at the grittier end of Lambeth Walk Not kidding! Just walk through the park. However, that is another story.

German Beer choice immense. However, now at 3.80 which is rather steep and probably unnecessary. Food came in cheaper and was very good.

Pub empty at one oclock on Tuesday lunchtime although next pub towards the river was packed with office workers.

Staff needs an injection of humour. All rather dour. Will try it again but disturbed by those beer prices.

The Jolly Anglers, Reading

Has been closed but there maybe plans to reopen hopefully with a more hard working and efficient management.

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

No one in it yesterday lunchtime which is a bit shocking for a Thursday lunchtime. Has BITE got that much clout?

The Captain Kidd, Wapping

No real ale or Guinness yesterday. However good location and pleasant views over the river. A good stop on the trail through Wapping to Limehouse and the Grapes.

The Grapes, Limehouse

Great pub with three real ales when I went. Can catch the sunset on the small deck out of the back which, I would add, is 'non smoking'. Food must be OK as Delia Smith was having her lunch in there yesterday. Maybe Gordon Ramset kicked her out of his restaurant a few doors down!

The Moderation, Reading

Andy Becalick, who also owns The Lyndhurst Arms in Queens Road, has taken over the pub and its been greatly improved well it wouldnt take much would it?

Cushions on benches, stripped floor, decent food and two real ales. While I was there a couple of oiks came in but were so repulsed by the great ambience and cleanliness that they backed out quietly.

This pub needs to be supported as it is the only proper pub left on this side of the bridge.

The Ferryboat Inn, Whitchurch on Thames

Visted today but I was shocked by the blandness. I preferred the atmosphere described by 'BinBagBob' as riotous, hallucinogenic agglomeration of chintzy paraphernalia and assorted ephemera. Probably not bother again. Best to go to the Cross Keys in Pangbourne - a gem.

The Hop Leaf, Reading

Well the surly woman is still there and it's probably her name over the door along with the other two licensees. This pub always let down by its extremely smoky atmosphere...the worst in Reading..ok so there's the Hobgoblin. Smokers sit at the bar even at the place that says 'no sitting here.' Sort out the smoking/surly bar staff and this would be a fine boozer.
The pub serves good beer (note good - as it once would have rated excellent) but it is not a patch on its sister pub (The Duck Inn in Laverstock)
