The Captain Kidd, Wapping

A perfectly nice Sam Smiths pub, but unfortunately the bar-staff are utterly useless and unbelievably rude. Don't expect to get served in order, or to be able to ask politely whether the upstairs section is open or even make eye contact with the bar staff without getting a barrage of sarcasm and passive aggression.

The Hercules Tavern, Holloway

This pub is now a Tommy Flynn's. As far as I could tell, it's almost exactly the same as it was 4 years ago, but I had to leave after 30 seconds as the front half stank of piss due to clientele and the back half stank of piss due to the gents toilet opening directly into the pub. Didn't spot any customers leering over the barmaids, getting weirdly involved in pub owner politics and saying things like "happy days", though, so that's one bonus.

Three Crowns, Stoke Newington

If you get here when it's not rammed, it's a nice enough pub. Big, but quite cosy, relatively comfy and not too loud. Good Sunday roast.

Don't idly pick the extraneous wax off the candles, though, because I did that tonight and a barmaid stormed up, said "Don't destroy the candles, they're really expensive", and snatched the candle off our table. Bizarre.

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

I went here in June and thought I saw the barman sneakily fill a pint glass with the drip tray and then serve it. I decided not to mention anything, as I could have been mistaken or it could have been for some strange customer who likes that sort of thing. Today, someone I follow on Twitter went in, saw the same thing happening and tweeted about it!

I remember the thai food being very good, the bar staff being rather indifferent and sullen but not outrageously rude, and the pub itself being quite nice as long as you can get a table. But if you go here, MAKE SURE TO KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR PINT AS THE BARSTAFF POUR IT!

Open again! Might not be for long, though, as it's still got the For Sale pub agents signs up. Enjoy this amazing 10/10 dirty, rank, unfriendly dive while you can!

Sounds like super/supermum has a chip on his/her shoulder...

Yes, this pub is dirty, the barstaff aren't very talkative, the toilets are rank and the prices could be a little cheaper to offset all this. BUT the pub is also quiet and comfy, with some nice leather sofas and a great pool table. The staff are friendly if you make the effort (only Dave and Nancy left now, both very nice), and it's only 3.10 for a Stella - not too bad compared to the dive across the road that has broken the 4 barrier.

For someone like me who likes shabby old-man-pubs, this one's perfect for a couple of drinks in the week, or at the start of a night out.

Hopefully the new owners won't change it into another terrible gastro-pub...

Big Red, Holloway

An excellent pub for lazy Sundays. The burgers are delicious and great value. There's nearly always available pool tables and seats. It's comfy and unpretentious. The prices are okay. There are a couple of lovely barstaff, the rest are sulky and slow. The jukebox rock music is great, but repetitive.
It does get incredibly busy in the evenings, at which point it loses its charm.

The Richmond, Hammersmith

I really like this pub, but then I like 'old men's' pubs. The decor is mangy (although not dirty), but the barstaff are very friendly, selected drinks are very cheap (don't expect top quality, but nothing horrendous), the music is varied and interesting, the pool tables are almost always available, and it's got a few outside benches on the pavement.
The clientele is generally getting a bit younger and hipper, but you can still find it populated by staring old men. That said, I've never had any trouble, or heard so much as a raised voice.
Fully recommended as a cheap, comfy place to meet your mates.

Studio 6, South Bank

This is a good summer pub, if you manage to get an outside seat and convince someone else to go to the bar for you all night. Otherwise, you'll be disappointed by the lack of seating from 6pm onwards, and spend most of your night waiting for the unbelievably slow bar staff to get round to you. Even at a ratio of 3 customers to every barperson, it can take a good 20 minutes to get served. Also, the gents' toilets are pokey and grubby.
Finding somewhere else is recommended.
[NB I have not experienced the food.]
