The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross
The best pub around Charing Cross. A great selection of beers, and I've always found the staff to be very friendly. Can be a little smokey, but you have the option of the no-smoking pub on the other side (on the left if coming from the arches).
Be warned: you will get no mobile phone signal... could be a good or bad thing, depends on your circumstances!

The Horse and Well, Woodford Wells
Great pub - pool table, quiz machine, jukebox and big screens for the footy. Large beer garden, with a good crowd during the summer. Also do a good Castlemain XXXX on tap, hard to find anywhere else locally.

The Porterhouse, Covent Garden
Don't complain about a pub being too touristy, when it is in the middle of Covent Garden! It is a great pub, offering a huge range of beers and a friendly atmosphere throughout. The best way to do it is to go around the world in beers - everytime you get a round, get a selection of bottled beers from accross the globe. The place is much bigger than it appears from the outside, so be careful when arranging to meet friends! Also a huge thumbs-up for Sky Sports in the men's rooms!

The Princess Victoria, Kensington
Pleasant pub, just off the High Road. Small and intimate, with a couple of plasma screens showing football.
