The Pelton Arms, Greenwich

After being well entertained by Geoff and a number of the regulars in The Pelton on Saturday night I promised I'd write a review.

Primarily I found this a very friendly place and because they were running a wine and cheese night the atmosphere felt more like a party that a pub and very welcoming to an outsider like me.

There must have been 8 pumps on of which the St Austell Trelawney and Red Squirrel Red Tail were very good.

The cheese and wine night was being run by the pub's wine supplier and a local cheese expert for 15 a head. In fact there was so much left, we were invited to join in from our Cribbage table in the corner once the paying guests had scoffed their fill.

Good pub, good beer, good people.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Not just a great place to go to introduce outsiders to a bit of London's heritage but also a decent pub for lunch and a beer.

The staff were in the most part antipodeans (this is London, what do you expect) and very friendly with it.

The food was tasty and at 8 for the Steak and Kidney very reasonable. Incidentally, the Steak and Kidney is a bit of an institution here and they used to take a spoonful out of yesterday's mix and put it in today's puddings and so the same pudding was served for some 200 years. the barman assured me this has now stopped. Am I wrong in being a bit disappointed?

Blue Lion, Holborn

Dropped in here when passing on Friday afternoon. It had a nice and relaxed atmosphere, was clean and open and had a pool table. They had a good range of ales and I had a well kept pint of Butcombe Bitter

Crewe Arms, Brackley

Just a teeny bit disappointed here. The Crewe Arms has a good reputation for food and beer locally. I tried going in at lunchtime on a Saturday, and it was closed until the evening which says a lot about the decline of rural pubs.

Not to be beaten, I returned in the evening to a friendly atmosphere and a busy pub full of diners. Of the 3 pumps, 1 was Hooky and the others where Silverstone (Pit Stop and Pole Position I think). It's great news that the pub supports the locaI brewery - they're badged locALE by CAMERA, and I had the Pole Position. Nothing wrong with the beer, but not interesting enough to stay for a second.

The Greyhound Inn, Brackley

A nice pub that works very hard to be part of the local community and tries to cater for all tastes. It always seems to do a good trade in food and has a large upstairs function room. It is very welcoming of families.

In terms of beer, it's always a bit disappointing perennially serving Abbott and IPA with an occasional Greene King switch. Oh how I wish they'd have just one Guest!

The Blackfriars, Glasgow

A decent pub in a smart part of Glasgow's city centre. Only three ales (but space for 5) including a Williams Brothers Birds and Bees which was nicely kept. There looked like a reasonable range of German lagers in the fridge too.

The shame was that on a beautiful summer evening I was moved inside at 10, although I think this rule has been set by the council rather than the pub.

The Babbity Bowster, Glasgow

I walked in to the Babbity Bowser based on it's good reviews here. The atmosphere was good and reminiscent of a high ceilinged and airy continental bar. Then I got to the bar and saw a couple of local brews....on keg, with not a hand pump in sight. I turned round and walked straight back to Blackfriars.

The Prince of Wales, Moseley

A bit of a surprise really. As I worked my way past the eclectic mix of locals on my way to the bar, more and more pumps appeared until I had 9 to choose from. Had an Ubu Wild Goose and something by Titanic which were both very nice. My small critisism is that they were all a bit samey. Nothing with any real strength and no stout or mild come to think of it. Still worth going out of your way for.

The Maltings, York

I've just had an overnight stay and found the Malthings via BITE and it is one of the friendliest, most hospitable pubs I've been to...ever. I went in to read a book and have a few pints and the book remained unread as I first talked at length to the owners who were on their night off. The beer was excellent - even the Chocolate Orange Stout which was rich and bitter/burnt like a good stout should be that I tried with some trepidation, but somehow this was secondary to the atmosphere.

So to Sean who looks at this site but doesn't care for ratings and Maxine who didn't know about it congratulations on an excellent pub and thank you for a wonderful evening. As I write this you are #11 in the listing.

The Fox, Brackley

If you value a decent pint, give this puba wide berth. Only Green King IPA on and it was so bad I could have pickled eggs in it

The Ben Johnson, Weston on the Green

Nice place for dinner. Worth a visit

Mitre, Buckingham

This pub is well worth seeking out. A nice atmosphere with friendly and welcoming locals and good beer. Tribute and Abbot weren't exciting but they were well kept and once the Tribute was gone it was replaced by Everard's Tiger. There looked like a good selection of upcoming beers (many local including Silverstone and Cherwell Valley).

There seems to be an extensive renovation project with the latest addition being an outside TV to go with the bar and sofa. A nice touch for those who still like a fag with our beer and don't want to miss any of the rugby.

The Crown, Egham

I'm afraid I'm going off The Crown. The SA landlord is a really nice bloke, but the standard of beers is rapidly going downhill and the clientele are going the same way.

The Hartington, Brighton

Enjoyed a Sunday afternoon at The Hartington a few weeks ago. It has a nice, slightly bohemian/arty atmosphere and excellent Sussex on tap.

Food looked and tasted excellent, the only downside being that by the time we got to eat at about 15:00, 4 of the 6 lunch options were finished.

The Bell Inn, Shepperton

I've tried to review this pub several times, but always felt I would fail to do it justice.

This is a great local pub with a nice crowd, tucked out of the way but only 5 minutes walk from the High St. I'd lived in Shepperton all my life and didn't go there until I was 28. That's 10 years wasted as far as I'm concerned.

Mike the landlord is a great sort who keeps his beer so well that even the Courage Best tastes good. I can also vouch for the food, much of which is sourced from the local butcher.

They also have a boule court in the garden out at the back with boules available to borrow for those who fancy an outdoor alternative to the darts (or an afternoon of Francophillia).

Pete's right about wanting to keep it a secret, but then it's only fair to share this little gem.

The Sun Inn, Englefield Green

Nice local type pub hidden away in the back lanes of Englefield Green.

Also suffered from a sour pint of TEA but made the most of trainman's advice and got it changed straight away. The new barrel made all the difference.

The Swan Hotel, Staines

Good pub in a great location. Equally pleasant inside on a cold winters evening with a log fire as outside by the river in the summer. They have Pride, ESB and Discovery on all the time and rotate the 4th pump in line with Fuller's seasonal selection. At the moment it's Fuller's Old Winter Ale which is a very nice drop.

The only downside is a slightly grumpy scottish landlord.

The Royal Oak, Maidenhead

Lovely pint of London Pride and a good looking menu providing both bistro style and more traditional soup salad and sandwich.

Lots of references to Parky and his friends adorn the walls
