The Rising Sun, Blackfriars

A very good pub, with very good staff, with a very bad beer selection. If it's trendy they sell it, if it's popular they don't, which means you tend to run out of enthusiasm after 1 or 2 pints.

The Cockpit, Blackfriars

Old school backstreet pub with great service and a cracking pint of Guinness. Beer selection straight out of a 90s booze cruise to Calais so YMMV.

The Florence, Herne Hill

A combination of creche and office space during the week. If you like to drink poorly kept beer whilst surrounded by crying babies and people talking about spreadsheet synergies then this is the place for you.

Talbot, Nantwich

Great service. Serves excellent normal food, as opposed to the gastro esc stuff in most other places. Shows sport. If I lived in Nantwich this would be my local for its sheer reliability.

The Wickstead Arms, Nantwich

Railway Hotel, Nantwich

As a pub it doesn't offer much in way of choice but that is offset by remarkably friendly and warm service. As a hotel it's an old building but very clean and ideal if you like to start the day with an awesome breakfast.

The Boot, St Pancras

Primarily a back street locals pub but it does pull in a few passers by after work. I've found a friendly atmosphere on my few visits here and reasonable prices. This place is my first choice for when I'm in the area.

The Commercial, Herne Hill

Recently refurbished, brighter and more colourful than before with new tables and chairs. The service on my most recent visit was quick and polite. It's pricey, but in line with the immediate area. Small beer garden / smoking area out the back and in general it's a pleasant and comfortable place to have a beer on your way home or while your wait for your most likely delayed train. Gets rather busy as the night moves on though.

Unfortunately there obviously wasn't any money in the refurbishment budget to sort out the Gents toilets which have absolutely reeked on all of my visits pre and post the refurbishment.. Points off for this.

McGlynns, Kings Cross

The first thing that stood out to me upon entering this pub was just how remarkably clean it was. It had the layout and furniture of and old school boozer, but none of the grubiness. The service was so good that I can't think of a way it could be improved upon and this is probably what drives the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The only fault that I found with the pub was that the Guinness Cold was a bit naff - curious for an Irish place. Given the high standards on every other aspect of the pub I'm going to assume this was a rare occurance.

I will make a point of returning to this excellent pub.

The Argyle, Farringdon

Its position makes it an ideal after work pub and as such it gets busier the later in the work week you go. Having improved significantly since it changed its name and got new management, it is overall, the best place to go in the local area.

I have to deduct points though because they are pretty much incapable of serving a full pint and short filling happens so consistently and noticeably that it is hard to believe that it isn't policy. Given that they're a bit more expensive than average, this can be infuriating.

However, don't let that put you off giving it a visit. The platters are good too.

Coach and Horses, Fleet Street

Nice pub, nice staff. Minging beer selection. We gave up trying to find a lager or ale that wasn't vomit inducing and went to another pub instead. Would happily return, but only if the beer selection was changed.

The Rising Sun, Lewisham

This is a great pub with friendly bar service and talkative regulars. I've been visiting regularly for about 2 years and never had a bad experience. Brilliantly set out for watching football as well.

The Fence, Smithfields

It's an uninspiring wine bar and dining design on the inside but with a great garden terrace out the back. The bar service is good and the place is kept very clean. Clientele is office workers with a few trendy types here and there. It's a pleasant place to drink however if there's one thing that lets this place down it's the prices. Even for Central London they are ridiculously high (4.60 for a pint of Peroni).

The Three Kings, Clerkenwell

Strange little pub with friendly bar service and clientele. Will visit again.

The Blythe Hill Tavern, Forest Hill

Can't find a fault with this place other than the football was only on one TV and made it pretty squeezed. Other pubs could learn a thing or two from this place. Will visit again, top marks.

The Rose, Bexleyheath

This is a brilliant place all round - beer, staff and locals.

The only criticism is that it can be hard to get served when its busy as people sit/stand around the whole bar.

Recommended.

Admiral Hardy, Greenwich

Student pub. And a bit below par all round really.

The Shortlands Tavern, Shortlands

I've visited this pub a few times to watch the rugby recently after not going there for years. Pleased to say it's changed into a bit of a hidden gem (even though it's right next to, and visible from the station). Good atmosphere, especially when they get the jukebox going and friendly locals and staff. The over 25s policy seems to keep the idiots out. Will be visiting again.

The Queensbury Arms, Brighton

Brilliant place. It is quite cosy inside but this just adds to the charm. Highly recommended. I will be making a point of visiting everytime I am in Brighton from now on.

King Of Diamonds, Camden

Increasingly poor management and the most devastatingly dreadful bar service in central London. Yesterday they were cash only because they ran out of till roll, week before last the toilets were closed. They regularly run out of beer, although when they are stocked they're incapable of serving a full pint; short filling being this places speciality. Prices are on the cheeky side as well. If it wasn't for its location this pub would go out of business.

DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE - IT WILL RUIN YOUR DAY.

The Pickwick, Charlton

Went here last Saturday. Good place to watch the scores come in. Welcoming staff.

12 Aug 2009 14:22

The Mitre, Greenwich

A very pleasant pub. Good beer, food and service. Can get insanely busy during the football though.

26 Jun 2009 15:39

Lord Hood, Greenwich

Its a solid boozer with a beer garden.

26 Jun 2009 15:37

The Gipsy Moth, Greenwich

A nice pub with a great beer garden. However if there were a UK wide competition for the worse bar service, this place would be right there in the medal positions. The bar staff are so unbelievably dreadful that they more than negate all the positives of the place. Avoid it during peak times.

26 Jun 2009 15:29

The East Dulwich Tavern (EDT), Dulwich

A pretentious place with pretentious staff and pretentious prices that attracts unsurprisingly, pretentious clientele.

24 Jun 2009 09:59

The Clockhouse, Clerkenwell

Great pub to chill out in and have a few beers. Exceptional service, even when busy and a very mixed crowd.

23 Jun 2009 16:46

The Old Kings Head, Borough

A great old school boozer with excellent service and sky sports. This is always our starting place for a day on the beer.

23 Jun 2009 16:42

The Patch, East Dulwich

More of a restuarant than a pub now. Wouldn't recommend it for a beer, but it's good for an evening meal.

23 Jun 2009 16:27

The Castle, East Dulwich

It serves beer and shows football. How many pubs do that in Dulwich anymore? Also has some of the best bar service I've ever witnessed - minimal waiting and they always remember your drink. Regulars are friendly. A bit run down but it is currently being refurbished.
