Blimey !
Calm down Foghorn Calm down !
Theinvestigator and I were having a perfectly reasonable exchange of views there and you seem to have lost the plot.
Sounds like you need a pint ?

Dear theinvestigator
Standard deviation is designed to eliminate error or distortion which to use an analogy is like an year end audit which is designed to pick up errors or material mis staments but not fraud.
If there is a deliberate attempt at fraud by giving simply lower than average marks e.g 3's and 4's under multiple pseudonyms then yes it won't eliminate them.
Similarly an audit is not designed to detect fraud because it assumes the information provided is not fraudulent.
So if there is someone trying to downgrade a pub then other measures are surely necessary similar to The Jockey Club who investigate suspicious patterns of betting or more rigorous checks on the ID of the reviewers.

Apologies to Foghorn for trying to enlighten you - perhaps you should have paid more attention to your maths teacher !
Picasso09 has touched upon in a much more lucid and admittedly less nerdy way what I was trying to but failing to expound.

Pat-in which case BITE should apply standard deviation theory to the sample population of those voting and exclude votes outside the normal expected distribution or bell curve.
For example if the 95% of votes are between 4 and 8 but 2.5% are 3 or less and 2.5% are 9 or more than you exclude the top and bottom 2.5% to stop errors or distortions in the sample population.

Re the previous reviewers gripe about the same pubs being top ranked all the time, well I think it has more to do with context and democracy than conspiracy.
Both the Harp and Royal Oak would be great pubs wherever they were situated in the country but the fact that they are in central London makes them exceptional considering their location.
If you compare them to the many poor pubs in central London it makes them stand out against their competitors.
If you transported them and sited them next to The Jolly Sailor in West Looe in Cornwall I agree they would not seem so exceptional !
Furthermore because they are sited in central London they will have more footfall than The Jolly Sailor in West Looe and more people posting positive reviews and hence they are always at the top of the rankings which is how democracy works.

The White Horse, Parsons Green
I have been using the White Horse for a number of years and there is always have a fantastic range of beers which they obviously put a great deal of care and attention into.
On top of the superb beer they have great service as the staff are very well informed, enthusiastic and polite.
I take the point that a few of the customers can be loud and a bit over the top but you will get that in many places unless you want to use a pub only open to you, your friends and family.
Rather than feeling uncomfortable mixing with such people I look upon it as the opportunity to get some entertainment from a spot of people watching.

Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon
I was also at the beer festival and can only conclude that Slerpy was either at a different one or life in general bamboozles him as
a) there was a bar in the yard and one inside but not 4 different colour zones
b) all the beers were available at 9.00pm on the Friday when I visited
c) a returnable deposit on the commerative festival glass is standard operating practise for most festivals
All in all a very enjoyable festival staged by what continues to be an excellent pub !

The Brewery Tap, Wimbledon Village
I have been an occasional user of this pub for some time and although they always have a changing rota of guest ales they have not always been that well kept compared to say the Trafalgar in South Wimbledon or the Bricklayers in Putney.
However on my last two visits I have had a couple of really well conditioned pints one of which was Harveys Best.It was nearly as good as the Harveys they serve at the Royal Oak in Borough which in the benchmark in London.
I can't recall the other pint as it was a long session but it was so good even my lager drinking companion was impressed when he had a taste !
So well done on the quality of the beer and keep up the good work !

The Hand In Hand, Wimbledon Common
How can it be said that a pub tied to Youngs has a "great" selection of ales when all they serve is Youngs ordinary, special and Wells Bombardier.
Its neither great in the sense of being very good or great in the sense of being a large number ?

I was a bit concerned when the new owners took over but the improvements they have made have not diminished the esential character of the pub.
It is still an old fashioned boozers pub and a bit harsh on the wallet if you are on a budget but if thats not what you're after then there is a McWetherspoons round the corner you can go to instead.
The loos are now a lot nicer and the range of beer and particularly the ciders have greatly increased so for that the new owners need to be commended.
The new landlord is also much more welcoming than Norman and Michael ever were !

Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon
This is a great old fashioned pub with an eclectic selection of beers.
They often have Gales HSB, Evening Star Hophead and a Sharps on tap but on my last visit they had a couple of Downtown brewery ales including an interesting Chocolate and Orange Delight.
Although this may seem a real locals pub the barman and landlord always give a friendly welcome.

Ben Crouch's Tavern, Fitzrovia
As Sussexred says there is nothing special about this pub other than the hammer horror decor.
It's a good place to meet up and then move on from if you need somewhere in central London slightly off the beaten track but its not a destination venue to spend the evening in.

Suburban, Wimbledon
God give me strength-this is not a pub-its a cocktail bar for the post work/pre club binge drinking student/teenies/twenties crowd who don't like the taste of a proper pint cos it tastes bitter !
It started life as Hartfield's wine bar about 20 years ago and became a cocktail bar and has never even been a pub.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't serve any real ale ?
