Falcon Inn, St Mawgan

Ate here recently (May 2011). The food was absolutely delicious, and reasonably priced (I particularly recommend the cheesecake!). The pub itself is a lovely old building in a very pretty village, although it is a bit out of the way. There's a reasonable sized beer garden and a selection of 3 ales IIRC. Staff were friendly with the exception of the bar lady who was a little bit frosty. . That notwithtanding, I would definitely recommend this pub, particularly if you're after food.

The Crooked Chimney, Welwyn Garden City

Pleasant enough pub, nice food, and a reasonable selection of real ales. However, it can get very busy at lunchtimes.

Last time I was there one of our meals took over an hour to turn up !! We had to cancel the order in the end. I didn't find the staff rude, exactly, but they certainly weren't bothered that we'd had to wait so long and they didn't offer us a drink or anything for the inconvenience. Fair enough, mistakes happen, and food orders can go astray, but it's how you then deal with it that matters - and this is what really lets this pub down. It's a shame they don't seem to want to make any effort to keep their customers.

P.S. - The review from "Derek Tar" looks suspiciously like it was written by a Crooked Chimney employee!?

The Kings Arms, Hitchin

Just back from a night out in this place. My friend who has a medical condition preventing him from drinking alcohol was mocked by a group of chavs. Said group of chavs turn out to be very good friends with the barstaff, so that's alright then!? Toilets were apparently last cleaned during the middle ages. Decent selection of real ales. If you don't mind being taunted by a load of baseball cap wearing chavs with links to the bouncers / bar staff, then this might be an OK pub. Alternatively, if you like a quiet pint of real ale without having to put up with a bunch of abusive knobs, you might want to look elsewhere.

The Half Moon, Hitchin

Great real ale pub - different selection of real ales on every time I go there. Camra have awarded it "best pub in Hertfordshire" for the last two years running.

Staff are friendly, the pub has a nice atmosphere and is generally a chav free zone. Tends to attract a slightly older crowd.

The only downside is It is a bit small - not a problem in the Summer when you can sit outside but can get a bit cramped in winter.

O'Neills, Welwyn Garden City

No real ale on sale, so settled for a pint of guinness on a recent visit, it was vile. Left half of it, and bought a pint of Tetleys. . this too was barely drinkable. God only knows what they do to their pints. Went to the Gents and found three chavs snorting coke off the toilet roll dispenser. To be fair, the bouncers did chuck them out but it says something about the kind of clientele you can expect.

The Sunrunner, Hitchin

The Sunrunner is fine if you're just after a drink, but if you're after food I'd give it a miss.

My girlfriend and I thought we'd give it a try for Sunday lunch, as it used to be really good for food. We turned up just before 2pm, and I ordered a roast, but they'd all sold out. Fair enough, I thought, so we both ordered baguettes. After OVER AN HOUR waiting (!!!) I had had enough and went in to cancel my order. As I did this, the barman went and found our food, but when he brought it out it wasn't actually what I'd ordered, either (they'd "ran out of cheese"?!). At no point did anyone come out and offer us an alternative, or explain why it was taking so long. It's not even as if they were all that busy either.

I don't think either of us will be going back for food. Shame really as in most other respects it's a really nice pub.
