The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn

In this pub I was served two pints of bitter today in this pub that were probably 80% full. They took my money up front and then reluctantly filled the pints to 90% full and walked off. What more can I say?

Tichenham Inn, Ickenham

I can see since I last left a comment things haven't improved.
In the same transaction I was short changed and had an argument only to find I was right and then the barman refused to top up a pint that was about 85% full. I only go to this place because its my mates local and the beer is sometimes OK.

The Bootlegger, High Wycombe

Good real ale. Despite not serving food it is a bit poncy and popular with the rugger crowd. But still a great pub.

The Hobgoblin, High Wycombe

If you like real ale this is a great pub. It almost always has hobgoblin and rev James on and another couple of great beers. It's also got a bit of character.

Tichenham Inn, Ickenham

This pub has gone down hill a bit. Went in it yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to see Old Growler on draught except what came out of the pump was a pale colour when Old Growler is a dark porter type drink. Apparently this is not the first time that kind of a mix up has happened and obviously means you could end up drinking something much stronger than you think.
After that disappointment I decided to have a pint of London Pride which was drinkable but a bit cloudy. Finally moved onto a pint of Abbots Ale which is a standard whetherspoons fayre and that was so cloudy I rejected it. I would advise anybody visiting this pub to be very cautious over their beer choice until things improve.

The White Horse, Parsons Green

Went on Saturday and the beer choice was fantastic. The pub is too full to spend any length of time in it, even though you can get served fairly easily. I suppose you can't have everything. If you like real ales its worth a trip to Parsons Green to sample this pub as you are unlikely to be disappointed.

The Golden Lion, Putney Bridge

Went here last Saturday. Good old fashioned pub, if a bit rough around the edges. The pint of Pride I had was spot on. A complete contrast to some of the pompous pubs/clientle on the other side of the river.

The Dukes Head, Putney

Beer is a bit pricey but its a nice enough place and easy to get served even though it is quite busy. Had a pint of Winter Warmer which is one of the better Youngs beers.

The Rocket , Putney

Went here last Saturday and it was pretty good for a Whetherspoons and the beer was fine. Better than most of the other pubs near Putney high street.

The Whistle and Flute, Putney

Queued up for a bit only for some regulars to turn up who were immediately served by their friend behind the bar even though it was blatantly obvious I'd been stood there for ages. There's some great fullers pubs around but this isn't one of the. The Jack Frost Ale was OK but still won't be going back here in a hurry.

The Jolly Gardners, Putney

Went here on Saturday but it didn't seem particuarly welcoming. Only beer worth drinking in here was Wandle except they'd done that annoying thing of not changing the clip when the beer had run out so you queued up in anticipation only to be disappointed. Not recommended.

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

Went here last Saturday but they only had one real ale on and it was some yellow stuff not to my taste so gave it a miss. What a disappointment!

The Coach and Horses, Rainhill

This pub used to be rubbish but enjoyed a decent pint or three of bombardiers in here. Definitely worth a try if you like real ale.

The Commercial Hotel, Rainhill

After not being back for a year I was in the commercial on 15th October. Can't comment on the real ale because all they had was tetleys cask and I'd rather not bother with that. At least it wasnt too busy and you could get a seat. I just don't get why people like this pub.

Tichenham Inn, Ickenham

Not a bad pub and has usual good range of Wetherspoons beer. The best real ale tends to run out on a Saturday evening which is a bit frustrating and there is often not enough staff on when it is busy. Food is very hit and miss. One thing of note to CAMRA members is that a blackboard above the "empties" hatch states the pub is in the "Good Beer Guide 2011" - it was in the 2010 edition but failed to make the 2011 edition due to a fall in standards.

The Manor Farm, Rainhill

Visited here on the day after boxing day and was pleasantly surprised by the beer. The place is a bit gloomy, but some people might call that "character".
The real ale on offer was Pedigree and Marston Christmas Cracker. The Pedigree was as good as Pedigree gets and the Christmas Cracker was a really nice pint. Prices were also reasonable.

The Ship Inn, Rainhill

Went here on the day after boxing day. This is a nice pub, not too busy and probably a good place to watch sport. The beer is also well kept - but there is a sting in the tail. The real ale on offer is mainly the modern yellow stuff (such as Ship to Shore) which that CAMRA lot seem to like.
On my visit they had some nice (brown) Hawkshead Christmas ale but it ran out after one pint and the three others on offer were all yellow beers.
So my tip is that if you're not fussed about the type of ale you drink then the Ship is a good place to go, but if you like drinking traditional bitter then you may be disappointed. Should also warn that the beer is also a bit pricey for Rainhill.

The Commercial Hotel, Rainhill

Went to the comic on a Saturday night for the first time in ages. I used to live in Rainhill so remember how it used to be years ago. It was very busy (as it always has been) but the crowd huddled round the bar were frankly rude and generally refused to get out of your way if you had the audacity to want to buy a drink. Unlike the old days when the comm always served nice beer , when I eventually managed to buy a drink it was the most mediocre pint of Caines that I've ever had and the guest beer was terrible.

Maybe my expectations of what a good pub should be like have risen over the last few years but I think I'm probably being generous giving this a 2 out of 10. I wouldn't recommend that a stranger in search of a decent pint in a pleasant atmosphere should visit this pub.

The Eagle Tavern, Heage

Ran out of London pride so if pedigree isn't up your tree you maynot like this pub. Pub itself is good though and bar man was very friendly.

Dead Poets Inn, Holbrook

This pub is like the Turks head in st Helena. It serves a range of well served beer but most of it is of the yellow variety which seems to be taking over all real ale pubs. If you like that stuff then the pub is just the ticket. If you like proper bitter/porter/stout you maybe dissapointef.

The Old Silk Mill, Derby

Nice beer and nice atmosphere. Only a seven rating because my friends had a pointless tiff with the bar staff. My favourite in derby.

1 May 2010 23:02

The Brewery Tap, Derby

Excellent beer. Nice pub with good atmosphere. Fabulous.

1 May 2010 22:29

The Smithfield, Derby

The pub is ok and there was a wide range of ale. The trouble is that all the cask beer was the light coloured rubbish that is ruining things fir real beer drinkers. I won't go back.

1 May 2010 22:14

The Alexandra Hotel, Derby

It is gods waiting room but atmosphere is actually quite convivial. Beer is good too.

1 May 2010 21:33

The Brunswick Inn, Derby

Good choice of beer. Bit lifeless so would only go for the beer.

1 May 2010 21:30

The Babington Arms, Derby

It's a spoons with a beer menu on the wall which is a great innovation. Apart from that it'd just a good town centre spoons pub.

1 May 2010 20:32

Varsity, Derby

Nice atmosphere. Serves good Pedigree. Does nice brekkie. Bit poncy, modern style pub.

1 May 2010 17:58

The Rocket, Rainhill

The Rocket is a pleasant little locals pub. Not a big choice of draught beer but worth popping into if the commercial is too busy and you can usually find somewhere to sit.
It is much better than it used to be years ago.

The Commercial Hotel, Rainhill

I first went to this pub over 20 years ago and I think its still got the same customers. Gets very busy on a Friday night, but other than that is well worth dropping in for a couple of pints.

The Dover Castle, Marylebone

One of my favourite boozers and always pop in for a pint on rare excursions into town. How can somewhere this good be in the middle of such a terrible city for pubs? Mystical forces must be at play. Even the beer is cheap.

8 Aug 2006 15:32

Duffy's, North Ealing

Great place to go for a pint. Also close to a great kebab shop on Pitshanger lane. Beer is a bit pricey for a local boozer though.

8 Aug 2006 15:25

The Myllet Arms, Greenford

Being a local, I went in the Myllet Arms recently for a pint on the way to Duffys. It's the first time I'd been in there for years and I've got to say its as bad as ever if all you want is a couple of pints in pleasant surroundings.
Probably OK place to go for some cheap grub with the kids but not much else to recommend it.
