Spent the week staying nearby so had the opportunity of visiting a few nights. Got to say I quite like the place, ale was decent enough, food was good - prices were high, I put this down to a Buckinghamshire thing. Quiz night was a good laugh, although the 'quiz master' was a bit arrogant. Staff are friendly and attentive, so overall I would say a decent pub.

Proud to have such a pub in my city. Would urge anyone to visit just to marvel at the architecture - did you know the same guy who designed the interior the Titanic designed the interior of the Phil?
Can get busy, especially of an evening as it is a popular meeting place and especially when a show is on over the road. My advice is to visit on a Saturday afternoon when you can have a good look at the surroundings whilst having a pint.
People have said the ale can be hit and miss, to be fair I have found it more hit than miss.

The Hope and Anchor, Liverpool
No real ales as its a student chain pub, however usual suspects on tap, good food for a decent price (to look after those students). Shows live football but is big enough to find a table out the way.

A bit disappointed people have been in and experienced bad ale/service, I can honestly say in the years I have been going in, I have never had an issue. This part of Liverpool has some gems within walking distance, The Dispensary, The Fly, The Phil, The Belvedere and more, for me The Roscoe is part of a very elite group of pubs.

Not a bad pub at all, some very nice ales and certainly worth a visit or two. Unfortunately the stories about 'Mad Dave' are quite true and I am fortunate enough not to have suffered from his behaviour, probably because I am bigger than him and like my beer! Seriously though, just try it for yourself, avoid him if possible and you will find a decent pub.

The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn
Excessively busy 'Spoons on the doorstep of Holborn Station. Made my third visit a week ago today. As usual extremely busy, we found a table at the back. Given the crowds we were served in moments and the food was extremely quick (and good). If you dont like crowds I would avoid.

Situated in the Commercial District so busy with nearby office workers. Usual suspects on tap, San Mig, Peroni and Kingstone cider. Food served during lunch which is actually top quality. Plenty of room to grab a table and the staff are friendly and attentive.

This pub was in danger of believing its own fame and as a result letting standards slip. I am happy to report that this has been nipped in the bud and the Ship continues to be one of the premier pubs in the city. As others state, it can get uncomfortably packed, particularly on Friday's after work. My advice is pop in on a Sunday lunchtime.
Still the Rolls Royce of pubs in Liverpool, long may it continue.

Not sure if the comment below refers to a previous landlord, as I have visited a few times over the last 12 months and found two bar staff from the Emerald Isles. Small pub, usual suspects on tap - San Miguel, Carling etc, they do a nice pint of Guinness to boot and offer a small variety of food.
Its a cosy little pub and is a good place to go when they have an open mic on or a singer.

One of my regular post work haunts, can get exceptionally busy on a Friday around 4pm onwards. Definitely the best pub in the 'Commercial District' of Liverpool - that's basically the area around Old Hall Street, Tithebarn Street.
Nice range of ales which are always well kept, food is very, very good and during warmer months they have a BBQ on Fridays in the yard at the side and offer free burgers. Staff friendly and attentive. Very nice pub indeed.

New owners (same guys who have The Cross Keys nearby), still an architectural masterpiece inside, condition of the beers is reasonable as is the range. I have read comments from people finding it difficult to get served, if you are using the lounge side its difficult to get noticed without poking your head through one of the windows - which is your best bet to get served.

The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel
Being the sad old gits that we are (a group of 30 and 40 somethings), caught the train down from Liverpool for one of our historic pub tours.
The Beggar was the first stop simply because of the Krays background. Place was deserted when we arrived with only a chap painting up a ladder, we did get served by a dour barman and ended up sitting by the open fire drinking our overpriced beers looking for the spot where Cornell got it.
Dull and hardly worth the visit, maybe they are trading on past exploits?
