The Prince Albert (Rose's), Woolwich
This pub will close on the 29 July 2007. Future uncertain as the rumours in the pub say that the winning bidders 800K cheque bounced !

Earthen Death Pig was nothing more than a dry hopped version of Nethergate IPA (DHNETHERGATEIPA).

Once again it's congratulations to Nick and his staff as last night (11/04) they were presented with the S.E. London CAMRA Pub of the Year award. Place was crowded but no problems getting served by the attentive staff. Beer was spot on and the free grub was'nt bad either. Keep it up.

I was in this pub tonight and i refuse to believe you waited 45 minutes to get served. Total rubbish. Even when this place is packed you normally never wait more than a couple of minutes.

I have to agree with the last posting. I've not been in this place since last year but my friend visited on 18/03 and he got threatened. The staff, forget them, as long as you're putting money in the till they don't care. I also think that a lot of the problems in this pub have been caused by the arrival of the DLR as they've demolished the Pullman, the pub all the local dross visited, to make way for a ticket office. Guess where they go now ?

Moved onto here after the Coventry beer festival. No problems regarding the range or quality and i found 6 beers new to me. Like the plasma display but you need to get your beer notes jotted down a.s.a.p because if the beer does go the screen is updated very quickly. Will "Currently Being Changed" become the new "Sorry Not Available" ?

Foster's !!! Get real, it's brewed in Reading. Anyway, if this Grouse and Claret is so good, what are you doing in the MP ? Try the real ale, if you think Guinness upsets your "natural rythym" you wait till you've had a few of those !!!

I have to agree with Beermann. Paid my third visit last night and once again the place was deserted, just me and the barman. Great beer and love the no smoking rule but can it survive ? I wish them luck.

I'll join Big Jim in congratulating Nick and his staff on winning the BITE award. Keep up the good work.

I can confirm that the landlord and brewer (Viv) has now left. Pub will be run by Heidi and Jerry with Big Kevin from the Lower Red Lion leasing the brewery. They will still get the Verulam beers whilst others under the 'Alehouse' name will appear for the LRL and a few other outlets.

Back here again and beer range just as good and i've no problem with the prices. Early friday so you could breathe as well. What amused me was the local NHS had supplied the coasters and all about their 'Stop Smoking' service. If this ban does come in they'll have to replace all the staff as you'd never get served because they'd all be out the back puffing away.

Visited yesterday on the way back from a disappointing trip to Birmingham. This made up for it even if it did cost a fortune in cab fares. Would give it a 10 but it's such a pain to get to. Anybody who likes their real ales or traditional pubs should give this place a visit, just find a tee-total driver.

Visited this place on Sunday night for the first time in about 18 months. Service was dire and had to chase up the barmaid (manager ?)to get my change. Top up!!! Forget it. Drank my 90% filled pint and left. May venture in again in 18 months time, assuming the wrecking ball has'nt been employed.

First ever visit for the recent beer festival. In early and got a seat at a table but mistake i made was letting two 'locals' join me. Arrival of their friends meant i was squeezed out and ended up having to stand. Not impressed. Back to the station after an hour and not what i'd planned for my sunday afternoon.
That aside the pub was OK and beer good, shame about those arseholes.

The Old China Hand, Clerkenwell
Another name change for this place and it's now called the "Old China Hand".
21 Nov 2005 21:05
Have been in here on the last two fridays and on both occasions i've been 'smoked out'. Beer great (2196 real ales when i left) but sort out the ventilation guys.

Amazing place. Up for the most recent festival and beer coming out of my ears!. Next time i'll make sure i'm booked on a later train as i did'nt want to leave.

Second visit and weather completly different to previous. It's hammering down. Welcome still as warm though and beers just as good. Have heard a rumour they're moving on but nothing confirmed by the boss.
14 Aug 2005 11:01
Another trip up from London and just as good. Beers up to 1582 when i wobbled off.
14 Aug 2005 10:57
Did return on Saturday and i can see no major changes. Two Fuller's beers and all usual guests available. Only thing i did notice was two tables had gone from the No Smoking area. I can live with that.
8 Aug 2005 14:44
Amazing building but must have gone on a bad day as it only had two real ales on. That did equal one for each of the customers though with my own member of staff as well. Not certain i'll return as it was a pain to get to from the centre and there are better pubs there.
8 Aug 2005 14:41
Another first for me and expecting to have to cut my way through the smoke judging by previous comments. Early saturday afternoon so maybe i got lucky but no problems for me. If you like your real ales this place is a must. Board said 1521 so far this year.

Another "out of towner" and another happy punter. Very impressed with decor and the beer. I'll definately go back.
8 Aug 2005 14:26
Talking to the assistant manager last night and he insists the only major change will be the regular stocking of three Fullers beers. Guests WILL be stocked and the fixtures/fittings will remain. As Mally put's it, "wait and see". Also heard the pub will change it's name to the 'Doric Arch'.

On a hot and sweaty Sunday evening this pub's garden is a gem. Three ales and all in good condition. Nice place and only a short walk from Leyton station.

In Southampton for the beer festival and found this place during afternoon break. After the other local JDW this was a relief. Looked the newer of the two and better for it. Guest ales on and beer/food OK. Toilets looked like they were regularly checked as well. Much better.

The Standing Order, Southampton
In Southampton for the beer festival and found this place during afternoon break. Eeeek. Bad vibes as i walked thru the door and all guest ales were 'Sorry Not Avalable'. Kozel saved the day but i did'nt dither. Stinky toilets used and out.

18 from London well spent. Visited for the festival and Real Ales all over the place. Landlord was chatty enough though the youngsters who were asked remove their baseball caps may disagree. Cheap food on the day and a good overall impression. BITE mentions air conditioning but if it's in there it was'nt working and at 80-85 degrees it was bloody hot inside. I'll still return though.
20 Jun 2005 14:57
First time i've been to Nuneaton and only went for the local brewpub festival. Visited here and for 1730 on a saturday afternoon it was fairly quiet. Beer was OK and at 1.49. It's also got A/C and at 80-85 degrees outside was much needed. Luvly.

A standard 'Spoons outlet with nothing to make it stand out. I was told that within 6 months of this pub opening (05/2000) it had gone to the top of the local police's "trouble pubs" list. The no smoking area offers some refuge from the oiks getting tanked up before visiting the local club/2AM pubs.
15 Jun 2005 15:58
This place has definately gone to pot over the last 6/12 months. Used to be the best 'Spoons in London but has become just another mediocre watering hole. Have heard that it's being dropped from the 2006 Good Beer Guide. A shame but not really surprised.
15 Jun 2005 12:13
First visit since the refurb and vastly improved. More space, more hand pumps and better toilets (well, the Gents are). Still to smokey though and that's one thing they should have addressed. Monday's are usually quiet so i'll wait for Friday night's madness.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton
Well folks, the carpet has GONE. Not certain if it was sold off by the inch but the tiles have been revealed. For some odd reason they have taped an old Walkers Cheese and onion box to the floor instead. Beers still as good as ever so you should be able to reach the bar even quicker now you do not get stuck to the floor.
