Just returned from having an excellent dinner here. Good food, very reasonably priced, first class wine, jovial locals pub, thoroughly recommended for all to visit to eat or drink.

It appears to have shut down again. No lights on 8pm Sat. What a great shame, it's a nice pub.

Where's the abuse? Check my ratings.
It appears that the King & Queens' rating has gone down. The reason appears to be postings are removed by BITE for whatever reason and the rating is lost also with the deleted message.
My friends and I that use the Kingey STILL think it's the best "locals" pub in Wendover.

Well done pick e tippler.................couldn't agree more.At last someone to step in and show up all this crap for what it is.
Kingey in my opinion is the only pub in Wendover were a woman can go and not be pestered by some oik trying to pull you or your female friends. A good, welcoming, proper locals pub where you ALWAYS get consistency with the food, drinks and staff.

I would like to set the record straight for those concerned, I DID NOT start this back & forth slagging off match of so called abuse. I firstly received a totally unprovoked tirade of abuse from Eamonn (tabasco boy) allegeding I was a "personal supporter of Peace Campaigner" ( I didn't even know him at the time) and then various abusive messages followed from there, so, I retaliated. It's all become totally irrelevant to what this web site is for, writing about personalities/personal attacks is not what the site is for.
I suggest everyone ceases these personal attacks and focus more on the pubs and their pros & cons. I have received personal abuse from several people, you know who you are, also in every message there are assumptions and not FACTS accusing me of affinity with the peace campaigner.

Stayed here again on our annual visit to the area. Lovely rooms, friendly helpful staff, good food too.
David & Linda have got it well sown up when it comes to professional management of an hotel.

I've just looked through ALL my postings, can't find me mentioning ANYONE by name (except Eamon after his bombardment of abuse in personal messages) he had the wrong person in the end anyway.
Whatever................still think Kingey is a good place for a meeting place for ladies to meet up in.

All the many negative comments about this place far outweigh the positive, says it all really.
Terrible shame that this is such a crap pub now.
We all hope one day it will return to its former greatness.
Avoid.

A pleasant time spent here in the early evening of Christmas Eve.Usual complimentary Christmas nibbles and goodies. Our much mentioned character (peace campaigner/stick man) sat quitely not bothering anyone at all.
Usual warm friendly atmosphere as mentioned many times before.
Beats Dead Lion in every possible way, proper friendly "locals" pub.

The Woolpack, Stoke Mandeville
Quite simply THE best pub around for miles.
Extensive menu, good food, fine wines, good choice of beers, friendly staff, great ambience, the car park is permanently full, says it all really.
Puts Red Lion Wendover in the bottom league.

We took some friends here for a meal. It was their first time to this pub and we didn't brief them or say anything about the pub to influence them or not.
They immediately commented on the warm welcome they had received. Within minutes they were chatting to some locals and struck up conversation with many other friendly people.
The meal was perfect and good value. Well presented beers and fine wine.
Recommended.

Popped in here with some friends who were visiting Wendover for the first time. We had just had an excellent meal in the King & Queen and passed by on the way home.
First impression from our friends was how cold and unwelcoming the RL was after coming from the K&Q.
Souless, completely unwelcoming, cold atmosphere. We had a quick drink and left. What a shame that this once great pub has sunk to this.

Not quite abizwemmer (or is it Eamon) but close, it's actually husband, wife and daughter. Well done though for your efforts to promote the pub with your posting, I'm sure the visitors to this site will be well informed by your posting.
And now to what this site is for..................Friday is seafood day at the King & Queen and I highly recommend a visit to try their seafood menu.
The chef is very fllexible and will cook any available seafood to your liking.

Sadly this pub has closed down again. There is a notice on the entrance door saying "Closed until further notice". Great Shame.

Went in here for a meal and a drink to see if it really had improved and to take up Martin the landlords invite.
Bearing in mind my husband and I have used this pub for forty years we felt total strangers in here despite being fairly well known in the local pub community.
The meal was fine, no complaints. according to my husband the beer was awful. I had a glass of house red, fine no problems.
I don't think we will return as there's noboby that we know anymore. They are all in the King & Queen and Swan.A locals pub......I don't think so. Shame.

It's really nice to get in from the snow & the cold to a warm welcome in this pub. Relax, chat with locals, see friends and have a good hot meal at a reasonable price. Still the best pub in Wendover, a proper "locals" pub.

Just spent a night here and reckon this is one of the best pub/hotels around East Yorkshire.
A warm sincere welcome from the landlord, lovely clean well appointed room. Very good food, served quickly and well presented and HOT!
My partner said the beer was excellent with an extensive choice and was well presented. Good choice of wines too.Very friendly staff, they seem to make you feel welcomed and go out of their way to be helpful.

Some friends and I had a Christmas Dinner in here, as to be expected it was served hot, ample portions and FRESH. Once again I can't re-iterate what a good welcoming pub this is. Friendly staff, friendly clientele, and FREE PARKING! puts the Red Lion to shame.

Pleasant pub but...............in these difficult times too expensive.
15 Dec 2008 17:43
Highly recommended pub for it's atmosphere, food and well presented beers

We have just booked our Office Party (27 people) in another pub in Wendover, reason............CAR PARKING CHARGE! Another loss of hundreds & hundreds of pounds to Marstons. Hey ho!

Cosy, warm and welcoming, good reasonably priced Sunday lunch. Rather nice to eat outside too on a warm summers day. Recommended pub.

Some lady friends of mine wanted to go and see what the Red Lion was like, new chef etc. I was VERY reluctant to go as my family and I have rejected this place for reasons already given by many. We turned up about sevenish, one of our party went into reception to enquire if we had to pay the ridiculous car parking charge. The answer was yes, we would get it back over the bar.But............as we didn't know how long we were going to be would we have to keep returning in the pouring rain/cold to feed the meter.
The unaminous decision was "who wants this hassle?" anyway, inside the bar it was cold, lacked ANY atmosphere and there were only about ten people there. Upon doing a little research The Red Lion is the ONLY pub out of 27 within a set radius that has a car park charge. Are Marstons really too arrogant and ignorant to realise in these difficult times their marketing strategy is TOTALLY off course? We ended up in the King & Queen and had a great meal and enjoyed good company. Our bill was 280.75.a loss to the Red Lion thru its pettiness over a stupid car parking charge. Marstons are really shooting themselves in the foot over this pettiness. No other pub charges, why here? The Shoulder has a big car park, they don't charge.

I forgot to mention something previously that I think is quite important.
Ladies, you can go in this pub on your own and feel absolutely safe and at ease. A very important factor nowadays don't you think?
Had a fabulous cocktail in here, and it didn't cost the earth either!

This is one of my favourite pubs and whenever I'm in the area visiting a lifelong friend we always come here for lunch.
Excellent food especially if Lobster is on the menu, reasonably priced too, good choice of well looked after beers. Its good to sit outside in summer and just listen to the birds and country sounds.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I decided to visit this pub as I was passing by and I use to frequent it regularly years ago. WHAT A MISTAKE. Like so many pubs that get taken over by big companies its ruined, crap beer, staff attitude.Left after a few sips, pointless complaining.

I wrote recently to Marstons via email to their "contact us" website.
My feelings were expressed as to the downfall of The Red Lion. Amongst other things I mentioned the car parking charge (I'm aware of the hairdresser) mentioned in another review but she did have the permission of the Boss. There has always been plenty of space in the car park, I've never had a problem in 30yrs to park, but Marstons have now driven people away with this pettiness. In my email I mentioned on a positive note that I liked the extension to the restaurant and that the rooms were very nice. I did however mention the appalling attitude of some of the "younger" staff. The food was inconsistant, I have eaten there three times since the refurb, not really any thing to mention.I mentioned many other things, plus & minus. Anyway the reply from Marstons came back as dont care, so what, don't like don't go. So with this attitude myself and most of Wendover go to other establishments where your custom is met with courtesy and good food service and all one would expect from a well run pub.I do hope this review passes eamonn_tabasco_boy's spelling criterea. I received an abusive message from him for being a coward and not divilging my real identity.

Popped in lunch time. I got a warm sincere welcome from the Landlord.Warm friendly atmosphere, met four people I knew, cosy and snug after a cold miserable morning.Relax and enjoy the quality food and drinks in this welcoming locals pub.

Hooray..........a good pub again! Choice of well kept beers, good menu and competetively priced food.
Good luck to the new management, I hope it becomes a success.
Recommended.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENED TO THIS PUB, IT USED TO BE SO GOOD. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY ITS GONE DOWN THE PAN.
TOOK MY DAUGHTERS FOR A DRINK, BUT WAS SO TAKEN BY THE LACK OF ANYTHING, WE LEFT WITHIN MINUTES. SHAME, THIS WAS A REALLY GOOD LIVELY PUB ONCE. UNFORTUNATELY I CANNOT RATE IT AT ALL. AS EAMONN SAYS "KEEP AWAY"

The Village Gate, Wendover
It's a great pub again, just like it used to be several years ago. Good atmosphere. Can't explain why its got back on its feet again, but it is busy.
