The Three Nuns, Loughborough

Visited for the first time in years but found the beer still to be in excellent condition. Good service, comfortable surroundings and well worth a visit.

The Old Silk Mill, Derby

Enjoyed my first visit to the Old Silk Mill. The choice and quality of the beer was excellent. Friendly service and locals made it a very pleasant visit all round.

Mr Grundys Tavern, Derby

I visited for the first time yesterday. The beer was very good but the food was disappointing. I had sausage, onions and 'creamy' mash. Perhaps there was some cream in there but the raw onions and large unmashed lumps of spud disguised it!

The Green Dragon, Hucknall

Congratulations to the Green Dragon for its inclusion in "The Good Beer Guide". OK, there's more to life than that but it is testimony to the fact that this serves the best beer in Hucknall at the moment.

The Plough Inn, Radford

Outstanding pub with some of the best beer you'll find anywhere - EPA is superb. A very friendly place and worth going a little out of your way to get there. As David's written, "Fantastic"!

The Flying Bedstead, Hucknall

A local curiousity - why does it still exist?

The Railway Inn, Mansfield

Great to see that this place has been saved from being converted into offices. They serve a good pint of Bateman's XB here and offer very reasonably priced meals. A warm, welcoming atmosphere and a really nice place to wait for your train home - trouble is, it's easy to miss it!

The Greyhound, Mansfield Woodhouse

Lovely place. Excellent beer and friendly locals. Met a couple of Germans there last year from Mansfield's twin town, Heiligenhaus. One of them had been coming to Mansfield for 20 years and thought this was the best place around. I did wonder what two Germans were doing in a pub in Woodhouse on a very wet September Saturday afternoon. They loved it and I didn't disagree!

The Cornhill Vaults, Lincoln

Really sad that this place has closed. Went there once with friends to be met by a slightly befuddled bloke who insisted on buying everyone a drink, as it was his birthday. We asked for the Sam Smith's but got suspicious-looking Guinness - it was actually Guinness, blackcurrent and Pernod! One of the lads actually drank three of them, which didn't help improve the temper of his then girlfriend! Always an adventure emerging back into the daylight after a good session! Sadly missed. I think I meant 'missed'.

The Malt Shovel, Hucknall

Had a very nice meal here recently, cooked as I'd asked and the service was really excellent. It was a shame that the hand-pull beer was off on that occasion but I've had a decent pint here in the past.

The Chequers, Hucknall

About as welcoming as the exterior is attractive (sic).

The Mallard, Worksop

Interesting that two people who by their own admission haven't been to the place for years commenting upon the Mallard! C'mon people, this a great place! I'd not been for some months myself until yesterday but was welcomed back very warmly. "It may hold three beer festivals" - it does, the next one being 28th/29th October. I'll be there! And I've always found the staff to be very helpful, always serve a full pint and take care how they keep it.

The Fox and Crown, Basford

Lovely pub, excellent beer (I'm a big fan of the 'Brush Bitter') and first class Thai food. Introduced friends from across Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire to the place and all have enjoyed their visit.

The Lincolnshire Poacher, Nottingham

I couldn't disagree more with the previous reviewer and question when their last visit was - the toilets had been completely and expensively refurbished by the time of their post. As for expensive beer, the ever-excellent 'Harvest Pale' is 2/pint. Yes, it was a lot cheaper to drink when the summers were always golden, when you could trust your local bobby on the beat and when John Noakes climbed up Nelson's Column for the first time but try finding anything else for that price in the area - and of the same quality.

An excellent pub with a very diverse and ever-entertaining and pleasant clientelle. The bar staff offish? Not in my experience.

The Exeter Arms, Derby

A really good, traditional pub with well-kept beer and good pub grub. Concerning the latter, please note that the portions are generous! Very friendly bar staff and a welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended!

The Victoria, Lincoln

Very good pub. Excellent beer and first class food. Don't know about it being "not student friendly" but, let's be honest, that's a good point in its favour! Gives you a reason to walk up that hill!

The Dolphin, Robin Hood's Bay

Now pour my beer without being asked. A place that is indeed very welcoming with very good food and spot-on beer. See you soon.

Duke Of St Albans, Top Valley

Once went with a visting darts team. They decided to lose. Nuff said.

4 Jun 2006 10:45

The Royal Oak, Hucknall

Beat its personal best with one smashed window boarded up and two near-misses - just badly cracked. A truly passable pub - keep walking on by.

4 Jun 2006 10:42

The Red Lion, Hucknall

Once saw David Attenborough filming as yet unknown to science life-forms in the gents. I think that accounts for the smell.

4 Jun 2006 10:38

The Station Hotel, Hucknall

The decor is pure 1970s but the Nottingham Ale is spot on. No quibbles about serving a proper measure and a generally warm, friendly atmosphere. A local vicar is a regular!

4 Jun 2006 10:36

The Half Moon, Hucknall

I think Brad Pitt filmed "Fight Club" in here. I could be mistaken but it might be as a result of seeing that nice CCTV footage of the machete-wielding folk spilling out of the place!

4 Jun 2006 10:34

The Green Dragon, Hucknall

Getting a decent pint in Hucknall is not easy - you're far more likely to get one at 'Bargain Booze' than in a pub! However, the Dragon does serve a very good pint. No, it isn't cheap but you have to ask yourself whether paying anything for what comes out of most other places in the town can count as good value.

4 Jun 2006 10:33

The Broomhill, Hucknall

The beer is universally cold & tasteless and much the same could be said about the food. For some bizarre reason my family insist on going there for birthdays, etc., highlighting a previously unknown masochistic streak in the genes.

4 Jun 2006 10:29

The Mallard, Worksop

howiebeat77 - you obviously haven't been there for years! It is a superb pub, serving excellent ale, holding three bear festivals each year! A true community pub, worthy of anyone's time.
