Ye Olde Windsor Castle, Bookham

Visited recently to meet up with a chap who used to work for me. Not many customers but good range of beer including Ranmore at standard Surrey prices.

Clarifications:
Comment of "the usual tedious ignorant local English snidery" = An excellent example of this sad but very rare ( in the UK) practice.

"how anyone can suffer loss of sales by not selling something in the first place escapes me" .... You replace a beer you are selling successfully with an obscure, mediocre beer that nobody will buy. Doesn't seem hard to understand.

10 year anniversary of whinging about no Moosehead in UK pubs...... things must be dull back "home" in Canada!

I was in a couple of days ago, they were so distracted by the 0.00001% loss of sales due to not selling Moosehead they completely messed up the bill for my meal! Don't order meals of different menu types - the computer says no!

Good range of real ale and premium lagers. Service occasionally slow but generally ok. Locals generally recommend it and usually seems busy. Large parking area.
Still don't understand why a UK Surrey pub would serve a mass produced second rate Canadian lager like Moosehead - still it gives the ex-pats something to whinge about (interminably) I suppose!!! It will be Watneys Red Barrel fans next.....

Had an excellent pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord. Hogs Back Brewery Tea and Spring Ale available along with Wells Bombardier...... Tea is usually fine. Pub rates better than score indicates.

The Edmund Tylney, Leatherhead

Visited several times over Christmas Holiday as meeeting place for for work , social club meals and friends/relatives. Usual good range of beer, lager and wine. Service ok and standard Wetherspoon's food. Not had any real problem in 12 years of going there........

Slick - Wrong it's not a chain. Wrong - did rate it (and was already 4.5 / 5 and was packed). Wrong not vendetta - so in terms of your relevance to this site, what has New Brunswick got to do with Bookham exactly! Use messaging not a BRITISH PUB REVIEW area.

The Green Tree, Hatfield

Visited with my parents-in-law who had the carvery which was very good value for less than 4 as quality was good.
However, the non-carvery options were dire and the service slow. We had to chase up both the starter and main course - the latter took nearly an hour to arrive. The potato skins starter was actually a baked potato with cheese, ham and uncooked mushrooms on top. The "Fish Pie" was a layer of anaemic mashed potato over fish gravy with 2 prawns and a teaspoonful of fish in it.
Only John Smiths as cask beer.

Hi Slick. Your local friend last tasted Moosehead in the Cheshire Cat, Kanata, Ontario on 14 August 2008. Of the 5 Canadian beers tried it was the worst - not bad but just fairly bland.
There are at least 6 better beers/lagers already on offer in the Windsor Castle so why waste bar space in the pub, or review space on this site, on it?

Watermill Inn, Dorking

Visited several times on the basis that the food is good and unusually good value for Surrey. Courage real ale is well kept.
I would give it extra marks for being fully non smoking so atmosphere is unpolluted. Good news for the majority who are nonsmokers!
You can't book tables but is big enough not to be a problem.
Only negative is we had Sunday lunch here in a group of 6. The meals from the normal menu were good but the Sunday Roast was poor - little meat, undercooked Yorkshire pudding, cold vegetables. Also one meal was smothered is salt, which they exchanged quickly but we suspect the first one was someone else's reject as the waiters first comment was they don't salt food in the kitchen.

The Albert Arms, Esher

The pub has had more management attention recently and sells the biggest range of real ale I have seen for a long time. Surrey Hills, Pilgrim, Crondall, Hogs Back and Fullers. Good range of wine too as the owner is a wine merchant.
Food does look quite expensive at 16 up for a main course in the restaurant area.
Friendly helpful staff and good service.

The King William IV, Mickleham

At 8.30pm on Friday we got the last parking space outside Frascati - which saved a walk back from Mickleham. It's worth taking a good torch in case you have to do the walk.
Cornish Doom Bar bitter has been introduced and was very good.

The Bull Inn, Bethersden

We stayed at a B&B just down the road from the Bull. The B&B Customer Comments was full of good reviews of the pub. It was fully booked on the Saturday evening so we ate there on the Sunday. The food was very good and also good Shepherd Neame beers available.

Ye Olde Windsor Castle, Bookham

Returned to the Windsor Castle after the last visit and found things much improved. Four real ales were back on tap and there were now sufficient staff serving to avoid delays. Pub was also busy again which is a good sign. Food prices slightly above average but several people were eating and meals looked well presented.

Pub has changed hands recently and is now awful. 4 weeks after Christmas the normal beers are still out of stock so there are only two awful Christmas novelty beers to choose from as real ale. Last time I went in there was one girl serving who was stressed and miserable as customers complained about the long queues. The pub was infested with foul mouthed 18 year old yobs with a sad line in witty banter. I sat next to a window still boarded up after the "New Year Trouble". Probably the worst pub I have been in.
If the previous visitor thinks Canadians would pimp their daughters for a pub like this then things must be desperate over there!

Good food and beer. Very friendly staff.

The Arkle Manor, Betchworth

Very nice decor and always seems busy. However, the food seems overpriced for what it is. Three of us had a risotto which seemed to have been made with the wrong rice - it was like a soggy rice pudding with meat and veg added! The other person had a pizza which looked ok but didn't make you want to have one, especially at the price.

The White House, Oxford

We booked to eat here on a Saturday night but were surprised to find there were only two other tables occupied. The beer and service were very good. No atmosphere due to it being empty. Food was overpriced and uninspiring; Moroccan Chicken that was watery and insipid, Lamb and Noodles with little meat and an excess of soy sauce.
Overall okish but wouldn't go back.

The Old Bell Tavern, Harrogate

Visited between Xmas and New Year and was impressed by the range of well kept beer, service and atmosphere.
My wife and I both had the Fish Pie which came with a good salad - but suffered from a distinct lack of fish!

The Bear, Oxshott

Four of us ate at the pub last night. Bar area was smoky so we ate in the restaurant.
Service was slow to get seated and take food order as staff were not paying attention although restaurant was almost empty.
White wine was warm. Sea Bream for 13 had a fish quantity equivalent to 1.5 fish fingers! The other food was good, well presented and hot ( staek and mushroom pie was good).
Waitress took 12.5% service automatically added off when we complained to manager - still 70 for 6 drinks and 4 main courses.
