The Oxford Arms, Camden

Well well, where to start? The rudest bar staff i've experienced for a while, asking for a drink was an inconvenience to them. Not one single smile between them, Camden has always been famous for its Gothic connections but it seems the staff here have mistaken it for misery. In fact the only time a member of staff did change their expression was when they messed up one of our food orders and when we asked if it could be corrected the reaction was to laugh in our face and say 'its too late now!' No apology was put forward and to make matters worse two other members of staff looked towards us and shook their heads being more concerned with their trendy hairstyles it seemed. And the toilet had urine all over the floor, I think this pub summed up the whole of Camden 'going downhill and stinking'.

The Camden Head, Islington

I'd just like to point out that Stonch(see below) was probably referring to one of the many comedy nights that take place in the upstairs room. They are all run seperately, but the monday night gig is great, fortnightly you can see established comics doing new material for 4, people like Richard Herring, Milton Jones, Tony Law and I even saw Lenny Henry there once!

USB (Urban Style Bar), Huddersfield

The landlord whoever it may be has finally found how to make this pub work as it used to be an old clinical pub like any other with no character. Now its plush with a classy interior and a great range of drinks from real ale, continental lagers and cocktails. There are also beanbags and even a bed!

Chicago Rock Cafe, Huddersfield

This is now called Shout and its possibly even worse! The music is S**T!

The Bell Inn, Nottingham

Excellent pub, very well kept ales, welcoming staff. A true traditional pub right in the centre I always make it a must on a visit to Nottingham.

However my last visit was almost spoilt by a minority of the clientele airing their racist views across the bar for all to hear, although this is no reflection on the pub itself these idiots should surely be able to find a much lower rated pub in Nottingham to match their low IQs.

Big Red, Holloway

much to my dismay the burgers are now back to full price!!!

Still a good un though

Big Red, Holloway

I really like this pub, theres nothing worse than being a pool player and not being able to get on the one table in your local, the Big Red has four so your always guaranteed a game, good value food too, you can get big burgers for under a fiver in the week. And yes the playboy posters are a nice touch

Tokyo, Huddersfield

Recently back in Yorkshire, went to see the old court brewhouse, its now a trendy bar called Tokyo. Though I do miss the fact that there was a time when not one piece of furniture matched. Great drinking place though, Huddersfield is changing

The Hen and Chicken, Bedminster

Quite frankly one of the worst pubs I have ever found myself in. The barstaff didnt have a clue what they were doing and the bloke who was in charge didnt look like he cared. The staff had no idea which punter was next, and people were waiting over half an hour to be served, 3 staff were on and the bar was only 2 deep. The toilets were overflowing, two intimidating doorstaff decided to politely ask everyone to drink up by shouting 'Right you've had your fun now clear off!' The only reason I was there was to watch the comedy upstairs which isnt related to the pub, it just hires the room, a great night of entertainment upstairs spoiled by the imberciles who run the place downstairs.

The Dalston Jazz Bar, Kingsland

Bizarre! Its like you're drinking in a greasy spoon with comfy leather seats. A bloke plays records very badly and keeps getting the volume wrong either blasting it at you or so you can't hear it at all. They have a range of cocktails and continental lagers and the owner actually brings your drinks to you at the table. This place has a very curious charm, if you are ever in the area check it out, open late

The Keston Lodge, Islington

I was drinking bottled beer when I visited so didnt realise the pumps werent real, if you can't get a pint here then its probably changed my opinion as it was very close to being a cool place where you can actually get a proper pint, but I suppose they have to appeal to the posers with the latest daft hairdo to stand there holding a bottle. The music was cool though and the visuals added something original, but a good boozer has to have draught, simple as that!

The St Johns Tavern, Archway

On the last two occasions I've eaten here the food has been a bit bland which is a shame as i've had good meals there before. The service has never been a problem in my experience, can get noisy in the front bar at weekends because the designers decided bare walls looks good, but makes all the sound richochet around the room leaving you feeling like your in a noisy club with no music playing! Best boozer in Archway though

The Harringay Arms, Crouch End

Great proper boozer hidden round the corner from natwest, highly recommended if you prefer conversation to shouting in dull chain pubs.

Kings Head, Crouch End

Ok its a bit poncey, but it is in Crouch End, it is pricey too but there is a good selection of continental lagers, never eaten here but have been to the comedy many times in the downstairs bar which is always great, however they don't always have the bar downstairs open but still have three staff on the bar upstairs when two will do!

The Compton Arms, Islington

Proper good old style boozer, good selection of ales, friendly staff and very handy to know about if you want to escape the media toffs of upper street. Just tell your closest friends about it.

'Round midnight Jazz & Blues Bar, Islington

Popped in to this pub to meet on a saturday night expecting it to be busy as its not too far from Upper Street but it was just busy enough, nice atmosphere, good beer, good cheer

10 Dec 2004 11:29

The Apple Tree, Clerkenwell

Try a chicken fillet burger here, they are gorgeous. Good value for money and the beer aint too bad either, I think they still have late licence on certain nights?

Varsity, Huddersfield

This place isnt that bad for a chain pub, the food is nice and they have most standard lagers and bitters, probably one of the best 'popular' pubs for a night out in town. But if you're looking for a real pub go elsewhere.

Crown Hotel, Huddersfield

This is quite a nice pub, good meeting place with it being next to the bus station and near the train station. However it must be avoided on a friday and saturday night between the hours of 7-9pm this is when all the townies arrive and bop to all the rubbish chart music before scurrying off to Visage for more bopping to chart music. Despite this time of night I would highly recommend popping in.

3 Dec 2004 10:09

Chicago Rock Cafe, Huddersfield

Horrid, soulless chain pub full of the classy clientele who go onto Johnnys nightclub afterwards.

3 Dec 2004 10:06

The Head of Steam, Huddersfield

Everything a pub should be, ever changing guest ales and full of characters, the jazz nights are superb. You don't get nutters in here like you would expect being on a train station. Full of all sorts of Railway memorobilia for any enthusiasts out there!

3 Dec 2004 10:04

The Bull, Islington

Quite liked this pub, until they refused to serve me 10 minutes before last orders as they apparently had 'already called it'. I shall be drinking elsewhere!

1 Dec 2004 13:04

The Albany, Great Portland Street

Although rather pricey this pub is quite cool, its a little known fact that many comedy events take place in the downstairs bar which are usually really good fun. I went here when it was the firkin, euggh! The Albany is much better.

The Prince Edward, Holloway

Really friendly staff, good beer, reasonably priced, great wurlitzer juke box. No fancy gastro/media/poncey atmosphere here, a proper boozer for proper boozers

24 Nov 2004 16:40

The Landseer, Holloway

Yes the food is fantastic, the cat is cool, staff are friendly but every time i've been the draught tastes nasty, this has been the only downside on what otherwise has always been a good day/night out

24 Nov 2004 16:37

The Enterprise, Holloway

Very cheap beer for the area but horrible pub, intimidating atmosphere unless you live on the estate opposite and sing appallingly on the karaoke

24 Nov 2004 16:35

Warehouse, Huddersfield

Always get dragged in here when I go back to Udders simply because its cheap to get in, because of this it can get very busy, the music is rubbish and the atmosphere is like a teenage disco. Never liked it here but I just go as its one of the only places my mates will go to. The foods alright, thats about it

24 Nov 2004 16:31

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

A friend introduced the Kings Arms to me a few months back and I instantly fell in love with the place. The street its on feels like a film set on a Sherlock Holmes movie and the character of the pub is tremendous, the beer was fine when I went the other night, highly recommended!

24 Nov 2004 16:25

The Vulcan, Huddersfield

If you ever visit Huddersfield you must experience the delights of the Vulcan. A documentary should be made about this place, the clientele is a muddle of old men, postmen, weirdoes, alcoholics and students. The beer is good, the cheapest doubles bar I have seen, happy hour all night on a wednesday, the roast dinners at weekends are brilliant, staff friendly enough especially Pam who will always give you a warm welcome. A good proper pub full of real people and you should look out for the drunken air guitar antics by the regular drunks when the seventies themed disco starts, many a fun time had. I live down south now but always pass through the vulcans doors when i'm back in town.

24 Nov 2004 16:19

The Swimmer at The Grafton Arms, Holloway

This is by far the best pub in Holloway, the range of european beers are fantastic and its set back from the main road so you won't get burberry clad stella brigades. The juke box has one of the best selections I have seen, the food is good and the staff are friendly enough, the people posting negative comments on here obviously prefer theme pubs like o'neills which not surprisingly closed down recently. The stuffed animals are a bit weird!
