The Star, Malden Rushett

Spacious pub/restaurant that was perfect for a family Christmas meal. No complaints.

The Fox And Hounds, Surbiton

In Kingston/Surbiton riverside area, this is one off the best. Generous reasonably priced Sunday roasts, and I seem to remember an open fire...rare to find a rural feeling pub in this area.

The Halfway Inn, Newbury

The thing with anonymous reviews that slate a pub and specifically recommend another pub nearby is that it's difficult not to treat them with cynicism. Could the review below (27 Sep 2006), I wonder, have been contributed by someone connected with The White Hart?
My first time visit there (family get-together over the Easter weekend) featured excellent service, good food, interesting range of beers and a lovely garden to enjoy the sunshine in. There are open log fires inside for the colder months, and an overall friendly vibe.

The Unicorn Hotel, Somerton

I pop in here for lunch when I'm in the area on business, so although I can say that the food and ambience are great, the pub is welcoming, and the huge open fire is exactly what you want in a west country pub, I cannot comment on the beer. It drives me mad not to be able to have a couple of post-lunch pints by the fire, but such is life...you want the one you can't have.

The Cross Lances, Hounslow

This pub used to really put me off because it (the carpet perhaps?) smelt a bit stale. It seems to have got better, and for the area it's in, it's a decent enough Fullers pub. I wouldn't have said it was worth a journey just to visit this pub, but if you're in the area, you could do worse.

The Fox, Twickenham

Good "old pub" feel to it, compared to some pubs on the main street through Twickenham. The telly is small and up in one corner, so it doesn't take over the whole place. Doesn't seem to get too crowded, and an interesting selection of beers.

The Rising Sun, Stockcross

Spent a very pleasant lunch and afternoon here during the post-Christmas week. I think they normally close on weekday afternoons, but they had decided to "go with the flow" and keep the bar (including the food) open all day. Wholesome "non-gastro" food, a log fire, and a good selection of local real ales. Excellent relaxed venue for catching up with friends and family over a pie and a pint.
