The Fox and Hounds, Carshalton

This pub is awful - sticky tables and bar, threadbare chairs and stools, TVs everywhere, exceptionally loud music, no real ale because it had run out (twice in a week), difficulty getting in past the smokers, indifferent bar staff. Now the good point - there isn't one. How a pub can get so bad and still do business is beyond me.

The King William IV, Mickleham

A fantastic gem of a pub in a quirky location. On ur first visit there one lunchtime we got talking to the licensee (Ian) and within half an hour we felt like we had known him for years. We liked it so much that we went back for dinner and that was superb, albeit pricey for a pub. We have been many times since and love the place - it is a "proper" pub but, instead of doing pub food, they do restaurant food of a high standard. Where the negative comments come from about microwaves etc goodness only knows - they have a proper chef and are very proud of their food.

Of course parking is a problem, but that isn't their fault. And, although the Running Footman is excellent, being both a proper pub and a proper restaurant, that is really expensive.

The King Willy is one of the best pubs I know in Surrey - up there with the Well House Inn in Chipstead.

The Wheatsheaf, Ewell

The best of the Ewell pubs - a traditional, proper, pub. Old fashioned, with a good load of quirky locals, attentive staff and a pub feel to it. I haven't tried the food so I can't comment, but this is definitely a pub that serves food rather than a restaurant that sells beer. There are too many pubs in Ewell in these harsh financial times - let's hope that the Wheatsheaf is one of the ones that survives.

The Well House Inn, Mugswell

This pub is, in my view, the best PROPER pub in a 10 mile radius. Muddy booted walkers, locals with their dogs and a really traditional look of a real pub. You CAN eat there and the food is generally excellent, albeit too generously portioned. The staff are welcoming and friendly and when you leave you feel you have visited a pub rather than a restaurant that sells beer. For me, I hope it can survive where many others are going to fail. For that YOU need to visit.
